Hue attractions: a complete 2026 guide
In 1993 the monuments of Hue became Vietnam's first UNESCO World Heritage Site. The former capital of the Nguyen empire packs 300+ landmarks onto the banks of the Perfume River: a citadel with a forbidden city, royal tombs, 16th-century pagodas and a bridge designed by Eiffel's firm. Everything sits within a 15 km radius — here's what to see, with 2026 ticket prices and routes for one to three days.

Prices current as of July 2026. Rate used: ~25,000 VND = $1.

The Imperial Citadel — Hue's main attraction

The Imperial Citadel Đại Nội is a fortress with a 10 km wall perimeter, enclosing the Imperial City and the Forbidden Purple City Tử Cấm Thành. Entry is 200,000 VND (~$8) for adults and 40,000 VND (~$1.60) for children aged 7–12. Open daily 06:30–17:30. The booth is cash only.
Emperor Gia Long began construction in 1804 and it was finished by 1833. Walls 2 m thick and 6 m high surround the ground where 13 emperors of the Nguyen dynasty ruled Vietnam until 1945.
Inside:
- The Ngọ Môn Gate — the five-arched main entrance. On the upper tier stands the pavilion where the emperor announced decrees
- The Thái Hoà Palace (Palace of Supreme Harmony) — the coronation hall with 80 lacquered columns wrapped in gold
- The Nine Dynastic Urns Cửu Đỉnh — cast in bronze, each weighing 1,900 to 2,600 kg. They symbolise nine emperors
- The Nine Holy Cannons Cửu Vị Thần Công — ceremonial, and never once fired
- The Duyệt Thị Đường Theatre — Vietnam's oldest royal theatre, still staging traditional music performances
Budget 2.5–3 hours for a full visit. Come at opening time: fewer tour groups in the morning, and less heat. Bring water and a hat — there is little shade inside.
💬 "The imperial tombs are Hue's real highlight — each has its own style, and it's worth doing at least three of them." — traveller review on Tripadvisor, 2025
Royal tombs — three you must see, and one secret

The tombs lie south of the city, along the Perfume River, 6–16 km from the centre. Each is a self-contained architectural ensemble with its own character. Most people do three: Minh Mang, Tu Duc and Khai Dinh. The fourth — Gia Long — is nearly empty of visitors.
The tombs compared
| Tomb | Style | Entry | Time | Highlight |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Minh Mang | Classical | 150,000 VND (~$6) | 1–1.5 h | Symmetrical garden complex |
| Tu Duc | Poetic | 150,000 VND (~$6) | 1–1.5 h | Lotus lake, 12 ha |
| Khai Dinh | European | 150,000 VND (~$6) | 45 min–1 h | Porcelain mosaic |
| Gia Long | Natural | Free | 1 h | Silence, no tourists |
Minh Mang Tomb — classic Vietnamese architecture
Lăng Minh Mạng sits on the bank of the Perfume River. Built in 1840–1843, it is the most "correct" of the tombs: strict symmetry, an axis running from the gate to the burial mound. You cross the Trung Đạo bridge over Trung Minh lake, pass the Sung An pavilion with its stele of merits, and reach a locked door — the mound lies beyond it. Open 07:00–17:00.
Tu Duc Tomb — a poet's garden by the lake

The largest complex, at 12 hectares. Emperor Tu Duc built it in 1864–1867 and used it as a summer residence: he wrote poems in the Xung Khiêm pavilion on the shore of Lưu Khiêm lake, thick with lotus.
This is a place to just sit on a step by the water and not rush anywhere. Open 08:00–17:00.
Khai Dinh Tomb — European flair in mosaic
Khai Dinh spent 11 years building his tomb (1920–1931). Outside — staircases, columns, concrete: more France than Vietnam. Inside, though, the ceilings and walls are inlaid with a mosaic of thousands of porcelain shards and coloured glass. The most compact of the four tombs, but unmatched for detail. Open 07:00–17:00.
Gia Long Tomb — for those who want solitude
16 km from the centre. The first emperor of the Nguyen dynasty. Almost no one around — stone statues, ponds, old structures among the trees. A scooter is the easiest way to get there.

Pagodas and temples of Hue

Thien Mu Pagoda — the symbol of the city
Chùa Thiên Mụ — the "Pagoda of the Celestial Lady." It stands on Hà Khê hill, 5 km southwest of the Citadel, on the bank of the Perfume River. Founded in 1601, it is the oldest pagoda in Hue.
The Phước Duyên tower has 7 tiers and rises 21 metres. Each tier symbolises a reincarnation of Buddha.
On the grounds sits the Austin car in which the monk Thích Quảng Đức drove to Saigon in 1963 to self-immolate in protest. Malcolm Browne's photograph of the act went around the world.
Entry is free. Allow 30–45 minutes. Easy to combine with a river cruise.
Tu Hieu Pagoda — Zen without the crowds
Chùa Từ Hiếu — 5 km from the centre. This is where the Zen master Thích Nhất Hạnh, one of the best-known Buddhist teachers of the 20th century, took his monastic vows. Quiet, almost tourist-free, with ponds and old trees. Free entry. 30 minutes to look around.
The Perfume River — a cruise through the heart of Hue

Sông Hương splits Hue in two. It runs 80 km. The name comes from flowering trees whose scent the water once carried downstream.
A one-hour dragon-boat cruise costs 100,000–250,000 VND (~$4–10) depending on the boat. Departures are from the Toà Khâm pier (49 Lê Lợi). The route runs Truong Tien Bridge → Thien Mu Pagoda → views of the Citadel.
The evening cruise with ca Huế folk music has three sessions: 19:00, 20:00, 21:00. Musicians play traditional instruments, and you can float paper lanterns on the water. If you've never done one, try it.
💬 "The boats are beautiful, the guide tells you about the history, the pagodas and Buddhism. Sunset on the river was one of the best moments in Hue." — review from 2025, Tripadvisor

Telegram managerTruong Tien Bridge and Dong Ba Market — everyday Hue

The Cầu Trường Tiền bridge was built in 1899 to a design by Gustave Eiffel's firm. Six arches, 402 metres, linking the old town to the modern one. In the evening it lights up — a different colour each day.
Two hundred metres from the bridge is Chợ Đông Ba, Hue's largest market. Open 06:00–18:00. Here people buy:
- Conical hats nón lá — from 30,000 VND (~$1.20)
- Spices and dried seafood
- Textiles and silk
In and around the market you'll find street food: bánh bèo (steamed rice cakes), bánh nậm (rice dumplings in banana leaf), chè Huế (sweet dessert soups). A portion is 5,000–15,000 VND (~$0.20–0.60).
The abandoned Ho Thuy Tien water park — a dragon over the lake

Hồ Thuỷ Tiên was a $3 million water park that opened in 2004 and closed two years later. Its centrepiece is a three-storey dragon statue rising out of the lake.
In 2024–2025 the city invested around 20 billion VND in a renovation: new paths, flower beds, lighting. The dragon has been restored. Technically it is no longer a "ruin," but the photographers keep coming.
Getting there: 7–10 km southwest of the centre. By scooter it's 15–20 minutes; a Grab is about 150,000 VND (~$6).

Message the managerBach Ma National Park — nature next to the city
Vườn Quốc gia Bạch Mã — 40 km southeast of Hue. Its summit reaches 1,450 m. The park sits on the climatic border between northern and southern Vietnam: 2,147 plant species and 1,493 animal species.
There are trekking routes of varying difficulty, waterfalls, and the ruins of 1930s French villas. Entry: 60,000 VND (~$2.40). Set aside a full day.
The best way there is a rented scooter or a transfer. It's about an hour's drive from Hue.
What to eat — the food of Hue

Hue's cuisine is a story of its own. The kitchens here make dishes you won't find in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City: recipes that started at the imperial court and settled into street-corner eateries.
| Dish | What it is | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Bún bò Huế | Spicy rice-noodle soup with beef | 30,000–50,000 VND (~$1.20–2) |
| Bánh bèo | Steamed rice cakes with dried shrimp | 5,000 VND each (~$0.20) |
| Bánh nậm | Flat rice dumplings in banana leaf | 5,000 VND each (~$0.20) |
| Cơm hến | Rice with river clams and herbs | 25,000 VND (~$1) |
| Nem lụi | Grilled pork on lemongrass skewers | 40,000 VND (~$1.60) |
Find it at Dong Ba Market, in the quarters south of the Perfume River, or in the restaurants on Phạm Ngũ Lão street.

When to visit Hue
February–April is the best window. Dry, 25–30°C, easy to walk all day without getting soaked. May–August is hot (up to 35°C) but bearable.
September through November is the rainy season. And it's not just downpours: in November 2024 Hue flooded and streets went underwater. Planning a trip for these months is a gamble.
| Period | Air temp | Rainfall | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|

Phú Bài Airport (HUI) is 15 km from the centre; a taxi into town is about 200,000 VND (~$8). Buses and trains are easiest to book on 12Go or Baolau, both in English and taking card.
From Da Nang the train is the scenic option — the line crosses the Hai Van Pass, with mountains and sea on either side. Easy to combine with the Da Nang guide and the Hoi An old town.
Getting around the city
A rented scooter is 100,000–150,000 VND/day (~$4–6) and the best option for the tombs. Grab and taxis start around 15,000 VND/km (~$0.60) — handy if you'd rather not ride yourself. You'll need a valid licence (ideally an International Driving Permit) to rent legally.
Bikes are often free at hotels (or 50,000 VND/day, ~$2). Fine for pottering around town, but for tombs 12–16 km out they're hard work, especially in the heat.
A cyclo (pedicab) is 100,000–200,000 VND/hour (~$4–8). Atmospheric, but agree the price before you get in.
