Diving in Nha Trang 2026: prices, dive sites, centres
Nha Trang bay holds 350 coral species, over a thousand marine organisms and visibility up to 30 metres from April to August. Two dives with an instructor cost about 1,800,000 VND (~$72), a snorkelling tour to Hòn Mun starts at 450,000 VND (~$18). Complete beginners dive here without a certification, and experienced divers keep coming back for the swim-throughs of Madonna Rock and the barracuda schools.

This guide has everything you need before you get in the water: dive sites with depths and levels, English-speaking PADI centres compared, current prices in VND and dollars, the best season, and a step-by-step path from first breath underwater to a PADI certification.

Why Nha Trang is Vietnam's dive capital

Nha Trang bay, in Khánh Hòa province, is a cluster of 19 islands sheltered from the monsoon winds by a mountain ridge. Warm water year-round (25–30°C), varied seabed terrain and visibility up to 30 metres at the peak of the season, as the Vietnam Travel portal notes.
The crown jewel is the Hòn Mun reserve. In 2001 it became Vietnam's first protected marine area, set up with WWF support. Across 430 hectares live more than 350 species of hard coral, 230 reef fish species and 122 crustacean species.
For comparison: Phu Quoc is known for soft corals and turtles, Con Dao for big pelagics and untouched reefs, but both are harder to reach. Nha Trang offers balance: a rich underwater world plus solid infrastructure with dozens of dive centres, English-speaking instructors and budget prices.
Hòn Mun island sits 10–11 km from Cầu Đá pier in the south of Nha Trang — half an hour by boat and you're over the reef.
The best dive sites in Nha Trang

All the main dive spots sit around Hòn Mun and the neighbouring islands. Boats leave Cầu Đá pier early in the morning — a single run usually covers two dives on different sites.
| Dive site | Depth | Visibility | Level | What you'll see |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Madonna Rock | 6–35 m | 5–25 m | Intermediate–advanced | Swim-throughs, barracuda, lionfish, groupers |
| Moray Beach | 5–18 m | 10–20 m | Beginner–intermediate | Moray eels, scorpionfish, coral garden |
| Electric Nose | to 50 m | 10–25 m | Advanced | Pinnacle, soft corals, macro |
| Coral Bay / Hòn Một | 3–12 m | 10–20 m | Beginner | Bright reefs, try-dives |
Madonna Rock — swim-throughs and barracuda
Nha Trang's most famous dive site. Rock formations create underwater grottos and swim-throughs at 6–9 metres. Deeper, at 20–35 metres, schools of striped barracuda circle — a silver wall of hundreds of fish moving in sync. Groupers, lionfish and parrotfish hide among the boulders.
Insider tip: the early boats reach Madonna Rock first, so for the first 30 minutes you have the site to yourself. By the afternoon the island-tour crowds show up.
Moray Beach — perfect for a first dive
A gentle coral garden from 5 to 18 metres. Moray eels live at the mouth of an underwater cave — hence the name. This is where first-timers are brought: calm, shallow, plenty of fish within arm's reach. It's an official PADI training site.
Electric Nose — for advanced divers
A massive underwater pinnacle rises from 50 metres down. Vertical walls are covered in soft corals and gorgonians — a macro-photography paradise. Currents here are serious, and it's not a place to attempt without 30+ dives of experience.
Coral Bay and Hòn Một — for beginners and snorkelling
Shallow reefs at 3–12 metres. Bright, varied and with good visibility. Often included in the "3 islands" tour and used for try-dives and snorkelling.

Snorkelling in Nha Trang is one of the easiest ways to see the underwater world: no certification needed, and you don't even need to swim (a life vest is included). Mask, snorkel, the surface of the water — and below you, 100+ fish species and coral gardens.
The best spots for snorkelling
- Hòn Mun, Coral Reef zone — number one. The corals start a couple of metres below the surface, the water is clear and the fish aren't shy of people.
- Hòn Tằm — a calmer alternative, with snorkelling straight from the shore. Less variety, but no crowds.
- Coral Bay (near Hòn Một) — shallows with bright reefs. Part of the "3 islands" tour, handy for families with kids.
Snorkelling on your own or on a tour
Snorkelling off Nha Trang's city beach is pointless: the water is murky and there are no corals. For proper snorkelling you need a boat out to the islands.
- Group tour — from 450,000 VND (~$18). Boat, mask, lunch, 2–3 stops. Cheap, but crowded.
- Private boat charter — from 1,500,000 VND (~$60) for 4–6 hours. Freedom over the route, quiet, your own pace.
You can rent a mask and snorkel on the beach for 75,000–125,000 VND (~$3–5). But for serious snorkelling on the islands, it's better to bring your own.
"Snorkelled off Hòn Mun — corals right under the surface, bright fish all around. The cuttlefish stole the show, changing colour right in front of us." — guest reviews, Tripadvisor, 2025

Telegram managerDive centres in Nha Trang: how to choose

There are dozens of dive centres in Nha Trang. Prices are roughly the same; the difference is in the instructor's language, the group size and the state of the gear. Here's what to look for:
- Certification — PADI or SSI. If you plan to earn a certification, it matters that the centre is an official partner.
- Language — most established centres run dives in English, and some also in German or French. Confirm your instructor speaks fluent English before your first dive.
- Group size — the smaller, the more attention you get. Private dives cost 20–30% more, but they're worth every dollar.
- Gear — ask when the regulators and BCDs were last serviced. If they can't answer, find another centre.

When to dive: the diving season in Nha Trang

The best diving season runs from April to August. Visibility reaches 30 metres, water is 28–30°C and the sea is calm.
| Period | Water T° | Visibility | Sea conditions | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| January–March | 25–27°C | 10–20 m | Calm, cooler | Good. Fewer tourists |
| April–June | 28–30°C | 15–30 m | Flat calm, ideal | The best time. Max visibility |
| July–August | 28–30°C | 10–25 m | Calm, plankton | Great. Peak fish activity |
| September | 27–29°C | 5–15 m | Monsoon begins | Acceptable. Cancellation risk |
| October–December | 25–27°C | 5–10 m | Storms, swell | Not recommended |
April–June is for those who want a certification: clear water, gentle conditions. July–August is for underwater photographers: more plankton draws more fish, manta rays and — rarely — whale sharks.
In peak season, book 1–2 weeks ahead, especially if you want a specific instructor or a small group.
Learning to dive in Nha Trang: from beginner to certification

Getting an international dive certification in Nha Trang costs a fraction of what it does in Europe or the US. Bonus: you learn among corals and clownfish, not in a swimming pool.
Discovery Scuba Diving — try it, no strings
No certification, no experience required. Age from 10. In the morning a short briefing (30–40 minutes), then two dives with an instructor who literally holds your hand. Maximum depth is 12 metres.
One day. 1,800,000 VND (~$72). After it, you'll know whether diving is for you.
"First time scuba diving in my life — about 6 metres down, all straightforward, instructor right beside me. Underwater it's another world: reefs, colourful fish. Absolutely worth trying." — diver reviews, Tripadvisor, 2025
PADI Open Water Diver — the full course
Three to four days. Five theory sessions (you can do them online via PADI eLearning before you arrive — saving a day), five confined-water dives and four in open water. At the end: a PADI card that lets you dive anywhere in the world down to 18 metres.
Price: 8,750,000–10,000,000 VND (~$350–400). By comparison, an Open Water course in Europe or the US typically runs $450–550 — often with pool dives.
Advanced Open Water and specialties
Two to three days, five dives: night dive, deep dive (to 30 m), underwater navigation, photo/video. With the certification you dive to 30 metres. Price: 7,000,000–8,750,000 VND (~$280–350).
Age limits: PADI Junior Open Water from age 10. Bubblemaker (to 2 metres) from age 8. There's no upper limit — with a medical clearance, people dive well into their 70s.
PADI vs SSI: both systems are recognised worldwide. PADI has more centres; SSI is slightly cheaper. In Nha Trang most centres run PADI.
What you'll see underwater: Nha Trang's marine life

Nha Trang bay is one of the main coral centres of the South China Sea, with the richest biodiversity in Vietnam.
Corals. Over 350 species: hard (brain, table, staghorn), soft (alcyonarians, gorgonians) and sponges. On Moray Beach there's a dense carpet already at 5 metres. On Electric Nose, vertical walls with fan corals.
Fish — the big ones. Schools of striped barracuda at Madonna Rock, groupers up to a metre long, reef sharks (harmless), spotted rays and — rarely — hawksbill turtles.
Fish — small and bright. Clownfish in their anemones, parrotfish, surgeonfish, butterflyfish. Lionfish hover over the coral. At night the morays and cuttlefish come out.
Macro life. Seahorses, nudibranchs (the vivid sea slugs every photographer dreams of), cleaner shrimp, lobsters tucked in the crevices.
Night diving — a world of its own
If you hold an Advanced Open Water certification, try a night dive. After sunset the morays go hunting, cuttlefish glow and lobsters roam the sand. Cost: 1,500,000–2,000,000 VND (~$60–80), groups of 2–4.
Safety and medical limits
Diving in Nha Trang is one of the safest in Southeast Asia: no strong currents (except Electric Nose), no large predators. That doesn't mean you can ignore the rules.
Absolute contraindications:
- Epilepsy and CNS conditions with a risk of losing consciousness
- Severe asthma and chronic lung disease
- Serious cardiovascular disease
- Pregnancy
- Acute ear infection or sinusitis (barotrauma)
Insurance: standard travel insurance usually doesn't cover diving. You need a policy with an "adventure sports" option or dedicated dive insurance from DAN (≈ $5–10 a day). The nearest recompression chamber is at the Nha Trang naval hospital.
After a dive — don't fly for at least 18–24 hours. Plan your diving so your flight home is the next day.
What to bring diving
The dive centre supplies all the heavy kit: BCD, regulator, tank, wetsuit, fins, mask. But some things are better brought yourself:
- Your own mask — the single most useful piece of personal gear. Rental ones can leak.
- Rash guard — sun protection on the boat and jellyfish protection in the water.
- Reef-safe sunscreen — ordinary sunscreen kills coral. Look for the "reef-safe" or "mineral" label.
- Motion-sickness tablets — the boat to the islands is 30 minutes and can pitch in a swell.
- Action camera — a GoPro in its housing works to 10 metres; rental at a centre is 200,000–500,000 VND.
- Dry bag — for your phone, documents and cash on the boat.
