Ha Long and Ha Long Bay in 2026 — the complete guide
Ha Long Bay has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994: nearly two thousand limestone islands rising from emerald water. The city sits 160 km from Hanoi and is the launch point for cruises, caves and kayaking. Here's how to get there, which cruise to pick and when to go.

Couples come for an overnight cruise under the stars, families for the water parks and shallow beaches, photographers chase the morning haze between the karsts, and budget travellers get by on $30–50 a day. Ha Long still feels quieter and more authentic than Vietnam's big beach resorts — you trade room service for a boat deck and a bay full of limestone.
Below: how to get here from Hanoi, which cruise to book, where to stay, what to eat and when to go, with 2026 prices in VND and rough USD.
Ha Long on the map — where it is

Ha Long city sits on the Gulf of Tonkin in Quảng Ninh province, in the far northeast of Vietnam, 160 km from Hanoi. This is not the tropical south — expect a different climate, different scenery and a different mood from Da Nang or Nha Trang.
City vs bay — what's the difference
Ha Long city (Hạ Long) is the provincial capital, home to about 300,000 people — a working port with hotels, restaurants, night markets and a promenade. Ha Long Bay (Vịnh Hạ Long) is the natural UNESCO site: thousands of islands, caves and grottoes. The bay begins right off the city's harbour and stretches for tens of kilometres out to sea.
The city's two districts
| District | What's here | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Bãi Cháy | A 2 km promenade, city beach, a 5,000 m² night market, restaurants and hotels. The harbour where cruises depart | Tourists, families |
| Hồng Gai | The old town: Cao Xanh market (best seafood prices), cheaper lodging, local colour | Budget travellers |
The two districts are joined by the 903 m Bãi Cháy bridge, lit up at night and worth a look.
Neighbouring places
- Hanoi — 160 km west (~2.5–3.5 h by car on the expressway)
- Hai Phong — 70 km southwest (~1.5 h), Vietnam's third-largest city and the nearest airport
- Ninh Binh — 230 km southwest (~3.5 h), often called "Ha Long Bay on land"
The time zone is UTC+7. There is no daylight saving.
Getting to Ha Long
Most travellers arrive from Hanoi. Ha Long has no airport of its own, but the Hanoi–Ha Long expressway (opened in 2024) has cut the drive to about 1.5–2 hours.
From Hanoi to Ha Long
| Option | Time | Price | Comfort |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bus (My Dinh → Bai Chay) | ~3 h | 150,000–250,000 VND (~$6–10) | Medium |
| Limousine van (Gia Lam) | ~2.5 h | 200,000–350,000 VND (~$8–14) | Comfortable |
| Private car / Grab | 1.5–2 h | from 1,500,000 VND (~$60) | High |
| Organised tour | ~3.5 h | Included in the cruise | Easiest |
The bus is the most popular DIY option. Departures leave Mỹ Đình station roughly hourly from 6:00 to 17:00. Reliable operators include Kumho Viet Thanh, Phuc Xuyen and Ha Long Express. Book on vexere.com, through 12Go, or just buy at the station. Around holidays (Tet, 30 April, 2 September), reserve ahead.
An organised tour is the least hassle: a shuttle collects you from your Hanoi hotel in the morning (7:30–8:30). Most cruise companies either include the transfer or add roughly $20 per person for it.
Ha Long Bay — the UNESCO jewel
- Sung Sot Cave (Sửng Sốt): Largest cave, two chambers ~12,000 m² — "Cave of Surprises"
- Thien Cung Cave (Thiên Cung): "Heavenly Palace", dramatic lighting — 300 m from Dau Go
- Dau Go Cave (Đầu Gỗ): ~5,000 m², linked to the 13th-c. Mongol battle — Daily 8:00–18:00
- Ti Top Island (Ti Top): Beach + viewpoint, 420 steps — 360° panorama over the bay
- Sun World Ha Long (214 ha): Dragon Park, water park, cable car — Combo from 600,000 VND (~$24)
- Promenade & night market (Bãi Cháy): 5,000 m², 335 stalls, street food — Haggling expected
- Bai Tho Mountain (Bài Thơ, 106 m): Views over city and bay — 20–30 min climb, free
- Cat Ba Island (Cát Bà, 354 km²): National park, trekking, kayaking — Cat Co 1–3 beaches
- Tuan Chau Beach (Tuần Châu): Man-made, ~500 m — Gentle entry, family-friendly
- Bai Tu Long Bay (Bái Tử Long): Quiet alternative to Ha Long — Fewer boats, cleaner water

The bay is the whole reason to come. UNESCO listed it as a World Heritage Site in 1994 for its aesthetic value, and again in 2000 for its geology. The name Hạ Long means "descending dragon": legend says the gods sent a family of dragons that spat out pearls and jade, which turned into the islands — a barrier against invaders.
The key islands
Ti Top Island (Ti Top) is named after Soviet cosmonaut Gherman Titov, who visited Vietnam with Ho Chi Minh in 1962. It has a small white-sand beach and a viewpoint at the top (420 steps, 15–20 minutes) with a 360° panorama over the bay.
Đỉnh Hương Island is the "incense burner" — its silhouette appears on the 200,000 VND banknote. You can't land (the cliffs are sheer), but every cruise passes it.
The caves
| Cave | Description | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Sửng Sốt (Sung Sot) | The largest, two chambers ~12,000 m² | The "Cave of Surprises", the busiest |
| Thiên Cung (Thien Cung) | The "Heavenly Palace", beautifully lit | By legend, the Dragon King held his daughter's wedding here |
| Đầu Gỗ (Dau Go) | ~5,000 m², 300 m from Thien Cung | Tied to the 13th-century battle against the Mongols |
The caves are open daily 8:00–18:00. Entry is included in the cruise route (from 240,000 VND / ~$10).
Lan Ha Bay — the quiet alternative
South of Ha Long Bay, past Cát Bà island, lies Lan Hạ Bay. It's technically outside the UNESCO zone, but its scenery holds up — and many travellers rate it higher: far fewer boats, cleaner water and wild sandy beaches. It's also home to the floating village of Cái Bèo, one of the largest floating settlements in the world.
💬 "Don't do a day trip — the overnight is where the magic is. Waking up in the middle of the bay is unreal. And ask for a route through Lan Ha Bay: way fewer boats and much prettier than the classic loop." — traveller advice on r/VietnamTravel, 2025
Skip the airport queue in 5–10 min
In winter, immigration lines run 60–90 min. With Fast Track you’re met at the aircraft and taken through the priority lane. Arrange it before you fly.
Telegram managerHa Long Bay cruises

A cruise is the main way to see the bay. From shore you only get the silhouettes of the islands — the magic is out there, among the cliffs, in the caves and lagoons.
Types of cruise
| Type | Length | Price ($/person) | Included |
|---|---|---|---|
| Budget day cruise | 4–6 h | from ~$48 | Transfer, lunch, 1–2 caves, kayaking |
| Overnight 2D/1N (budget) | 2 days / 1 night | ~$108–200 | Cabin, all meals, caves, kayaking, fishing |
| Overnight 2D/1N (luxury) | 2 days / 1 night | ~$300–675 | 5-star cabin with balcony, all-inclusive, spa, tai chi |
| 3D/2N | 3 days / 2 nights | ~$200–800+ | Extended route + Lan Ha + Cat Ba |
The 2D/1N overnight is the sweet spot for most people. In a day and a half you cover the main routes, sleep on the water and catch sunrise among the karsts. Cocktails and stars on deck in the evening; tai chi and coffee with an island view in the morning.
Choosing a cruise operator
Luxury (from ~$300): Paradise Elegance, Bhaya Cruises, Calista Cruise (new for 2025). Mid-range (~$150–300): Dragon Legend, Aqua Elegance. Budget (~$48–150): Amanda Cruise, Renea Cruise, Phoenix Cruise. When comparing, read recent reviews on TripAdvisor and r/VietnamTravel rather than the operator's own gallery — cabins and boats age fast, and the photos often don't.

Bai Chay promenade and night market
The promenade runs 2 km and has a Ferris wheel. The night market spreads over 5,000 m² with 335 stalls: souvenirs, pearls and street food (grilled squid, cheese-topped mussels, rice rolls). Haggling is expected — the first price is usually 2–3x too high.
Cat Ba Island
The bay's largest island (354 km²). Half of it is a national park with mangroves and the white-headed langur (fewer than 70 left in the world). Trekking from 40,000 VND (~$1.60), half-day kayaking on Lan Ha from ~$20, and the Cat Co 1–3 beaches at 30,000–50,000 VND entry.
Bai Tho Mountain and more
Bài Thơ Mountain (106 m, a 20–30 minute climb) gives a panoramic view over the city and bay, and it's free. The rocks carry poems by a 15th-century Vietnamese emperor. Long Tien Pagoda, a Buddhist temple at the foot of the mountain, is free to enter too.
Ha Long's beaches

Ha Long is not a classic beach resort like Nha Trang or Phu Quoc. But there are beaches, and some are genuinely worth it.
| Beach | Type | Entry | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bãi Cháy | Man-made, >1,000 m | Free | Everyone — the main city beach |
| Tuần Châu | Man-made, ~500 m | Free | Families with kids |

| Cat Co 1–3 (Cat Ba) | Natural | 30,000–50,000 VND | Active days out |
Swimming season: April–October. The warmest water is June–September (28–30°C), though rain is likely. April–May and October are the compromise: 23–26°C water and less rain.
Ha Long weather month by month
Ha Long has a subtropical climate with clear seasons. This is northern Vietnam, noticeably cooler in winter than Nha Trang or Phu Quoc — a difference of up to 10–15°C.
| Month | Day / night | Water | Rain | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | 19° / 14° | 22° | 25 mm | Coldest month; cinematic morning fog, but too cold to swim |
| February | 20° / 15° | 21° | 25 mm | Tet raises prices 20–30%; bring a jacket |
| March | 22° / 18° | 22° | 40 mm | Fog lifts, skies clear — one of the best months for a cruise |
| April | 26° / 22° | 24° | 90 mm | Best spring month; clear skies, swimming starts |
| May | 30° / 25° | 28° | 170 mm | Last window before the monsoon; showers still brief |
| June | 32° / 26° | 30° | 300 mm | Monsoon begins; cruises still run |
| July | 32° / 26° | 30° | 325 mm | Peak rain and humidity; typhoon season starts (~10%) |
| August | 31° / 25° | 30° | 445 mm | Wettest month; typhoons ~20% — avoid if you can |
| September | 31° / 24° | 30° | 280 mm | A gamble — clear weeks or three-day downpours; typhoons still possible |
| October | 29° / 22° | 28° | 160 mm | Rain eases; emerald water at 29°C — book 2–3 weeks ahead |
| November | 26° / 19° | 26° | 35 mm | One of the best months: dry, comfortable, fewer tourists |
| December | 22° / 15° | 23° | 20 mm | Driest month; cool, but cruise discounts of 10–15% |
Best time: October–November and March–May. Autumn brings crisp visibility, a calm sea and 24–28°C. Spring is comfortable, and swimming is possible from April.

Exchange rate: 1 USD ≈ 25,000 VND (2026). Cash is still king at markets and small stalls; bigger hotels, resorts and Michelin-listed places take Visa/Mastercard. ATMs at Bai Chay (Vietcombank, BIDV) dispense VND — expect a fee of around 50,000 VND per withdrawal.
Tours to Ha Long
Most travellers book a tour from Hanoi. Where to book: Klook and GetYourGuide (international platforms, free cancellation); at a travel agent in Hanoi's Old Quarter (10–20% cheaper, but fewer guarantees); or direct with the cruise operator (best rates for early bookings).
A group tour is cheaper — 15–30 people, a fixed route. A private tour costs 2–3x more but lets you set the pace. For two people, a private trip can be comparable to a luxury group cruise.

Things to do in Ha Long

Kayaking is the best way to see the bay up close, and almost every cruise includes 30–60 minutes. A separate trip from Cat Ba runs from ~$20 for a half day, ~$40 for a full day. Best October–May.
Rock climbing on the limestone walls of Lan Ha Bay, with routes from 5a to 7c — half a day from ~$30, a full day from ~$50. Fall off and you simply splash into the sea.
Cycling on Cat Ba is 50,000–100,000 VND a day (~$2–4). SUP boards from 100,000 VND an hour on Tuan Chau and Bai Chay beaches.
Snorkelling is possible in summer in Lan Ha Bay — not much coral, but there are fish. For proper diving, head to Phu Quoc or Nha Trang instead.
Visas, money and language
Ha Long is a low-key destination compared with Vietnam's big resort towns — no tourist-trap strips, no touts. For some that's a downside; for many it's the whole appeal.
Visa (by passport): Vietnam grants visa-free entry to citizens of the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain and several other European countries (up to 45 days), and to a longer list for shorter stays. Everyone else — including US, Canadian and Australian passport holders — should apply for the e-visa (90 days, single or multiple entry) online before arrival. Check your own passport's rules, as they change.
Money: the currency is the Vietnamese dong (VND). ATMs in Bai Chay (Vietcombank, BIDV) dispense cash; carry some for markets, cruises and small cafés, since cards aren't accepted everywhere. Visa and Mastercard work at bigger hotels and resorts.
Language: English is basic in hotels and on cruises, and rare at local markets. Google Translate (download the Vietnamese pack offline) is your friend. A little goodwill goes a long way — a smile and pointing get you most of the way.
SIM / eSIM: Viettel, Mobifone or Vinaphone data starts around 100,000 VND (~$4) for 30 days of 4G, sold at Noi Bai airport with your passport. For zero hassle, buy a Vietnam eSIM (Airalo, Holafly) before you fly and connect the moment you land.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Booking the cheapest cruise. The gap between $48 and $100 is the gap between a tired old boat and a decent one. Read recent reviews and check real photos.
- Doing it as a day trip from Hanoi. 6 hours of driving plus 4–6 on the water makes for an exhausting day. The overnight is far better.
- Going in July–August with no backup plan. Typhoons can cancel a cruise, so leave a buffer.
- Forgetting Lan Ha Bay. The classic loop draws crowds; Lan Ha means quiet water and wild beaches.
- Not haggling at the market. The first price is 2–3x too high. Start at 40–50%.
- Skipping warm clothes in winter. December–February on the water means wind and 15–18°C.
- Flying out the day you get back from the cruise. Boats dock around noon, then a shuttle takes 3–3.5 h. Sleep a night in Hanoi.
- Not checking entry tickets are included. Some operators leave out the cave fees (240,000–290,000 VND).

FAQ
How much does a Ha Long Bay cruise cost?
A day cruise from ~$48. An overnight 2D/1N from ~$108 for budget boats and ~$300+ for luxury. A 3D/2N from ~$200. Low season (June–August) can be up to 40% cheaper; peak (October–April) adds 15–30%.
When is the best time to visit Ha Long?
October–November (clear, 24–28°C, little rain) and March–May. Avoid July–August: heat around 33°C, heavy rain and typhoons.
How do I get from Hanoi on my own?
A bus from Mỹ Đình station, roughly hourly 6:00–17:00, about 3 hours, 150,000–250,000 VND (~$6–10). Faster: a shared limousine van (~2.5 h) or a private car/Grab (~1.5–2 h).
Is there an airport in Ha Long?
No. The nearest are Cát Bi in Hai Phong (~70 km, domestic) and Nội Bài in Hanoi (~160 km, the main international gateway).
Ha Long or Ninh Binh?
Different experiences. Ha Long is sea karsts and overnight cruises; Ninh Binh is the same scenery among rice paddies, by rowboat. Ideally do both: 2–3 days in Ha Long plus 1–2 in Ninh Binh (~230 km, ~3.5 h apart).
Can you swim in the bay?
Yes, April to October (water 23–30°C). Cruises stop to swim at Ti Top Island or in Lan Ha Bay.
How many days do I need?
At least two full days (overnight cruise + an evening in town). Three is ideal. For Cat Ba, 4–5 days. A day trip from Hanoi is too exhausting.
Is it safe?
Yes. Low crime. Watch your belongings at the market, wear non-slip shoes in the caves and a life jacket when kayaking.
Is it good for kids?
Very. Children under 1.2 m are usually free on cruises and at Sun World. Tuan Chau beach has a gentle entry. Sun World has a water park and rides, and many cruises have family cabins.
What should I bring home?
Cultured pearls (from certified shops), squid crackers, shell souvenirs and Vietnamese coffee (Trung Nguyen, G7). For food lovers, dried sá sùng (~$150/kg).
