Ho Chi Minh City is hot, always. 31–35°C year round, 70–85% humidity, and sun that blazes even in the "cool" month of January. This is not Da Lat with its mountain freshness, nor Nha Trang with a sea breeze. Old Saigon is a nine-million-person megacity in the tropics, where the question is never "will it be hot," but "will it be wet too."

The best time to visit is December to March: dry, "only" 31–34°C, with 5–15 mm of rain a month.

Ho Chi Minh City climate — tropical heat with no days off

Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh sits in southern Vietnam, in the Mekong Delta, just 19 metres above sea level. The climate is tropical monsoon (Aw under Köppen). It is hot and humid all 365 days a year, and only one thing changes: how much it rains.

The annual average is 27–28°C. Between the hottest month (April, 35°C) and the "coolest" (December, 31°C) there are only four degrees of difference. Up in the hills of Da Lat, 1,500 metres above the sea, it is 22°C at the same time, and nights can genuinely feel cold.

Two seasons, and no surprises:

  • Dry (December to April): 5–55 mm of rain a month, 70–75% humidity, 8–9 hours of sun a day
  • Wet (May to November): 130–335 mm a month, 80–85% humidity, showers most days but usually no longer than one to two hours

The UV index is 10–12 year round, which is extreme. You can burn in 15–20 minutes without sunscreen, even on a cloudy day. The city racks up around 2,490 hours of sun a year, more than Barcelona.

Ho Chi Minh City weather month by month — the table

In the dry season (December to March) it is 31–34°C by day with 5–15 mm of rain. In the wet season (May to October) the temperature is much the same, but rainfall hits 335 mm in September. Sea temperature is given for Vũng Tàu, the nearest beach resort, 2 to 2.5 hours from the city.

Fact: Ho Chi Minh City gets about 2,490 hours of sun a year — nearly as much as Barcelona (2,524). And 80% of the rain falls across just five months (June to October).

Dry season in Ho Chi Minh City — December to March

Nguyễn Huệ walking street in the dry season — good for a full day on foot

Four best months for a visit. Almost no rain, bearable humidity (70–75%), sun every day. Just don't confuse "dry" with "cool." January is still 32°C in the afternoon.

December to January

December opens the dry season. 31–32°C by day, 22°C at night, 15–50 mm of rain. Two to seven wet days, and those are short evening drizzles, not downpours. December evenings are arguably the nicest time in the city. The heat eases to 25–26°C and a faint breeze picks up along the Bạch Đằng waterfront.

January is the most comfortable month of the year. Not because it is cool (32°C is still hot), but because humidity falls to 70% and the heat is easier to take. 15 mm of rain, 2 wet days. You can walk the Ho Chi Minh City sights from morning to evening.

Tết, the Lunar New Year, lands in late January or early February. The city empties out: locals travel home to family, and some cafes and shops close for three to five days. Flight prices jump 30 to 50%. On the flip side, the Chợ Lớn district (Chinatown) comes alive with street shows and fireworks.

February to March

February is the driest month: 5 mm of rain. One short shower for the whole month, maybe none at all. Temperature 33°C. Great for long walking routes through the city: Notre-Dame → the Central Post Office → Bến Thành → the riverfront.

March is hotter, 34°C, and humidity creeps up by month's end. Walking is comfortable in the morning, heavy after lunch. The strategy: head out at 6:30–7:00, do the main walking before 11:00, then a mall or an air-conditioned cafe, and pick it back up after 17:00.

💬 "November through March is the sweet spot for Ho Chi Minh City: days aren't brutally hot, evenings cool off, and it barely rains — the easiest window for first-timers." — traveller consensus, Tripadvisor forums, 2025

If you have to pick one month, take January or February. Minimal rain, relatively low humidity, and fair hotel prices (Tet week aside).

Shoulder months — April and November

April

The hottest month of the year. 35°C by day, sometimes 38–39°C. Humidity rises, 55 mm of rain, and thunderstorms start by late April. The asphalt bakes, and the hotel air conditioner becomes your most valued possession. At noon the streets are nearly empty; even locals hide out in cafes and offices.

April is for those used to the tropics. First trip to Vietnam? Pick another month. If you do come, spend the midday hours (12:00–15:00) indoors: museums, a spa, the cinema.

November

The rain eases but still lingers. 115 mm of rain, 12 wet days — half of September. 31°C by day, 23°C at night.

November is the budget option. Accommodation is still at low-season rates, there are fewer tourists, and the weather is already tolerable. You might catch a week of daily downpours. Or an almost dry one. For anyone passing through Ho Chi Minh City briefly (two or three days before Phu Quoc or Da Lat), November works fine. You cover the main sights in the morning, shelter from the rain in a cafe with a cà phê sữa đá after lunch, and head to Bùi Viện in the evening.

Rainy season in Ho Chi Minh City — May to October

Six months of tropical downpours. You can still travel, with a few caveats.

A typical day: sunny morning, clouds by noon, a one-to-two-hour downpour around 14:00–16:00, then clear by evening. Mornings are free for walking and tours. After the rain the city breathes, and evenings out are even nicer than in the dry season.

💬 "Don't assume the wet season means constant rain. The showers are usually short but very intense — proper tropical downpours, after which the sun comes straight back out." — traveller reports, r/VietnamTravel, 2025

May to June — the monsoon begins

May is the transition. 190 mm of rain, 15 wet days. The heat is still strong (34°C), but the first showers bring relief. The water off Vũng Tàu warms to its peak, 29°C.

By June the monsoon is in full swing. 310 mm, 19 wet days. The downpours are heavy, with thunderstorms. Days are 32°C, but at 85% humidity it feels like a full 38°C.

July to August

270–295 mm a month, 20–21 wet days. 32°C by day, 24°C at night. A touch cooler than April, but the humidity presses down.

A routine sets in: up at 6:00–7:00, a walk before lunch, a meal at a restaurant (average bill 100,000–200,000 VND / ~$4–8), then the hotel or a mall while the downpour passes, and an evening outing after 18:00.

⚠️
Mosquitoes: after the rain, water pools in puddles, gutters and construction pits, and mosquitoes breed fast. A repellent with 30% DEET and long trousers in the evening make the difference.

September to October — peak rain and flooding

September is the wettest month. 335 mm of rain, 21 wet days. Need dry weather? Skip it.

The main problem in September and October is street flooding. Peak rainfall coincides with high tides on the Sông Sài Gòn (Saigon River). Streets in the backpacker quarter (Bùi Viện, Đỗ Quang Đẩu, Nguyễn Cư Trinh) flood knee-deep. A motorbike won't get through. On foot, only in rubber sandals.

Tip: stay in District 1 or 3, away from the riverfront. The streets there are higher and flood less often. And do bring rubber sandals. By November the water recedes.

Tet (Tết Nguyên Đán), the Lunar New Year, falls in late January or early February. Some venues close, and flights and hotels cost more. Want to see the city in festive mode? Plan ahead. Want calm? Shift your trip by a couple of weeks.

Ho Chi Minh City is not a beach resort. Timing matters less here than in a place like Nha Trang or Phu Quoc. Museums, food, shopping, nightlife — all of it runs year round. Rain shifts your plans by a couple of hours, no more.

What to pack for Ho Chi Minh City

A street fruit vendor — the heat is no reason to close up shop

The real trap isn't the heat, it's the air conditioning. It's 35°C outside, you step into a mall — and it's 20°C. The AC runs on max everywhere: the metro, cafes, malls. Without a light layer you'll be freezing in 20 minutes.

Light cotton clothingWardrobe stapleWardrobe staple
A layer for the ACEssentialEssential
Rain jacket / ponchoNot neededEssential
Sunscreen SPF 50+Essential (UV 10+)Essential

You can buy it all on the spot. A poncho at Bến Thành Market runs 20,000–50,000 VND (~$0.80–2), an umbrella 50,000–100,000 VND (~$2–4). Sunscreen is pricier: 150,000–300,000 VND (~$6–12) a tube at a pharmacy.

A 1.5-litre bottle of water is 10,000–15,000 VND (~$0.40–0.60). In the heat you'll drink 2–3 litres a day, no joke. At 35°C and 85% humidity, dehydration sneaks up fast, especially if you just landed. Don't play hero with long walks in the first two or three days.

💡
Footwear: in the dry season any light trainers or sandals will do. In the rainy season, go for rubber flip-flops or quick-drying sandals. Leather shoes or white sneakers will be ruined by one walk in a downpour.

What to do in Ho Chi Minh City in the rain

Night skyline of Ho Chi Minh City with the Landmark 81 tower and the Saigon River
Landmark 81 and the city lights — Ho Chi Minh City doesn't sleep in the rainy season either

A downpour lasts one to two hours, and half the city lives under a roof — you won't be bored.

The War Remnants Museum (Bảo tàng Chứng tích Chiến tranh) and the Reunification Palace (Dinh Độc Lập) take two to three hours. Entry: 40,000 VND (~$1.60) and 65,000 VND (~$2.60).

Air-conditioned malls are a refuge from the humidity: Saigon Centre, Vincom Center, Takashimaya. Food courts, cinemas, coffee shops. Waiting out a downpour over a cà phê sữa đá is a classic.

Bến Thành Market is covered. On Nguyễn Thái Học next to the market there are awnings with pho and banh mi.

Another option is a massage, 200,000–400,000 VND (~$8–16) an hour. Or grab a taxi to the covered Chợ Bình Tây market in Chinatown (District 5), where you won't feel the rain at all.
