Panorama of Da Lat at dawn — mountains, pine forests and mist over the Central Highlands valley
Da Lat at dawn — a hill town at 1,500 m among pine forests and mist

Da Lat is one of the Central Highlands' headline destinations, listed on the official Vietnam Travel portal. In 1893 the French bacteriologist Alexandre Yersin found this plateau and decided it would make a hill resort. The French put up villas, laid out parks and built a railway. Later the Vietnamese added pagodas of ceramic shards, clay tunnels and a glass bridge. A motorbike runs about 120,000–150,000 VND (~$5–6) a day — enough to cover most of it in a couple of days.

Prices current as of July 2026. Rate used: ~25,000 VND = $1.

Crazy House — a building with no straight angles

The roof of Crazy House in Da Lat — twisting organic forms with no straight lines above the town
Crazy House — a guesthouse-museum where walls grow like trees and the roof looks like a spiderweb

Crazy House (Hằng Nga) is a guesthouse-museum where walls grow like trees, staircases coil into spirals and there is not a straight angle in the place. Entry is 100,000 VND (~$4); children 120–140 cm pay 40,000 VND (~$1.60).

It was built by Đặng Việt Nga, daughter of a former Communist Party general secretary. She studied architecture in Moscow in the 1960s, started building in 1990 — and has never quite stopped.

Each floor has a themed room: "Kangaroo," "Tiger," "Eagle," "Ant." You climb through the building like a maze, and kids love it. From the roof the whole town spreads out below you.

📌
Come before 10am, when it's near empty. By afternoon the tour groups roll in from Nha Trang and the maze loses its charm.

You can even sleep here — rooms from 1,040,000 VND (~$42). The walls curve, the furniture "grows" out of the floor, and you drift off in the "Ant" room. Book ahead; there are few rooms.

Address: 03 Huỳnh Thúc Kháng, Ward 4. Hours: 08:30–19:00.

Da Lat's waterfalls — from Datanla to Pongour

Prenn Waterfall in Da Lat — sheets of water among tropical trees
One of five big waterfalls around Da Lat — as tall as a nine-storey building

Five major waterfalls ring Da Lat, 10 to 50 km out. You can do all of them in a day on a motorbike, but your legs won't thank you by evening. Better to split them across two days: the near ones (Datanla, Prenn) and the far ones (Pongour, Elephant).

Datanla Waterfall — the alpine coaster

The most hyped and the most fun. The falls are 20 m over three tiers, but people come for the Alpine Coaster: a rail descent through pine forest where you set your own speed. Adrenaline guaranteed.

Alpine coaster (return)80,000~$3.20
Long descent (lower tier)150,000~$6
Weekday combofrom 220,000~$8.80

Besides the coaster there's a zipline, kayaking and a cable car. It's 10 km from the centre, about twenty minutes by bike.

Pongour Waterfall — worth the long ride

Seven cascades, tens of metres wide. Far fewer people than Datanla — you can stand by the water in peace. It's 50 km from the centre, roughly an hour by bike. Entry: 20,000 VND (~$0.80).

Prenn Waterfall — walk behind the water

Prenn's trick is the path behind the falls. You edge along a narrow ledge with a wall of water in front of you. You won't get soaked, but the photos are stellar. It's 10 km from the centre; entry 30,000 VND (~$1.20).

Elephant Waterfall — no railings, no compromise

Thirty metres tall, 15 wide. There are no railings — you scramble down slick rocks. It has a wild-nature feel Datanla never manages. It's 30 km from the centre, entry just 10,000 VND (~$0.40). Closed shoes only.

💬 "The alpine coaster through the pine forest is the real thrill at Datanla. The waterfall itself is more of a bonus, but the coaster is a blast." — Tripadvisor, 2025
⚠️
After rain the trails to the Elephant and Pongour falls turn slippery. The dirt track to Pongour (the last 6 km) gets churned up in a downpour — a scooter can bog down.

Linh Phuoc Pagoda and Truc Lam Monastery

Golden bodhisattva statues against the mosaic walls of Linh Phuoc Pagoda in Da Lat
Linh Phuoc Pagoda — golden bodhisattvas against walls of millions of ceramic shards

Linh Phuoc Pagoda — a temple of broken crockery

The Linh Phước pagoda stands in the village of Trại Mát. Every inch of the walls is covered in shards of ceramic, porcelain and glass. A 49-metre dragon coils by the entrance. Inside are a 17-metre statue of the goddess Quan Thế Âm and an underground hall lined with 3D mosaics. It looks unhinged, in the best way.

Entry is free. It's 8 km from the centre.

📌
The best way there is the vintage train from Da Lat station: 108,000 VND (~$4.30) return, 30 minutes through tea plantations. The train itself is half the attraction.

Truc Lam Monastery — silence over the pines

A working Zen monastery, Trúc Lâm, on the shore of Tuyền Lâm lake. Twenty-four hectares: meditation gardens, pine forest, a golden Buddha and lotus ponds. Entry is free. After Crazy House and the waterfalls, it's like turning the volume down to zero.

The Robin Hill cable car covers 2.3 km over the pines in 10 minutes, 80,000–100,000 VND (~$3.20–4) return. Ride up on the cable car and walk down to the lake — kayaks there run from 100,000 VND.

Valley of Love and the Ngan Thong glass bridge

Valley of Love in Da Lat — a park with a lake, pine forest and mountains on the horizon
The Valley of Love — a selfie park with a lake, pines and mountains on the horizon

The Valley of Love (Thung Lũng Tình Yêu) is a park 5 km from the centre. A lake with pedal boats, wax figures, 3D photo zones and flower arches. The whole place is built for selfies and couples. Entry: 250,000 VND (~$10); children 100–140 cm pay 125,000 VND.

The Ngan Thong glass bridge

Opened in August 2023. It runs 325 m long, 90 m above the ground. The tempered-glass floor "cracks" underfoot (a 7D effect), and part of the route sways as you cross. Even people who aren't scared of heights feel their knees go.

Glass bridge (on its own)200,000~$8
Combo: Valley + bridge600,000~$24

The Valley is the priciest sight in Da Lat and built around photo ops. If you're not into staged flower arches, the waterfalls give more for less. The bridge, though, is another matter — those thrills are real.

Historic attractions

Da Lat railway station — an art-deco yellow facade with a clock and three peaked roofs
Ga Da Lat station — 1930s French architecture among flower beds and bonsai

Bao Dai Summer Palace

The residence of Vietnam's last emperor, Bảo Đại (reigned 1926–1945). Built in 1933 in art-deco style. Twenty-five rooms with original furniture and the imperial family's belongings — you can peer into the bedroom and study.

Entry: 40,000 VND (~$1.60). Hours: 07:00–11:00, 13:30–16:00 (closed over lunch). It's 3 km from the centre.

Da Lat Railway Station

The French built Ga Đà Lạt station in 1932 — yellow walls, stained glass, a spire. The vintage train runs from here to Trại Mát, 108,000 VND (~$4.30) return. At the far end sits Linh Phuoc Pagoda, one of Vietnam's most striking temples.

Entry: 50,000 VND (~$2). Since October 2024 the price has risen tenfold — it used to be 5,000 VND. It's 1 km from the centre.

For districts, where to stay and getting around, see the Da Lat guide.

Da Lat's nature and parks

Langbiang Mountain — 2,167 m and all of Da Lat below

The highest point around, 12 km from the centre. Two ways up: a jeep for about 200,000 VND (~$8, 15 minutes) or a 2–3 hour hike. The trek is moderate. It's named for the lovers Lang and Biang, from the K'Ho people — the local Romeo and Juliet, with an even sadder ending.

Take a litre of water, a hat and a windbreaker — it's 5–7 degrees colder up top than in town.

Xuan Huong Lake — the heart of Da Lat life

An artificial lake from 1935. Around it: cafés, evening lights, boat rentals. The promenade runs about 5 km — ideal for a morning run or an evening stroll. Free.

Flower Gardens — 300 species over 7,000 sq m

Orchids, roses, hydrangeas and a couple of hundred more species. Quiet on weekdays, crowded at weekends. Peak bloom is January to March. Entry: 30,000 VND (~$1.20), right by the lake.

Clay Tunnel Village

A 1.2 km labyrinth of red-clay sculptures across 40,000 sq m. Fun, though an hour or two covers it. It's 60,000 VND (~$2.40), 13 km from the centre on the shore of Tuyen Lam. Easy to pair with the monastery.

Tuyen Lam Lake

A 320-hectare reservoir, 13 km from the centre. On its shores: Truc Lam Monastery, the Clay Tunnel Village and dozens of cafés. Kayaks from 100,000 VND. Budget at least half a day — this isn't a rush stop.

Active adventures — canyoning and alpine rides

Da Lat is Vietnam's canyoning capital. You abseil down ropes, jump into natural pools and slide over wet rock. It sounds terrifying, but the guides walk complete beginners through it.

Practical tips

Getting around. A motorbike is 120,000–150,000 VND (~$5–6) a day. The roads are hilly and winding, but the traffic is far calmer than in Ho Chi Minh City. Grab works, but there are few cars out at the far waterfalls — a bike is easier. You'll want an International Driving Permit and your passport to rent legally.

When to go. Dry season is November to March. In late January and February the Vietnamese arrive for Tet — book accommodation early. In the rainy season the waterfalls are stronger and prices drop 30–40%.

What to wear. 20–25 °C by day, 15 °C in the evening. Da Lat is the one place in Vietnam where you genuinely need a jacket at night. For the waterfalls, closed shoes only.

Money. Cash in VND is the default. Only larger hotels take cards. There are ATMs in the centre; withdraw dong before heading to the far sights, where card payment is rare.

Safety. Da Lat is one of Vietnam's calmest towns. Petty theft happens at the market. At the waterfalls, mind the slick rocks. On mountain roads, watch for morning fog and sharp bends.

Food. This isn't seafood country — it's about vegetables, strawberries, artichokes and coffee. A café meal averages 50,000–100,000 VND. Don't miss bánh tráng nướng (Da Lat's "pizza") and a cà phê sữa coffee.

FAQ — frequently asked questions

How many days do you need for Da Lat's attractions?

Two full days minimum. One day covers Crazy House, Datanla and the centre. The far waterfalls, Langbiang and the Valley of Love are a second or third day. For no rush, give it three days.

Which attractions are free?

Xuan Huong Lake, Linh Phuoc Pagoda, Truc Lam Monastery, the night market and the XQ silk workshop. The cable car up to the monastery costs money (~$3.20–4), but you can also reach it by bike for free.

How do you get there from Nha Trang?

The bus takes 4–5 hours, from 200,000 VND (~$8). Operators: Phương Trang, Thành Bưởi. A taxi is from 1,500,000 VND (~$60). Bring motion-sickness tablets — 130 km and more than 300 bends. Details are in the Da Lat guide.

Is the glass bridge worth it?

If heights don't bother you, absolutely. It runs 325 m at 90 m up, with glass that "cracks" underfoot. But the Valley + bridge combo is 600,000 VND (~$24), while all four waterfalls together cost about 90,000 VND (~$3.60). Do the maths.

When is the best time to go?

November to March is the dry season: 18–25 °C, flower gardens in bloom. Late January to February falls on Tet — book a month ahead. In the rainy season the waterfalls are stronger and prices drop 30–40%.

Can you get around on foot?

The centre, easily: the lake, market, Crazy House and station fit within 1–2 km. But the waterfalls, Linh Phuoc, the Valley of Love and Langbiang are 5–50 km out — no motorbike or taxi, no chance.

How much are the entrance tickets?

A wide range: from 10,000 VND (~$0.40) for the Elephant Waterfall to 250,000 VND (~$10) for the Valley of Love. Four sights are free. Covering all 15 over three days comes to about 1,200,000 VND (~$48).

Data current as of July 2026. Prices and conditions change — double-check before you travel.
