Da Lat, Vietnam (Đà Lạt) — the complete 2026 guide: what to see and what it costs
Da Lat is Vietnam's mountain retreat at 1,500 m, where pine forests, waterfalls and coffee farms replace the beach. It runs about 10 °C cooler than the coast — locals call it the city of eternal spring, travellers call it the French Alps of Vietnam.

The French built a hill station here in the early 20th century, and it remains one of the country's standout destinations on the official Vietnam Travel portal. Art-deco villas, a cathedral with a blue steeple, a 1930s railway station — all still standing. Around them: waterfalls, Buddhist pagodas, coffee farms and vineyards you won't find anywhere else in Vietnam.
Below is the practical stuff: how to get there, where to stay, what to see, and what it all costs in 2026.
Where Da Lat is on the map — and why it's worth the trip

The town sits in Lâm Đồng province, in Vietnam's Central Highlands. Mountain ranges cut it off from the coast, but the nearest beach resorts aren't far:
| From | Distance | Travel time |
|---|---|---|
| Nha Trang | 137 km | ~3 hours (bus) |
| Cam Ranh (airport) | ~140 km | ~3.5 hours |
| Ho Chi Minh City | 300 km | 7–8 hours (bus), 1 hour (flight) |
| Mui Ne / Phan Thiet | 160 km | ~4 hours |
Population is around 400,000. The time zone is UTC+7, same as the rest of Vietnam.
A short history
In 1887 the Swiss-French doctor Alexandre Yersin found the Langbiang plateau at 1,500 m: cool air, pine forests, not a single malaria mosquito. He proposed the French build a mountain sanatorium here.
By the 1920s the plateau held dozens of art-deco villas. A railway to the coast opened in 1928, and the Dalat Palace hotel — still running today — welcomed its first guests.
During the war both sides quietly treated Da Lat as neutral ground. There was no bombing, so the colonial architecture survived almost untouched — which is why it feels so different from anywhere else in the country.
Five reasons to come
- The cool. Days sit at 23–27 °C, nights drop to 11–17 °C. Forget the air-con — pack a sweater instead.
- The coffee. This is high-altitude arabica country, home to weasel coffee and dozens of small roasters in town. A dream for anyone who takes their brew seriously.
- Nature and adventure. Four waterfalls within 50 km (Datanla, Pongour, Elephant, Prenn), Langbiang mountain at 2,167 m, pine forests around the lakes — plus some of the best canyoning in Southeast Asia.
- French architecture. Villas, a cathedral, a 1930s station. You won't find this look anywhere else in Vietnam.
- Calm. Almost no package-tour crowds. Da Lat is where travellers go when they've had enough of the beach.
Skip the airport queue in 5–10 min
In winter, immigration lines run 60–90 min. With Fast Track you’re met at the aircraft and taken through the priority lane. Arrange it before you fly.

💬 "We took the Futa sleeper bus up from Nha Trang. The switchbacks start about an hour in — incredible scenery, but 40 minutes of it and my stomach was gone. Tip: grab a front-row seat, look ahead not at your phone, and take a motion-sickness pill 30 minutes before boarding." — traveller review, TripAdvisor, 2025
By bus from Ho Chi Minh City
Futa Bus: ~$15–21, 7–8 hours. Take the overnight service — you sleep on the way and save a night's accommodation.
Taxi or private transfer
Travelling as a group of three or four? A private transfer beats the bus — split the fare and ride in comfort.
Things to see in Da Lat

Crazy House (Biệt thự Hằng Nga)
The building was designed by Đặng Việt Nga, daughter of Vietnam's second president, who studied architecture in Moscow. It looks like a giant fairy-tale tree: root-like staircases, branch-like corridors, rooms carved into hollow trunks. There's a working guesthouse inside, so you can even spend the night.
Come at opening, 09:00. By midday the tour groups roll in and quiet wandering is off the table.
Railway station (Ga Đà Lạt)
Built between 1932 and 1938 in art-deco style. Regular trains stopped long ago, but a 7 km tourist stretch survives: a vintage train to the village of Trại Mát. A return ticket is 135,000 VND (~$5.40), about 20 minutes each way.
Da Lat's waterfalls
| Waterfall | Distance | Entry | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Datanla | 5 km | 30,000 VND (~$1.20) | Alpine coaster, canyoning |
| Prenn | 10 km | 30,000 VND (~$1.20) | Tunnel behind the falls |

| Pongour | 50 km | 20,000 VND (~$0.80) | Prettiest, 40 m, 7 tiers |
Canyoning at Datanla takes half a day: you rappel down the rock beside the falls, cliff-jump into natural pools and zip-line over the jungle. From 800,000 VND (~$32) with a guide. It's the town's marquee adventure — book with a licensed operator, and never freelance it, as fatal accidents have happened with unlicensed guides.
Temples and pagodas
Linh Phước Pagoda — its walls are mosaicked with shards of glass bottles and porcelain. The bell weighs 8,500 kg (the heaviest in Vietnam) and a Bodhisattva statue is assembled from 650,000 dried flowers. Free entry.
Trúc Lâm Monastery sits on a hill above Tuyền Lâm lake. You reach it by cable car: 80,000 VND (~$3.20) return, 15 minutes gliding over pine forest. Gardens and silence inside.
Peaks and panoramas
Langbiang mountain (2,167 m) lies inside a UNESCO biosphere reserve. Hike up in 1.5–2 hours or ride a jeep in 15 minutes (80,000 VND / ~$3.20). The summit gives you the whole of Da Lat.
The Ngàn Thông glass bridge — 325 m of suspended, glass-floored walkway up to 90 m high. Ticket: 400,000 VND (~$16). A combo with the Valley of Love runs 600,000 VND (~$24).

Message the managerDa Lat weather month by month — when to go
The yearly average is 18–21 °C. Days hit 23–27 °C, nights fall to 11–17 °C. A sweater or light jacket is non-negotiable, even if you're flying in from the hot coast.
| Month | Day / Night | Rainy days | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | 24 / 13 °C | 2 | Ideal — cool, sunny, best for walking |
| February | 25 / 14 °C | 2 | Ideal — the Flower Festival, dry and popular |
| March | 26 / 15 °C | 5 | Ideal — great for hikes and waterfalls |
| April | 26 / 16 °C | 11 | Good — first rains, still light |
| May | 25 / 16 °C | 16 | Mixed — afternoon showers, bring a raincoat |
| June | 24 / 16 °C | 20 | Mixed — brief downpours, up to 30% off hotels |
| July | 23 / 16 °C | 22 | Rainy — but the waterfalls are at full roar |
| August | 23 / 16 °C | 23 | Rainy — peak humidity, slick trails |
| September | 23 / 16 °C | 24 | Rainy — wettest month of the year |
| October | 23 / 15 °C | 19 | Rainy — rains easing, lowest prices |
| November | 22 / 14 °C | 8 | Good — clearing up, fewer crowds |
| December | 23 / 13 °C | 5 | Ideal — dry, cool, cosy |
Dry season (November–April) is the best window. The Flower Festival lands in December–January. Rainy season (May–October) is less brutal than it sounds: the downpour usually lasts 2–3 hours after lunch, then the sun's back out. Upside — fewer tourists, discounts up to 40%, and fuller waterfalls.
What to pack:
- A light jacket or sweater — evenings and mornings genuinely get chilly
- Closed shoes if you're heading to the waterfalls
- A rain jacket in the wet season
- Sunscreen — at 1,500 m the UV is stronger than on the coast

Da Lat coffee, wine and shopping

The farms ringing Da Lat sit at 1,200–1,600 m and grow arabica — softer and more aromatic than the lowland robusta most Vietnamese coffee is made from. Many farms, like K'Ho Coffee, run tours where you can walk the rows, watch the roast and taste before you buy.
💬 "At K'Ho Coffee they walked us through an arabica farm at 1,500 m and showed the whole process, from picking to roasting. A 500 g bag of fresh-roasted beans was 120,000 VND. On the night market the same money buys chemically flavoured robusta — the difference in the cup is night and day." — traveller review, Reddit r/VietnamTravel, 2025
Da Lat wine. Da Lat is the only place in Vietnam that makes wine. A Dalat Merlot runs ~250,000 VND (~$10), table wine 65,000–120,000 VND (~$2.60–4.80). It won't challenge Bordeaux, but it's a fun souvenir.
Artichoke tea is a local signature: mild, faintly sweet, caffeine-free. From 30,000 VND (~$1.20) per 200 g.
Food in Da Lat — restaurants and markets
The night market

Come hungry: BBQ squid, rice noodles, grilled corn, avocado smoothies. A portion runs 20,000–50,000 VND (~$0.80–2). The market also stocks good-quality second-hand European brands from 50,000 VND (~$2).
Eating out in Da Lat is genuinely cheap — you can eat well on $5–7 a day.
Tours, adventure and activities

Easy Riders are a Da Lat institution: you hire a motorcycle guide who ferries you around the waterfalls, farms and villages. From ~$30 a day. Find them at cafés in the centre or ask your hotel. If you'd rather ride yourself, the licensed canyoning outfits are the safest way to get your adventure fix.
Getting around Da Lat

Living in Da Lat as a foreigner
Da Lat has a much smaller expat scene than Nha Trang or Ho Chi Minh City, but it does exist — you'll find English-speaking travellers and long-stayers in Facebook groups and at the coffee-shops that double as coworking spots. Staff at tourist spots understand basic English; away from them, it's Google Translate and a smile.
How long you can stay comes down to your passport, not the town: check the current e-visa (up to 90 days for most nationalities via evisa.gov.vn) and visa-exemption rules for your country before you plan a longer stint.
Cost of living
Da Lat's French heritage

In other Vietnamese cities the colonial buildings were rebuilt or torn down. In Da Lat they stand as they were. The French quarter — streets like Trần Hưng Đạo and Lê Lai — is lined with 1920s–40s villas, some now boutique hotels. The Dalat Palace is a 1922 hotel with marble floors and fireplaces. Domaine de Marie is a pink-walled convent on a hill overlooking town.
Budget 2–3 hours for a "French Da Lat" walk. Come early, 06:30–08:00: fog threads between the villas and the light is soft. By noon the magic's gone.
Da Lat itineraries — 2, 3 or 4 days

Da Lat in 2 days
Day 1: Crazy House, the cathedral, Xuân Hương lake, the central market, the station with its vintage train, then the night market in the evening.
Day 2: Datanla waterfall + the alpine coaster, cable car to Trúc Lâm, Tuyền Lâm lake, Bao Dai Palace. Finish at a café with a fireplace.
Da Lat in 3 days (the sweet spot)
Day 3: Langbiang mountain, Pongour and Elephant waterfalls, the XQ embroidery village. Maze Bar in the evening.
Da Lat in 4 days
Day 4: a coffee farm, the Clay Tunnel, the Valley of Love, a strawberry farm, then some shopping before you leave. Da Lat is also one of Vietnam's top spots for a honeymoon — the cool air, the fog and the villas do most of the work.
Overall budget
SIM cards and internet
Viettel, Mobifone and Vinaphone all carry 4G in town. A tourist SIM costs ~100,000 VND (~$4) and gives unlimited data for 30 days; you'll need your passport to register it. Prefer to sort it before you fly? Grab an eSIM online. Speeds run 15–30 Mbps in the centre, dropping to 3–5 in the mountains. Wi-Fi is in nearly every hotel and café.
Nightlife and bars
Don't expect a party town, but there's a quirky scene. Maze Bar is a labyrinth of dim corridors (55,000 VND / ~$2.20 with a drink, 66 Trương Công Định). 100 Roofs Café is a multi-level building of terraces and hidden rooms, cocktails from 60,000 VND (~$2.40).
Honestly, Da Lat nightlife looks more like this: a hot cocoa with marshmallows by the fireplace in one of the dozens of cafés that stay open until 22:00–23:00.
Safety and what to know
By Vietnamese standards Da Lat is a very calm town. Theft and scams are rare.
Common mistakes
- Doing it as a day trip from Nha Trang. Three hours each way leaves 4–5 hours in town. Give it two days minimum.
- Packing no warm clothes. It's 35 °C on the coast and 12 °C at night in Da Lat. If you forget, a sweater at the market is from 50,000 VND (~$2).
- Buying coffee at the market. Go to a café that roasts on site instead.
- Renting a motorbike with no experience. The switchbacks are no place to learn.
- Skipping the night market. Turn up hungry at 18:00–19:00.
Practical tips
- Carry cash. Cards are accepted only at the bigger hotels and a few cafés
- Withdraw at BIDV or Vietcombank ATMs — lower fees
- Install Grab before you arrive
- A headlamp helps on waterfall hikes
- Da Lat strawberries taste best bought straight off the farm
Da Lat vs the coast — who it's for
| Criterion | Da Lat | Nha Trang / Phu Quoc |
|---|---|---|
| Temperature | 23–27 / 11–17 °C | 28–35 °C |
| Sea | None (137 km to Nha Trang) | Yes |
| Vibe | Quiet, European | Beachy, lively |
| Prices | 20–30% lower | Tourist markup |
| Who it's for | Introverts, remote workers, coffee lovers | Beach-holiday fans |
A good plan: 5–7 days on the coast plus 2–3 in Da Lat. The contrast works both ways.

Traveller reviews of Da Lat
What people love: the cool after the sweltering coast, the coffee, the Crazy House, the night market, the calm.
What they don't: cold nights (they didn't expect it), one day being far too short, the queasy mountain pass.
💬 "We came up from Nha Trang for one day and regretted it — nowhere near enough time. Crazy House, Datanla with the coaster, Linh Phước pagoda is the bare minimum, and you still want to sit in a café by the fire and wander the night market with 30,000-VND BBQ squid. It hit 13 °C at night — we were freezing in shorts and had to buy a sweater at the market for 70,000 VND." — traveller review, TripAdvisor, 2025
Da Lat isn't for everyone. But if a café with a fireplace beats a beach bar with cocktails, this is your town.
