Where to stay in Ha Long: city, cruise or island

Two people can easily spend $1,000 across three nights — or come in under $250 if they know where to look. This guide covers four accommodation scenarios, eight hotels with 2026 prices, eight cruises compared, and a decision matrix for three trip types.

Cruise, city or island

There are four formats here, each solving a different problem. A cruise gives you the bay itself. A hotel in Bai Chay gives you city infrastructure and a base for day trips. A resort on Tuan Chau gives you a beach holiday next to Sun World. A guesthouse on Cat Ba gives you budget and access to Lan Ha bay. The task is not picking the "best" one, but the right combination for your route.

For a first visit the optimal pattern is one night on a cruise plus one night in Bai Chay. It is a compromise on budget (dropping a second cruise night saves about $80), on experience (you get both the bay and the town) and on logistics — in Bai Chay you can hit the night market and a restaurant, which the boat cannot offer.

Cruise vs hotel

A cruise is not simply "more expensive but prettier". It is a different experience: you sleep in a cabin, eat dinner on deck under the stars, and wake up to go kayaking. A hotel is a base you travel out from during the day and return to at night.

When the cruise is non-negotiable

First time here and you want the bay itself — you need the cruise. A day tour shows one route, usually number one with Thien Cung cave; an overnight shows three or four locations, sunrise among the karsts and dinner on deck. That is the difference between seeing the place and spending time in it.

• First visit with at least two days available
• You came for photographs — sunrise and sunset only work from on board
• You want kayaking, squid fishing, a spring-roll class: all in the programme
• You are visiting in the cool months (November–February), when hotel beaches are useless but cruises run year-round

When a hotel alone is enough

• Travelling with children under three — a junk is dull and unsafe for them
• You have cruised here before; the second time adds little
• Serious motion sickness
• Hard budget: three nights in a 3★ hotel cost less than one on a 4★ cruise

When a cruise alone is enough

This is the two-day run from Hanoi: bus at 08:00, on board by noon, overnight in the bay, back in Hanoi by 16:00 the next day. No city hotel needed. It works on a tight schedule, on a $150–200 per-person total, or when Ha Long is a box to tick between Ninh Binh and Sapa.

The districts

The city splits into three zones: touristy Bai Chay with 90% of the hotels, the old town of Hon Gai at a third of the price, and the resort island of Tuan Chau. A 903 m bridge with night lighting links the first two, a causeway reaches the third. Your choice decides whether you wake up beside the night market or half an hour from the nearest restaurant.

Bai Chay (Bãi Cháy) — the tourist centre

The main and most convenient base: a 2 km promenade, a night market with 335 stalls, restaurants at every price point, the Typhoon water park, the Queen Cable Car and the Sun Wheel. It is 7 km and fifteen minutes by taxi to Tuan Chau Marina, where 80% of cruises depart.

The city beach is here too — artificial, imported sand, over a kilometre long. The water is clean but flat, with a gentle entry: convenient for families, weak for a proper beach holiday. 2026 prices: 3★ from 700,000 VND ($27), 4★ with a bay view from 1,800,000 VND ($70), 5★ from 3,500,000 VND ($137).

Hon Gai (Hòn Gai) — the old town

Five minutes across the bridge and you are in a different world. Hon Gai is the administrative centre of Quang Ninh province, where residents rather than tourists live: a cargo port, the Cao Xanh market with the best seafood in the city straight from the tanks, temples, and workers' canteens serving lunch for 50,000 dong.

Rooms are 30–40% cheaper — guesthouses from 250,000 VND ($10), 3★ from 600,000 VND ($24). There are no international 4★+ properties; the chains all sit in Bai Chay and on Tuan Chau. The trade-offs are obvious: 8–10 km to the cruise port, almost no tourist infrastructure, and limited English. The authenticity, though, is maximal.

Tuan Chau (Tuần Châu) — the premium island

An island joined to the mainland by a two-kilometre causeway, holding the premium resorts: Paradise Suites, Wyndham Garden, Tuan Chau Island Holiday Villa. The artificial beach runs 4 km — the longest city beach in northern Vietnam. Sun World Halong Park, with Dragon Park and the Typhoon water park, plus water shows and a dolphinarium, sit alongside.

The appeal is quiet and concentration: pool, spa, restaurants and entertainers all inside the resort. The drawback is that there is nothing beyond it, and a taxi to Bai Chay (10 km) costs 150,000–200,000 VND. Prices: 4★ from 2,200,000 VND ($86), 5★ from 5,000,000 VND ($196).

Eight hotels reviewed

These eight cover every segment, from a 5★ resort with a private beach to a boutique in Hon Gai at $31. All were checked against the aggregators in March 2026, with no brand-new properties lacking reviews and none with suspiciously inflated ratings. Prices are for a standard double with breakfast in shoulder season.

1. Vinpearl Resort & Spa Ha Long (5★)

$176–275 a night · Reu island, ten-minute shuttle to Bai Chay · Booking rating 8.7 from 4,200+ reviews.

The chain's northern flagship occupies an entire island: 384 rooms, a private beach, three pools including an infinity pool over the bay, five restaurants and a water park. The free shuttle to Bai Chay runs every 30 minutes.

Strengths: genuine isolation — only guests on the beach — strong facilities for children, and the bay visible from your balcony. The breakfast buffet runs to a hundred items. Weaknesses: getting into town is awkward, the shuttle runs to a timetable and a mainland taxi costs 150,000 VND; the spa is expensive; in low season the water park does not open daily.

2. Wyndham Legend Ha Long (5★)

$137–216 a night · central Bai Chay, on the promenade · rating 8.5 from 3,800+ reviews.

Thirty-three floors in the middle of the tourist district. The rooftop pool overlooking the bay is the headline attraction. It is 100 m to the promenade, 600 m to the night market and a kilometre to the cable car; the whole staff speaks English and breakfast is served on the 24th floor with a panorama of the bay. Weaknesses: a crowded lobby in season, thin walls, paid parking, and no balconies outside the suites.

3. FLC Grand Hotel Ha Long (5★)

$118–188 a night · on the hill above Bai Chay, 4 km from the centre · rating 8.4 from 2,100+ reviews.

Part of a complex with an 18-hole golf course, opened in 2019, so everything is still fresh. The draw is an Olympic-size pool overlooking the bay. Rooms are generous from 38 m², and the price undercuts Vinpearl and Wyndham at comparable quality. A free shuttle runs hourly. Weaknesses: far from the centre without your own transport, a smaller spa, and noisy older air conditioning units.

4. Novotel Ha Long Bay (4★)

$86–137 a night · Bãi Cháy hill, 1.5 km from the centre · rating 8.6 from 5,400+ reviews.

The best value 4★ in the city. All 225 rooms get a bay view because the hotel sits on the hill above the water, and the rooftop pool is second only to the Wyndham for views. You get the international chain standard — no surprises with housekeeping or service — and a breakfast better than the category average.

Weaknesses: it is fifteen minutes downhill to the promenade and a hard climb back, especially in the heat. In-room Wi-Fi is slow and the rooftop bar only opens in high season.

5. Mường Thanh Luxury Ha Long Centre (4★)

$70–110 a night · central Bai Chay, 200 m from the promenade · rating 8.3 from 6,100+ reviews.

A 508-room property from the Vietnamese chain. It undercuts the international brands while keeping full facilities: pool, spa, three restaurants. Bay views from the upper floors — ask for the 15th or above. Weaknesses: service is friendly but not premium, housekeeping varies by room, and weekends get noisy with corporate groups.

6. Paradise Suites Tuan Chau (4★)

$75–118 a night · Tuan Chau island, 200 m from the marina · rating 8.4 from 1,800+ reviews.

A boutique hotel owned by Paradise Cruises: white throughout, a light Mediterranean aesthetic, floor-to-ceiling windows over the marina. Seventy-one rooms, a small pool and a restaurant with French leanings. It is ideal as a "night zero" before a cruise — three minutes on foot from reception to the pier. Weaknesses: nothing to do beyond the resort, and 150,000 VND for a taxi to Bai Chay.

7. Sea Pearl Hotel (3★)

$35–55 a night · second row in Bai Chay, 500 m from the promenade · rating 8.1 from 1,200+ reviews.

One of the best-value 3★ properties in town: 84 rooms, plain finishes, cleanliness at 4★ level, breakfast included. No pool, no spa — just a hotel. Staff speak English and the Wi-Fi is good. Weaknesses:the view is your neighbours' roofs, breakfast repeats itself after day one, and reception is not staffed overnight.

8. Song Loc Luxury Hotel (3★)

$31–51 a night · Hon Gai waterfront · rating 8.5 from 900+ reviews.

The best option on the old-town side: twelve floors, harbour views, a step from Cao Xanh market. For a 3★ price you get service closer to 4★, and the local seafood restaurants nearby cost a third of the tourist ones. Weaknesses: 10 km to the cruise port (about 250,000 VND by taxi) and empty streets after dark.

Choosing a cruise

The cruise is your main hotel here, and picking one is harder than picking a hotel: 90-plus operators, three price tiers, two bays and stays of one to three nights. This is the short version; the full comparison is in the Ha Long cruise guide.

Ha Long bay or Lan Ha

Ha Long bay is the classic, but thirty years of tourism have crowded it — up to 500 boats on the water at once in high season. Lan Ha is the neighbouring bay, technically part of the Cat Ba archipelago, which UNESCO added to the protected zone in 2023. The same scenery, a hundred-odd boats, and by most accounts prettier. The premium operators — Paradise, Heritage, Indochina Sails — all run there. Bai Tu Long, further north, is for a third visit and a bigger budget.

Cat Ba and Bai Tu Long

Beyond the city-or-cruise question there is a third path: base yourself on Cat Ba island or head into Bai Tu Long bay. Cheaper, quieter, more authentic — but harder logistics and thinner infrastructure.

Cat Ba and Lan Ha bay — the budget alternative

Cat Ba is the largest island in the bay, population 50,000. Cát Bà Town on the south side is where Lan Ha cruises depart. Accommodation runs about half of Bai Chay: guesthouses from 200,000 VND ($8), a 3★ hotel from 500,000 VND ($20), a 4★ resort from 1,500,000 VND ($59).

Strengths: Lan Ha bay on the doorstep, Cát Bà national park with trekking and langurs, climbing that puts the island in Southeast Asia's top three, natural beaches at Cat Co 1–3 rather than imported sand, and the feel of a real Vietnamese town.

Weaknesses: five hours minimum to get here — bus from Hanoi plus ferry, or a limousine to the pier and a speedboat. Out of season (October–March) half the restaurants close. There is almost no premium tier: one 5★, Flamingo Cat Ba, and the rest is local 3–4★. Signal drops in places. More in the Cat Ba island guide.

Bai Tu Long (Bái Tử Long) — premium for a second visit

If Ha Long means "the dragon descending to the sea", Bai Tu Long is "the dragon's children". The bay adjoins Ha Long to the north-east, covers three times the area and is barely touched by mass tourism: its own national park, 600 islands and floating villages without souvenir stalls.

You can only stay here on a cruise — there are no shore hotels, just the port town of Cái Rồng where the junks leave from. Premium cruises start at 7,000,000 VND, about $275 per person per night. The names to know: Indochina Sails Premium, Heritage Binh Chuan, Dragon Legend.

Budget

A full three-day costing for two people, excluding the flight to Hanoi. Accommodation, basic meals, taxis and bay entry fees are all included.

Prices move hard with the season: May to September they drop 20–40%, over Tết they rise 50%. Book three months or more ahead and cruise operators often discount up to 25% for early birds.

Seasonal pricing

High season is November to April: cool (18–25 °C), dry, calm water, prices at their peak and booking needed one to two months out. Low season is May to October: hot, up to 35 °C, humid, with the typhoon peak from July to September. Prices fall 30–40% but cruises can be cancelled.

Travelling with children

With children the rules change: the cruise becomes a difficult call and a resort with facilities becomes close to mandatory. The rule of thumb is that under-threes are not comfortable on a junk — no children's menus, no cots, and restrictions on moving around the deck. From four it works, from six it is genuinely interesting.

Which cruises work with children.From six, a standard 4★ (Era, Aspira) is fine — the programme holds up. The premium 5★ boats (Paradise, Heritage) run no children's programme and are not recommended under ten. Family suites for two adults and two children exist at Heritage, Era and Bhaya. Budget 3★ cabins are too tight for families.

How to book

Agoda usually has the best rates in Asia with transparent fees and frequent promotions. Booking.com carries a wider selection and more reviews but tends to run 5–15% higher. The hotel's own site avoids the commission and may add loyalty perks, though not every property has a usable site and replies can be slow.
