Nha Trang and Phu Quoc — Vietnam's two headline resorts, with completely different characters

Nha Trang and Phú Quốc are Vietnam's two headline beach destinations, and the choice comes down to a simple question: do you want a city or an island? Nha Trang is a seven-kilometre promenade, restaurants on every corner, an easy budget from about $40 a day, and everything within walking distance. Phu Quoc is the country's largest island — white sand, turquoise water, and a price tag 30–40% higher.

This guide compares them on every axis, with prices current for early 2026, so you can pick the resort that fits your style of trip.

Prices current as of 03/2026. Conversions at roughly 25,000 VND = $1.

Nha Trang and Phu Quoc at a glance

Phu Quoc beats Nha Trang on beaches — turquoise water and white sand right across the island

Phu Quoc wins on beaches, and it is the most clear-cut point in this whole comparison. The island is ringed with white-sand bays and clear water, while Nha Trang's best beaches sit out of town.

Nha Trang's city beach is convenient: step out of your hotel and you are on the sand. But the water there is not the clearest, and it gets busy at peak season. For real beauty you head out to Bai Dai or Doc Let.

Nha Trang: dry season runs February to September. The rains arrive in October and last until January. Mountains shield the city from the northern monsoon, so it sees less rain than neighbouring regions. More detail in our Nha Trang weather guide.

Phu Quoc: dry season runs November to April. Peak rain is July–September. The island sits in the Gulf of Thailand, so even in the dry season the sea stays calm — there is almost no wind.

💡
The rule is simple. Flying out in winter (November–January)? Phu Quoc, no question. Summer (June–September)? Nha Trang only. February–April are good for both — decide on the other criteria.

Hotels and stays — from hostel to five-star

Tropical resort with a pool and sun loungers lit up in the evening
Phu Quoc offers world-class resorts, while Nha Trang has a huge choice of budget stays

Nha Trang is cheaper than Phu Quoc on lodging by 30–50%. The city has an enormous range — from hostels at about $6 to five-star Marriott and Amiana properties. Phu Quoc has fewer budget options, but its resorts are world-class: JW Marriott, InterContinental, Vinpearl.

5-star / resort~$60–180/night~$84–300+/night

In Nha Trang you can find a decent sea-view room for $30–40; on Phu Quoc the same money gets you something plainer and further from the beach. That said, almost every resort on the island has its own beach, pool and spa — the level of service runs higher.

If your budget is tight, Nha Trang wins outright. If you want a bit of luxury for sensible money (by global standards), Phu Quoc delivers five-star stays at prices that would buy you a four-star in Thailand or Bali. To pick a place on the island, see our Phu Quoc hotels guide.

Food and eating out — where it's cheaper and better

Nha Trang is a paradise for budget eaters. Street food on every corner, dozens of cafes with dishes from about $2.50, seafood restaurants — all within walking distance. Phu Quoc has less choice and higher prices, but one trump card: the seafood is as fresh as it gets, caught right off the shore.

In Nha Trang, aim for the streets around Xom Moi market — the density of cafes and street stalls per square metre is off the charts. On Phu Quoc, the Dương Đông night market is a must: seafood grilled in front of you, a plate of crab from about 120,000 VND (~$4.80).

Nha Trang wins on price and variety — more on what to try in our guide to Vietnamese cuisine. Phu Quoc wins on seafood quality: shrimp, squid and crab hit the table a couple of hours after being landed.

Getting there and getting around

Vietnamese street with a motorbike, overhead wires and flags — a typical resort-town scene
In Nha Trang you can get by without transport; on Phu Quoc a scooter is essential

Both resorts have their own airports, so you can fly in via a domestic connection from Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi (or a regional international flight). Getting around, though, is a real difference: Nha Trang is a city with buses, Phu Quoc is an island where a scooter is essential.

Local transportBuses, Grab, on footGrab, scooter (no buses)
Scooter rental~$4–6/day~$4–8/day

In Nha Trang you can skip transport entirely: most sights, restaurants and the beach are within walking distance. A Grab across the whole city costs next to nothing — around $1–1.50.

On Phu Quoc you cannot avoid a scooter or taxi. Distances are big — from Duong Dong to Sao Beach in the south is 25 km, and to Starfish Beach in the north 30 km. There is almost no public transport on the island.

If it is your first trip to Vietnam, Nha Trang is simpler logistically. On Phu Quoc your freedom to roam depends directly on whether you are comfortable riding a scooter.

With kids — Nha Trang or Phu Quoc

Tropical beach with palm trees, white sand and clear turquoise water
For families with young children Nha Trang is safer; Phu Quoc suits older kids

For families with young children, Nha Trang is safer and more convenient: better medical care, pharmacies on every corner, the shallow Doc Let beach, and VinWonders with its water park. If a child falls ill, finding an English-speaking pediatrician in Nha Trang is not a problem.

Phu Quoc suits families with older kids (5–6 and up). Vinpearl Safari is arguably the best zoo in Vietnam: giraffes, zebras and elephants in semi-open enclosures. VinWonders Phu Quoc matches the Nha Trang one. Ong Lang and Khem beaches are calm, with a gentle entry into the water.

⚠️
The downside of Phu Quoc for families is weak medical infrastructure. Serious cases require evacuation to the mainland (Ho Chi Minh City). Get solid travel insurance.

Verdict: toddlers (0–4) — Nha Trang. Kids 5+ — both work, but on Phu Quoc get good insurance.

For long stays and living there

Foreigners live in both Nha Trang and Phu Quoc, but on different scales. Nha Trang is a long-established expat city with full infrastructure and plenty of English around. Phu Quoc is a growing destination — quieter and pricier.

VisaE-visa or visa on arrivalUp to 30 days visa-free (direct arrival)

Phu Quoc's visa-free entry is its trump card for long-stayers. Fly straight to the island and you get 30 days visa-free, regardless of nationality; you can then hop to Ho Chi Minh City or Bangkok and return. For Nha Trang you need a standard Vietnam e-visa (currently 90 days, available to most nationalities).

⚠️
Visa rules change and depend on your passport. Check current requirements on the official e-visa portal. Data current as of 03/2026.

For a first long stay or a slow winter, Nha Trang is easier to settle into — plenty of English, from menus to clinics to tours. Phu Quoc is for people who value quiet and are ready for a more island-paced life.

The verdict — who should go where

Nha Trang and Phu Quoc are not really rivals. They are two different formats of holiday. The choice depends on what matters most to you.

And if time allows — do both. There is no direct Nha Trang–Phu Quoc flight, but via Ho Chi Minh City the trip takes 4–5 hours (about 1 hour flying plus the layover). A week in Nha Trang plus a week on Phu Quoc is a great mix of city and island.
