Ha Long tours from Hanoi in 2026: prices, operators and how to choose
1,600 limestone islands, a UNESCO site and Vietnam's signature postcard. It is 130 km from Hanoi — a tour genuinely fits into one day. Here are the prices, the operators, and how to avoid a fake junk.

Ha Long Bay is 1,600 limestone islands in the Gulf of Tonkin, a UNESCO site since 1994 and arguably Vietnam's single most famous view. It is 130 km from Hanoi along an expressway, and a tour really does fit into one day. But a day trip shows you the bay at a gallop, while an overnight cruise unlocks the sunset, the sunrise and the quiet corners the big junks never reach. A full overview of the region is in Ha Long 2026: what to see, how to get there, prices.
Day-tour prices in 2026 start at $35 and run up to $120. A 2D1N cruise costs $90–450 per person, and luxury routes go from $250 a night. In this piece: an honest breakdown of operators, price tables by segment, an hour-by-hour rundown of the day, six red flags to watch when booking, and an FAQ for first-timers.
Prices current as of July 2026. Rate used: 1 USD ~ 25,500 VND.
Why go to Ha Long and how to pick a tour format

Ha Long is not one island or one bay but a whole archipelago of karst cliffs in Vietnam's north-east. Three zones stretch across the water: the central Halong Bay with the Sửng Sốt and Thiên Cung caves, the north-eastern Bái Tử Long with its calm lagoons, and the southern Lan Hạ by Cát Bà island. The big cruise junks sail all three, but the day format only reaches the central part.
Before choosing a tour, answer three questions honestly:
- How many days do you have in Hanoi? If only two, take a day tour and save a night in Hanoi. If three or more, go 2D1N with a night on the water, no question.
- What is your per-person budget? Under $100 means a day cruise or a budget overnight junk. The $150–250 band buys a comfortable mid-range. From $300 you are into premium with a private cabin and spa.
- Do you want the sunset and sunrise on the water? That is the whole reason people book overnight. On a day tour you are on the water from 11:00 to 16:00 — the hottest, emptiest hours, without the magic light.
Tour types: day vs overnight vs 3D2N

Four main formats, and one fork where 80% of first-trip plans get stuck. The comparison below is built from the offerings of GetYourGuide, Klook, Bhaya Cruises, Indochina Junk and Paradise Vietnam.
| Feature | Day tour | 2D1N cruise | 3D2N cruise | Half-day |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Price per person | $35–120 | $90–450 | $240–900 | $25–60 |
| Duration | 11–12 h | 24 h | 48 h | 7–8 h |
| Hours on the water | 3–4 | 18–20 | 30+ | 3–4 |
| Cabin | no | yes | yes | no |
| Sunset & sunrise | no | yes | yes | no |
| Route | central Ha Long | + Bai Tu Long / Lan Ha | + Cat Ba, remote spots | central Ha Long |
| Best for | little time / budget | first visit | couples, photographers | passing through |
Local operators and travel writers agree: for a first visit, 2D1N is the golden middle. Take a day tour if you have only two days in Hanoi and want at least to touch the bay. The 3D2N format is for couples chasing a luxury route into Bái Tử Long or Lan Hạ with private activities.
When a day tour is the right call
A day trip works in three scenarios. First: you have a short layover in Hanoi before flying south or onward across Asia. Second: you are travelling with small children, for whom a night in a cabin on the water is a hard sell. Third: your budget is hard-capped under $50 per person and skipping Ha Long entirely is not an option.
What you get in a single day: 3 hours on a junk with lunch, a visit to the largest cave, Sửng Sốt, an hour of kayaking by Luồn cave, and a stop on Ti Top island with its beach or the climb to the lookout. What you lose: the sunset, the sunrise, the slow pace and any access to Bái Tử Long or Lan Hạ. Day tours simply do not go there.
When to choose 2D1N
If you have 3 days or more in Hanoi, do not hesitate. For $130–200 on a mid-range junk you get a 16–22 m² cabin with a balcony, a barbecue dinner on deck, night squid fishing, sunrise tai chi and a second day with an extra cave or a pearl farm. One night on the water costs as much as two or three nights in a good Hanoi hotel, but the experience is in a different league.
💬 "An overnight cruise is the minimum way to really see it. Waking up to the bay outside your window is genuinely magical. Pick a route through Lan Ha — it is far quieter and prettier." — traveller reviews, Tripadvisor, 2025
Top 10 tour and cruise operators

The list runs by segment, from luxury down to budget, and by TripAdvisor, TourRadar and Klook ratings as of mid-2026. Prices are the minimum for a standard 2D1N or a day cruise, before seasonal discounts of 10–20% (May–September).
| Operator | Segment | Format | From | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Heritage Line | Luxury | 2D1N–3D2N | $450/night | Violet: 6 suites, 12 guests. Bai Tu Long |
| Bhaya Cruises | Premium–Luxury | 2D1N | $200/night | Au Co & Bhaya Soul: wellness, 10 vessels since 2007 |
| Paradise Vietnam | Premium | 2D1N | $180/night | Three decks, spa, balconies |
| Indochina Junk | Premium | 2D1N | $208/night | First licensed Bai Tu Long operator |
| Emperor Cruises | Luxury | 2D1N | $350/night | All-inclusive premium bar, couples focus |
| Sea Octopus | Day premium | Day cruise | $99 | Top-rated day cruise in the bay |
| Dragonfly Cruise | Mid day | Day small-group | $52 | Up to 20 people, booking via Klook |
| Bhaya Classic | Mid | 2D1N | $130/night | Authentic junk, small group |
| Lavender Elegance | Budget | 2D1N–3D2N | $100/night | 3-star, proven mass-market |
| Sun Light Cruise | Budget | 2D1N | $90/night | Bare comfort, basic programme |
What to check when choosing. Beyond the junk's star rating and the price, look at the route. The tags "Bai Tu Long" and "Lan Ha" mean fewer other boats around and cleaner water. "Halong central" is the standard mass-market route with Sửng Sốt cave and Ti Top island, where in high season 15–20 junks moor at the cave at once. Calm versus spectacle — the old dilemma of any popular destination.
Getting set up in Vietnam?
SIM, visas, transfers, tours — our manager sorts it out for you, in English.
Message the managerBudget tours: $35–120 per person
The most popular segment, and at the same time the trickiest. For this money you get a working product, but no illusions: a group junk carrying 30–40 people, a buffet lunch with the basics (rice, vegetables, a couple of seafood dishes), a standard 6–7 hour route.
What a $35–50 day tour includes
- Round-trip transfer Hanoi → Ha Long in a 16-seat minivan
- An English-speaking guide (a private guide in another language usually costs $10–20 more)
- Junk ticket and buffet lunch
- Entry to Sửng Sốt cave
- Kayaking or a bamboo boat at Luồn Cave (often your choice)
- A stop on Ti Top island
- Drinking water and fruit
What is NOT included and what you learn on board
- Alcoholic drinks on the junk (from 60,000 VND / ~$2.40 for a beer)
- A separate kayaking fee at some operators: 150,000 VND (~$6)
- Tips for the guide and crew (recommended 50,000–100,000 VND per person)
- A beach towel for Ti Top: bring your own or rent for 30,000 VND (~$1.20)
- The beach shower after swimming is paid
- Bottled water beyond the first free one (10,000–20,000 VND)
Overnight 2D1N for $75–120
The budget overnight cruises are Sun Light, Lavender Elegance, Pelican and a dozen lookalikes. A 3-star junk, a 16 m² cabin with air conditioning (often switched off at night to save power), a shared shower or a modest en-suite, a simple dinner with a single shrimp or fish dish. The route is standard, around central Halong without entering Bái Tử Long.
What to expect: a working acquaintance with the bay and a sunset from the top deck. What not to expect: spa, a cabin balcony, wine tasting, a private guide. If your goal is to see Ha Long at least once and save money, this is a viable option. If it is an anniversary or a honeymoon, pay $80–100 more and take mid-range.
Mid-range tours: $120–200 — the best value

The most interesting segment for most travellers. This is home to the authentic wooden junks — Bhaya Classic, Swan, Renea, Dragon Pearl, Garden Bay Legend — plus the premium day cruises Sea Octopus, Wonder Ha Long and Dragonfly.
What you get for $130–170 on a 2D1N
- An 18–22 m² cabin with a panoramic window or a small balcony
- Air conditioning running all night
- A 6–8 course dinner (fresh seafood, spring rolls, fruit)
- A bottle of water and a welcome cocktail
- Kayaking included, briefing and gear free
- A route into Bái Tử Long or Lan Hạ, with fewer other junks around
- Morning tai chi on deck, night squid fishing
- A guide with decent English
Mid-range day cruise for $50–99
Sea Octopus at $99 is essentially the premium take on a day tour: a modern steel boat, a glass-roofed lounge, a 9-course lunch, a snail tasting, free wine at lunch. Dragonfly Cruise at $52 on Klook suits anyone who wants a small group of up to 20 people and a calm pace away from the crowds. People usually pick between the two like this: Sea Octopus for the food and presentation, Dragonfly for the intimacy and the lack of a crowd.
Luxury cruises: Heritage Line, Bhaya Soul, Au Co and friends
The segment from $250 a night is no longer a "Ha Long tour" — it is a separate product in the class of a boutique hotel on the water. Here Halong Bay becomes the backdrop for an experience, not the main character.
Heritage Line: design and privacy
A Vietnamese brand built around design and privacy. The flagship Violet is a junk with just 6 suites, a maximum of 12 guests at once. Each cabin is 42 m² with its own balcony jacuzzi. The route runs into Bái Tử Long and out to remote islands the mass operators never reach. From $450 a night per person, up to $700 in high season.
Other vessels: Ginger (extended luxury, 15 cabins) and Ylang (honeymoons, private charters). As of January 2026 Heritage Line moved all its routes into Bái Tử Long — the quieter and prettier part of the archipelago.
Bhaya Cruises: wellness and sustainable luxury
Ten vessels at different levels. The top is Bhaya Soul, built around yoga, meditation, spa treatments and seasonal wellness programmes (detox, mindfulness, retreats). The second flagship, The Au Co, leans into sustainable tourism, cultural programming and tastings of local delicacies. From $250–550 a night.
Indochina Junk: tradition and Bai Tu Long
The first company licensed to cruise Bái Tử Long, back in the 2000s. Dragon Legend and Prince Private Junk are wooden junks with colonial-era charm — no gilding, no glass roofs, but an authentic feel. The programme: sunrise tai chi, a spring-roll cooking class, night squid fishing, a private beach and a BBQ ashore. From $208 a night.
Emperor Cruises and Paradise Sails: premium, Vietnamese style
Emperor Legacy Halong is a flagship with an all-inclusive pitch: a premium bar with wine and spirits included, spa at no extra charge, a focus on couples. Paradise Sails and Paradise Grand from Paradise Vietnam offer three decks, fine-dining restaurants, a free spa hour and balconies in every cabin. From $180–350.
What the luxury segment buys you: a staff-to-guest ratio of 1:1 (even 2:1 on Violet), private dinners on the top deck, an activities programme on request, a hard cap on guests per junk (12–30 instead of 60–100 on the mass boats), and routes into the untouched lagoons of Bái Tử Long and Lan Hạ.
Skip the airport queue in 5–10 min
In winter, immigration lines run 60–90 min. With Fast Track you’re met at the aircraft and taken through the priority lane. Arrange it before you fly.
Telegram managerGetting from Hanoi to the marina
From Hanoi's Old Quarter to Ha Long's main marinas — the Tuan Chau and Bai Chay ports — is about 130 km. Along the CT04 expressway (Hanoi — Hai Phong) and highway NH-18 the drive takes 2.5 hours in normal conditions. From Nội Bài airport it is 160–190 km and about 3 hours.
| Option | Price one-way | Time | For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shuttle bus / limousine van (9 seats) | 250,000–350,000 VND / ~$10–14 pp | 2.5–3 h | Solo, couples, best value |
| Private car (sedan, 4 seats) | 1.6–1.9M VND / ~$65–75 per car | 2.5 h | Families, flexibility |
| Private 7-seater | 1.8–2.2M VND / ~$72–90 per car | 2.5 h | Groups of 4–7 |
| Local bus (My Dinh → Bai Chay) | 120,000–250,000 VND / ~$5–10 pp | 3.5–4 h | Backpackers |
The main thing. If you buy a full tour from an operator, the transfer is already in the price — nothing to book separately. Pickup from your Old Quarter hotel is usually 07:30–08:30, drop-off in the evening at 19:00–20:00.
If you want to travel independently (say, for a cruise-only fare without transfer from Sea Octopus or Paradise), the easiest option is a limousine van from Hanoi Open Bus, Daiichi or Hoang Long, running direct to Tuần Châu Marina. It costs $12–14 one way, with departures every 30 minutes from 06:30 to 17:00. A full breakdown of every transfer option, with schedules and contacts, is in the guide How to get from Hanoi to Ha Long.
A standard day, hour by hour

This is what a classic day tour from Hanoi looks like, with lunch, a cave and kayaking. If you take an overnight, the first day is identical: after 16:30 the junk stays anchored in a lagoon, then dinner and a night on board.
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| 07:30–08:30 | Pickup from your Old Quarter hotel in a minivan |
| 08:30–10:30 | Drive Hanoi → Tuan Chau port on the CT04 expressway, one café stop |
| 10:30–11:00 | Arrival at the port, boarding the junk, welcome drink, safety briefing |
| 11:00–12:30 | Cruise with lunch among the limestone islands, seafood or buffet |
| 12:30–13:30 | Landing on Bo Hon islet, Sung Sot ("Surprise") cave — the largest in the bay, 10,000 m² |
| 13:30–14:30 | Kayaking or a bamboo boat by Luon cave (about 30 minutes on the water) |
| 14:30–15:30 | Stop at Ti Top island: the beach, or the 400-step climb to the lookout |
| 15:30–16:30 | Return to Tuan Chau port |
| 16:30–19:00 | Drive back to Hanoi, hotel drop-off |
💬 "The cave started out calm while we walked with just our group. Then several boats pulled up and hundreds of tourists poured out. Inside, it instantly turned unbearable." — traveller review, Tripadvisor, 2025
What to pack
Nothing exotic is required, but a few small items make or break the day — especially off-season or with an overnight.
- Non-slip shoes. The marble steps in Sửng Sốt are wet, and Ti Top is a 400-step climb. Flip-flops, bad; trainers or hiking sandals, good.
- Swimwear and a towel. For the beach on Ti Top and the jacuzzi on luxury junks. Towels are provided on overnights, but not on day tours.
- Sunscreen SPF 30+ and a cap. The sun on the water is fierce even in March.
- A light rain jacket or a folding umbrella. Even in the dry season, short tropical downpours happen.
- A power bank. On budget junks the cabin sockets may not work during the day, and your phone will die after 3 hours of photos.
- Cash in VND. For tips, drinks on board and small buys on the beach.
- A warm layer or windbreaker. From December to February it is windy on the water, +15…+18 °C.
- Motion-sickness tablets. Bring them if you are prone. In the dry season the water is almost flat, but from June to September a short storm can leave a couple of choppy hours.
- A light daypack. Water, sunscreen, a layer and a camera do not fit in a small bag all at once.
Best time of year for a tour

Ha Long runs year-round, but the experience changes radically by season. The dry season (October–April) is the all-round best; the wet season (May–September) brings low prices and the risk of a tour cancelled by a typhoon.
| Season | Months | Temperature | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spring, good | March–April | +18…+26 °C | Morning mist, soft sea, a hazy, dreamy look |
| Summer, risky | June–September | +28…+33 °C | Heat, thunderstorms, typhoon risk. Tours cancelled in storms |
| Autumn, best | October–November | +22…+28 °C | Dry, calm, 10+ km visibility |
| Winter, for aesthetes | December–February | +15…+20 °C | Dry but cool and often misty. Swimming is a matter of taste |
Peak pricing: late December (Christmas and New Year), mid-February (Tết), and October. In these windows prices rise 30–50% — book 2–3 months ahead. Low season with 10–20% discounts: May, early June, late September. If the weather cooperates it is excellent value — but there is always the risk of a 24-hour cancellation from a typhoon. A full month-by-month weather breakdown is in Ha Long weather by month.
Where and how to book a tour
Five working channels, each with its own logic. For most travellers the sweet spot is GetYourGuide or Klook, for the payment protection and reviews. For a detailed cruise choice, the local aggregators work.
GetYourGuide
A European platform in English, with free cancellation up to 24 hours ahead and card payment protection. Prices are a touch higher than operators' own sites (by 5–10%), but you get the guarantees and 24/7 support in return. The best choice for a day tour and a standard 2D1N.
Klook
The Asian leader, especially strong on small-group formats and niche junks. Prices run 5–15% below GetYourGuide, and the reviews from Asian travellers are more detailed. Easy to pay by card or Apple Pay. Stronger on day cruises.
TourRadar, Viator and local aggregators
TourRadar is a platform for multi-day tours with verified ratings, ideal for a trip around the whole north of Vietnam. Viator (TripAdvisor) has the biggest catalogue, but prices run 10–20% higher. Local aggregators BestPriceTravel and HalongBayTours.com give transparent boat comparisons on a "stars × route × price" matrix, with frequent promos of 15–25% off.
Checklist: how to vet an operator before you pay
- At least 100 TripAdvisor reviews with a 4.5+ rating
- A legal entity in Vietnam (company name and registration number)
- A corporate email (not Gmail) and an official phone number
- A booking confirmation by email with a full list of inclusions
- Card payment (chargeback if there is a dispute), not a bank transfer to a personal account
- A Vietnam Ministry of Tourism licence for overnight cruises (requestable by email)
Red flags: six signs of a scam
In Ha Long, as in any mass destination, an industry of scam offers has grown up. The six most common scripts by which foreign travellers lose money.
💬 "Scam pages and sites copy well-known brands almost wholesale — logos, photos, text. Contact is limited to a personal mobile with a push to urgently wire money to a bank account." — per vietnamdiscovery.com, 2025
1. A clone site of a well-known brand
Scammers copy the design of Indochina Junk, Paradise Vietnam or Bhaya Cruises almost entirely. The tell is the contact — a personal mobile and a push to transfer money to a private account "to secure the booking urgently." Defence: always check the URL in the address bar (the real ones: indochina-junk.com, paradisevietnam.com, bhayacruises.com) and read reviews directly on TripAdvisor.
2. A price far below the market
If you are offered a "2D1N luxury cruise for $30" or a "day tour for $15," that is not a discount but a bait-and-switch. After you pay, you are moved to a 2-star junk on a different route without half the promised activities. The real 2026 floor for a budget 2D1N is $75, and $35 for a day tour.
3. Hidden charges on board
On board it suddenly turns out that drinks, cave entry and kayaking cost extra. The final bill doubles or triples. Defence: request a written list of inclusions/exclusions before paying, and screenshot the confirmation.
4. Street sellers by Hoan Kiem lake
A "friendly local" approaches near Hoàn Kiếm or the Cathedral, promising "no pressure, just helping." They describe a dream cruise for $35. The result is a $400 bill, no refunds, and no tour. Defence: never book with street sellers, even if you have already shared a beer.
5. A route changed without warning
Key stops (Sửng Sốt, Ti Top, Bái Tử Long) are suddenly trimmed or dropped. Kayaking is cancelled "due to weather" under a clear sky. Defence: lock the route in the email confirmation and compare it with what you are told on board.
6. Aggressive upselling on board
An hour after departure you are offered an "upgrade to a balcony luxury cabin for $80 cash" or a "private dinner for $120." This often targets couples. Defence: decide in advance whether you want any upgrades, and budget for it.
Alternatives: Bai Tu Long, Lan Ha and Ninh Binh

Ha Long is the most hyped bay, but not the only one. If you want the same karst islands without the crowds, there are three working alternatives.
Bai Tu Long Bay
The north-eastern part of the archipelago, administratively separate from Halong but geologically part of the same system. Tours here are almost all overnight (a day cannot reach it in time). Main operators: Indochina Junk, Heritage Line (all routes moved here as of January 2026) and Cycad Cruise (6-star, opened October 2025). Fewer other boats in the frame, cleaner water, and a route that stops at Vung Viêng, a floating fishing village.
Lan Ha Bay
The southern part bordering Cát Bà island. It suits anyone who wants to combine a cruise with beach time. Operators: Garden Bay, Orchid, Stellar of the Seas, Mon Cheri. Prices are comparable to central Halong. You can start from Cát Bà port (ferry from Hai Phong), bypassing Hanoi. A detailed guide is in Cat Ba island and Lan Ha Bay.
Ninh Binh: the "dry Ha Long"
If you do not like being on the water, get seasick easily, or just want another day trip from Hanoi alongside Ha Long, consider Ninh Binh. It is "karst on land": the same limestone cliffs, but among rice paddies and rivers. Boat tours along Tam Cốc and Tràng An, the ancient capital Hoa Lư, and the Bái Đính pagoda. A day from Hanoi runs $25–50. A full rundown of every day trip from the capital is in Day trips from Hanoi.
Booking checklist
A final checklist so nothing slips through. Save it and run through the points before you pay.
- Book 2–4 weeks ahead (2–3 months in high season)
- Check the operator's licence for overnight cruises (request it by email)
- Get an email confirmation with a full list of inclusions and the route
- Pay by card, not by bank transfer to a personal account
- Compare at least 3 options in the same segment
- Read at least 20 recent reviews (from the last 6 months) on TripAdvisor
- Check the weather for your tour date 3–5 days out and again 24 hours out
- Buy travel insurance that covers tour cancellation
- Save the operator's contacts in WhatsApp or Zalo
- Bring a printout or screenshot of the voucher — the marina may have no internet
- Confirm the exact Hanoi pickup spot and time the day before
- Withdraw 1–2M VND (~$40–80) in cash ahead of time for tips, drinks and small buys
FAQ: common questions
Should I do a day trip or stay overnight?
If you have 2 days in Hanoi, take a day tour and squeeze in Ninh Binh too. With 3 days or more, go 2D1N without question. Sunset and sunrise on the water, a slower pace, a barbecue dinner and access to Bái Tử Long or Lan Hạ are what make people come back. A day for $50 versus a night for $130: the gap is worth it.
How much does a Ha Long day tour from Hanoi cost in 2026?
From $35 (a big group junk, buffet lunch, basic route) to $120 (a premium Sea Octopus cruise with wine tasting and a glass-roofed lounge). The sweet spot is $50–70 on a mid-range junk with kayaking included. A half-day tour (four hours on the water) starts around $25.
Which operator is best for a budget under $100?
For a day tour, look at Sea Octopus ($99), Dragonfly Cruise via Klook ($52–70) or Wonder Ha Long ($60). For an overnight 2D1N under $120, Lavender Elegance, Pelican Cruise or Sun Light work. Do not trust prices below $35 for a day tour or $75 for an overnight.
Can I combine Ha Long and Ninh Binh in 2 days?
Yes, and it is a popular combination. Day 1: Ninh Binh (boats on Tràng An or Tam Cốc), back to Hanoi in the evening. Day 2: a day tour to Ha Long. Both work as day trips from Hanoi. Total budget for two: $150–250 including lunches.
What is the difference between Ha Long, Bai Tu Long and Lan Ha?
Three parts of the same archipelago. Ha Long is the central, busiest zone with the main caves. Bai Tu Long is the north-east, fewer tourists, calm lagoons, fishing villages. Lan Ha is the south, by Cát Bà island, easy to combine with beach time.
What is included in a standard tour?
A round-trip minivan transfer from your hotel to the marina, the junk ticket, a seafood buffet lunch, an English-speaking guide, a visit to Sửng Sốt cave, a stop on Ti Top island, kayaking or a bamboo boat, and water and fruit. NOT included: alcohol, tips, towel rental, the shower after swimming.
Is it safe to swim in Ha Long?
Yes. At Ti Top and in the Lan Hạ area the water is clean and safe, and the junks carry life jackets. The main risks are jellyfish in summer (June–August) and the sun. From December to February the water is cool (+18…+20 °C).
What if my tour is cancelled because of the weather?
When a storm warning is issued, the Quảng Ninh maritime authority bans boats from sailing and tours are cancelled 12–24 hours ahead. Serious operators offer a 100% refund or a date change. GetYourGuide and Klook process automatic card refunds.
Should I tip the guide and crew?
Not required, but customary. The norm for a day tour is 50,000–100,000 VND (~$2–4) for the guide and the same for the junk crew. For an overnight 2D1N, 200,000–300,000 VND (~$8–12) per day. Tips are given in cash at the end of the tour.
How do I get from Hanoi without buying a tour?
A limousine van from Hanoi Open Bus, Daiichi or Hoang Long — $12–14 one way, every 30 minutes from 06:30 to 17:00 out of the Old Quarter, direct to Tuần Châu Marina. About 2.5 hours. Alternatives: a Grab Car (around $65 per car) or a local bus from My Dinh ($5–10, but 3.5–4 hours).
Can I go with kids or older travellers?
With children from age 4 — yes, on mid-range and luxury junks. Most cruises give a 50% discount for children 4–11 and go free under 3. For older travellers, take a private transfer and a cabin with a balcony. The Ti Top climb is 400 steps and hard for seniors, so better to stay on the beach.
Where do I find English-speaking Ha Long tours?
Almost every mainstream tour runs in English by default. Book through GetYourGuide or Klook, or directly with operators like Sea Octopus and Indochina Junk. A private English-speaking guide costs $15–25 more per person; groups of 4–12 are common.
Bottom line: what to pick for a first visit
If you have 2 days in Hanoi, take a day tour with any mid-range operator for $50–80 with kayaking included. Sea Octopus at $99 — if you want the premium format.
With 3 days or more, go for an overnight 2D1N in the mid segment: Bhaya Classic ($130), Swan Cruise ($150), Garden Bay Legend ($140). A Lan Ha or Bai Tu Long route, not central Ha Long. Honeymoon or anniversary? A luxury 2D1N: Heritage Line Violet ($450), Bhaya Soul ($350), Indochina Junk Dragon Legend ($280).
Book through GetYourGuide or Klook for the payment protection, 2–4 weeks ahead. Check the weather 3–5 days out. Get insurance that covers cancellation. And do not fall for "deals from $25" from street sellers by Hoàn Kiếm: that is not Ha Long, that is a lost day and lost money.
The bay is worth seeing at least once. Better still with a night on the water, so the sunset over a thousand islands stays with you.
