An evening in Hoi An in 2026: lanterns, a river show and low-key bars
Evening is the best time in Hoi An. Once the heat drops, silk lanterns come on over the Thu Bồn river, candle boats drift downstream and live music floats out of the riverside bars. Here is what to do after sunset — from a lantern-boat ride to the big Hoi An Memories show — plus an honest word on why this is not a party town.

By day Hoi An is hot and touristy. It really comes alive after dark: from around six the Old Town switches to lantern light, the riverfront fills up and the boatmen line the bank. An evening here costs almost nothing — most of the pleasures are free or close to it.
- Riverfront & An Hoi bridge (Bạch Đằng / An Hội): Lanterns over the river, candle boats — Evening | boat 150,000–300,000 VND (~$6–12)
- Night Market (Chợ đêm An Hội): Street food, lanterns, souvenirs — 17:00–22:00 | Free entry
- Hoi An Memories (Ký ức Hội An): Show with 500+ performers, ~1 hr — 600,000–1,200,000 VND (~$24–48)
- Bars & live music (Old Town): Q Bar, White Marble, The Hill Station — Cocktail from 90,000 VND (~$3.50)
- Soul Kitchen (An Bàng Beach): Beach bar, sunsets, live music — Beer from 40,000 VND (~$1.60)
- Spa & massage (Palmarosa Spa): Massage from 200,000 VND (~$8) — Open until 21:00–22:00
- VinWonders (VinWonders Nam Hội An): Theme park, water park, river safari — 09:00–21:00 | 600,000 VND (~$24)
The riverfront after dark: lanterns, boats, night market

Every evening starts the same way: a walk along the Bạch Đằng riverfront and across the An Hội footbridge to the island. Lanterns reflect in the river, and vendors sell little candle boats (10,000–20,000 VND / ~$0.40–0.80) that you float on the water and make a wish over. The best light for photos is from the bridge between 18:00 and 19:00, while the sky is still blue rather than black.
A lantern-boat ride. From the bank you can take a boat for 150,000–300,000 VND (~$6–12): 20–30 minutes on the Thu Bồn river among the lights, with a lantern to set adrift. Haggle, especially when there are plenty of boatmen around. It costs more, and looks best, on festival nights.
The An Hội night market. Just over the bridge, rows of street food, lanterns and souvenirs run 17:00–22:00. Worth trying: bánh mì (15,000–25,000 VND / ~$0.60–1), fried ice cream (20,000 VND / ~$0.80) and a handmade lantern (from 50,000 VND / ~$2). Prices are marked up for tourists, so haggle.

Message the managerThe Hoi An Memories show
If you want more than a stroll — an actual staged show — this is it. Ký ức Hội An(Hoi An Memories, the Cong 1 Show) plays outdoors on a river island a couple of kilometres from the Old Town. It tells the town's story — fisherwomen, the trading port, a Vietnamese bride — with 500+ performers, light, water and live music, for about an hour.
| Zone | Price (VND) | Price (~USD) |
|---|---|---|
| Back rows (High) | from 600,000 | from ~$24 |
| Middle rows (Medium) | ~800,000 | ~$32 |
| Front rows (VIP) | up to 1,200,000 | up to ~$48 |
Worth it? The staging is big and genuinely striking, but the narration is in Vietnamese, so watch the picture rather than follow the plot. Middle rows are usually plenty — the VIP seats don't buy you a much better view. It does not run every night and some nights are dark, so check the schedule and book online. Shows usually start around 20:00; arrive half an hour early.
Bars and live music
To be straight about it: Hoi An is not Pattaya or Bali. There are no clubs, and the town runs a noise curfew, so bars wind down earlier than in Da Nang or Nha Trang. Evenings here are mellow rather than loud. But there are still good places to end up:
- Q Bar — cocktails and moody lighting, the most design-led spot in the Old Town.
- White Marble Wine Bar — wine by the glass in an old merchant house; a quiet night.
- The Hill Station — wine, cheese and a river view from the terrace.
- Mango Rooms / Mango Mango — cocktails right on the water, one of the best sunset perches.
- Soul Kitchen at An Bàng beach — a beach bar with live music; people come for sunset and stay for the evening.
On price: a cocktail runs from 90,000 VND (~$3.50), a glass of wine from 120,000 VND (~$5), and draught bia hơi at a simple eatery is 10,000–15,000 VND (~$0.40–0.60). A couple of Old Town bars pour craft beer (7 Bridges, Heart of Darkness) at 80,000–120,000 VND (~$3–5). Live music is mostly at weekends.
Skip the airport queue in 5–10 min
In winter, immigration lines run 60–90 min. With Fast Track you’re met at the aircraft and taken through the priority lane. Arrange it before you fly.
Telegram managerBy day: water, islands and VinWonders
Evenings aside, you still have to fill the daytime. Here is a short daytime menu — the evening in Hoi An is better with a full day behind it.

Basket boats. In Cẩm Thanh village (3 km from the centre), a boatman spins you around a coconut forest in a round woven boat — hold on and expect to get wet. ~$5–10, 1–2 hours, 15 minutes by bicycle from the Old Town.
The Cham Islands. Clear-water snorkelling and beaches in a UNESCO biosphere reserve, 18 km offshore. A half-day trip, best March–August. Full details in the Cham Islands guide.
SUP, kayak, surfing. On An Bàng beach you can rent boards and kayaks for ~$10–15 an hour. In winter (November–February) An Bàng gets decent waves and surfers come over from Da Nang. More in the Hoi An beaches guide.
VinWonders Nam Hoi An. A large theme park 17 km south: a water park, a river safari and roller coasters — a full day out. An adult ticket is 600,000 VND (~$24), children cheaper, under 100 cm free; vinwonders.com and Klook run 15–20% off. A taxi or Grab from Hoi An is ~130,000 VND (~$5), 25 minutes.
Workshops

Some schools run evening sessions, so a workshop slots neatly into the night. Three kinds: cooking classes (a market trip, then cooking cao lầu, white rose and spring rolls, from ~$15; try Red Bridge or Trà Quế Garden), lantern-making from bamboo and silk (60–90 minutes, from 150,000 VND / ~$6, and you take it home), and tailoring, with a suit or dress ready in a day or two.
Spa and massage

After a day on your feet, an evening massage is the obvious move, and it is cheap here. An hour starts at 200,000 VND (~$8); a full spa with a body wrap from 500,000 VND (~$20). Most places stay open until 21:00–22:00, so you can drop in after dinner — though in high season it is worth booking ahead.
| Treatment | Price (VND) | Price (~USD) |
|---|---|---|
| Massage (1 hour) | from 200,000 | from ~$8 |
| Spa with body wrap | from 500,000 | from ~$20 |
| Foot massage (30 min) | 100,000 | ~$4 |
| Palmarosa Spa | from 250,000 | from ~$10 |
Reliable choices: Palmarosa Spa (Thai and Vietnamese massage), La Siesta Spa at the resort (premium), and the street spas in the Old Town, where a foot massage from 100,000 VND is a good break between walks.
An evening with kids
Hoi An works well for families — the town is flat, safe and slow-paced. What lands, evening and day:
- A lantern boat on the river — 20–30 minutes of magic at any age, with a candle to float.
- The night market — lanterns, fried ice cream, everything bright and close together.
- A lantern workshop — good for kids from about 7; they make one and take it home.
- VinWonders by day — the River Safari for little ones (3–8), Water World and arcades for older kids.
- Basket boats — kids from about 5 love them: shallow river, life jackets, and they will get wet.
- An Bàng beach — a gentle slope and few waves (April–August). More in the Hoi An beaches guide.
FAQ
What is there to do in Hoi An in the evening?
Walk the Bạch Đằng riverfront and the An Hội bridge once the lanterns come on, float a candle boat, browse the night market (until 22:00) and settle in at a riverside bar with live music. Every lunar month the evening falls on the lantern festival, which is the peak. For a big set-piece, there is the Hoi An Memories show on a river island.
Is the Hoi An Memories show worth it?
If you like large stage shows, yes. It is an outdoor spectacle about the history of Hoi An with 500+ performers, about an hour long. Tickets run 600,000–1,200,000 VND (~$24–48) by zone, and middle rows are usually plenty. It does not run every night and some nights are dark, so check the schedule and book ahead.
Is there nightlife in Hoi An?
There are no clubs, and a noise curfew means bars wind down earlier than in other cities. Evenings are mellow: the riverfront, live music and a cocktail by the water. For a real night out, head to Da Nang (30 km).
How much is a lantern boat ride on the river?
A lantern-boat ride on the Thu Bồn river is 150,000–300,000 VND (~$6–12) per boat for 20–30 minutes, and haggling is normal. You usually take one boat for a group of four to six, with a candle lantern to float.
What time do bars close in Hoi An?
Most Old Town bars wind down by 23:00–00:00 because of noise limits. The beach bars at An Bàng and the spots across the river run a little later. The night market closes at 22:00.
