White and Red Dunes of Mui Ne: a 2026 guide
A desert in the middle of a tropical coast sounds like a mapping error. But Mui Ne really does have two fields of sand dunes: white and red. The White Dunes are a slice of the Sahara 35 km from the resort, with a lotus lake at their foot. The Red Dunes sit right behind the village, five minutes away by motorbike, and cost nothing.

The dunes rank among Mui Ne's top three sights, alongside the Fairy Stream and the fishing village. In 2026 Mui Ne turned up on the trending-destinations lists of the big booking platforms — expect more visitors, so come early.

White Dunes — Vietnam's Sahara

Bàu Trắng— the White Dunes, 35 km from Mui Ne. The sand really is white, almost like snow. The dunes run for kilometres and the crests reach 70–80 metres high. At their foot lies Bàu Sen lake, dotted with lotuses (in bloom from July to October).
What to do
- Quad bike:rental is 200,000–400,000 VND (~$8–16) for 15 minutes. They tear across the dunes — adrenaline and photos
- Photography:sunrise on the White Dunes is one of Vietnam's best photo spots. Soft light, long shadows across the sand
- Walking: along the crests it feels like the Sahara, not the coast of Southeast Asia
When to go
Sunrise. Leave your hotel at 4:30, arrive by 5:15. At that hour there's no one around. By 8:00 the tourists and quad bikes roll in, and by 10:00 it's baking — the sand burns your feet and there's no shade.
Skip the White Dunes at midday: +35 °C and no cover. Sunset works too, but sunrise is better — the light is softer.

Downside:it's far from Mui Ne (35 km), and a round-trip taxi runs 400,000–600,000 VND (~$16–24). A jeep tour works out cheaper.
💬 "We arrived at sunrise — desert, not a soul. Two hours later the tourists and quad bikes flooded in. Sunrise is a must." — traveller reviews on Tripadvisor, 2025

Đồi Cát Hồng— the Red Dunes, right behind the Mui Ne fishing village, 5 km from the centre. They're smaller than the white ones, but the colour of the sand — from bright orange to deep burgundy — makes up for it.
What to do
- Sledding:local kids rent out plastic sleds for 50,000 VND (~$2). You slide down the dune — simple, but fun
- Sunset:the Red Dunes glow at sunset. Arrive by 17:00, find a high point — some of the best sunsets in Mui Ne
- Photos: the sand and sky form a gradient from red to blue
Practical bits
Entry is free. Motorbike parking is on the roadside (also free). A Grab from the centre runs 30,000–50,000 VND (~$1.20–2), 10 minutes.

Fairy Stream — the bonus between the dunes

Suối Tiên— a stream that has cut through soft red and white rock to carve a miniature canyon. The walls are orange, white and pink. The water is ankle-deep. You walk barefoot straight up the stream for 30–40 minutes.
Entry is free. The trail starts at the bridge on the main road. You leave your shoes on the bank (keep an eye on them, or carry them in a bag).
The Fairy Stream is the classic add-on to the dunes. It's usually bundled into the jeep tour along with the white and red dunes, so all three fit neatly into one day.

The jeep tour is the way to go. You're picked up from your hotel at 4:30, driven to the White Dunes for sunrise, then the Red Dunes, the Fairy Stream and the fishing village. Back by lunchtime. Per person on a shared tour it's from about $10–15; booking a private jeep for the group runs 650,000–1,000,000 VND (~$26–40). Most Mui Ne hotels, guesthouses and travel desks book it for you the day before — no advance online booking needed, though a same-day WhatsApp message helps in high season.
What to bring
- Water (at least 1 litre — the dunes get hot)
- Sunscreen and a hat
- Closed-toe shoes — the sand is scorching by day
- A camera with sand protection (sand works into gear)
Important warnings
- There's no shade on the White Dunes — without sunscreen you'll burn within an hour
- Quad bikes are loud and kick up sand — if you want quiet, walk well away from the parking area
- Check the quad bike before renting — brakes, fuel, insurance (often there is none)
FAQ
What's the difference between the White and Red Dunes in Mui Ne?
The White Dunes (Bàu Trắng) are vast, like a real desert, 35 km from Mui Ne, with a lotus lake nearby. The Red Dunes (Đồi Hồng) are compact orange-sand hills 5 km from the centre, free to enter. The white ones impress with scale, the red ones with how easy they are to reach.
When is the best time to visit the dunes — morning or evening?
White Dunes at sunrise (leave around 4:30). Soft light, no crowds, comfortable heat. Red Dunes at sunset (arrive by 17:00), when the sand glows orange. Midday is too hot at both spots.
How much does a Mui Ne dunes tour cost?
A shared jeep tour of the white and red dunes plus Fairy Stream is from about $10–15 per person, or around 650,000–1,000,000 VND for a private jeep for the group. It includes hotel pickup and driver. On your own by motorbike, rental is from 100,000 VND/day (~$4). Entry to the White Dunes is 10,000 VND (~$0.40), the Red Dunes are free.
Can you visit both dunes in one day?
Yes, it's the standard route. Sunrise at the White Dunes → breakfast → Red Dunes → Fairy Stream. It usually takes half a day (from 4:30 to about 12:00). A jeep tour covers all three stops.
Are the quad bikes on the White Dunes safe?
Only sort of. Insurance is usually not included and the brakes aren't always in top shape. Check the machine before renting and don't speed on the descents. No riding experience? Take a driver-led ride instead.
