Phu Quoc gets around 2,370 hours of sun a year and averages 28–30 °C, with the sea never dropping below 27 °C. But 3,030 mm of annual rain makes the month you choose the whole game — the gap between a sunny beach week and a tropical downpour outside your window.

Did you know?Phu Quoc is Vietnam's largest island (574 km²) and sits closer to Cambodia than to the Vietnamese mainland. The Gulf of Thailand shields it from the typhoons that regularly batter the country's central coast.

Phu Quoc climate — the dry and rainy seasons

Dry season (November–April): white sand, turquoise water, minimal rain

Phu Quoc sits in the Gulf of Thailand at 10° north — a tropical monsoon climate with two distinct seasons. The northeast monsoon brings dry weather from November to April; the southwest monsoon brings the rain from May to October. The good news for travellers: the island is sheltered from typhoons, which skirt the Gulf of Thailand.

Dry season (November–April)

Rainfall runs from 20 to 140 mm a month. Humidity is 72–76%. The sea is calm and the water clear.

November and December are transitional — rain still happens, just less often. The full dry season kicks in around January. Peak tourist traffic is December–March: Phu Quoc hotels hit their highest rates and the popular beaches fill up.

April is the hottest month. The air climbs to 34–36 °C, but rain is still scarce. It suits anyone who doesn't mind the heat — and prices are lower.

Rainy season (May–October)

Tropical downpours on Phu Quoc usually last 1–2 hours — with sun in between

The southwest monsoon opens up at full strength. The peak is July–September: up to 400 mm a month and 20-plus rainy days.

Don't cross these months off yet, though. Rain on Phu Quoc isn't a drawn-out drizzle but short tropical bursts of 1–2 hours, usually in the afternoon or at night. In between comes the sun, and you can still lie on the beach.

💬 "First three days on Long Beach it rained non-stop with big waves, but over on Bãi Sao on the other side it was calm — we swam even in the rain." — traveller report, Tripadvisor, 2025

The upside of the wet season: room rates fall 30–50%, there are far fewer tourists, the landscape is at its greenest and the waterfalls run full. If you can live with a couple of hours of rain a day, it's a decent option for a budget trip.

💰
Savings: In the rainy season (May–October) rates at Phu Quoc hotels drop 30–50%. A four-star room with a pool that costs ~$55–75 a night in January runs ~$28–45 in July.

The sea off Phu Quoc is warm 12 months a year — from 27 °C in winter to 30 °C in April–May. It's comfortable to swim in any time.

In winter (December–February) the water is 27–28 °C, its coolest, but still bath-warm. Spring (March–May) heats it to 29–30 °C. Through summer and autumn (June–November) it stays steady at 28–29 °C, though the west coast gets rough in the wet season. Per-month figures are in the table below.

One thing to know: the west coast (Long Beach) turns choppy in the rainy season — waves and murky water. The east coast (Bãi Sao) stays calmer then. If you're coming in summer, pick the east-coast beaches.

⚠️
Heads up:From May to October the west coast (Long Beach) can develop rip currents. Don't swim out far, and watch for red flags on the beach — they mean swimming is banned.

The best window is December to March: dry, sunny, calm sea and 30–32 °C without stifling heat. But "best" depends on why you're coming.

February is statistically the driest month. Some years not a single drop falls the whole month.

Budget tight? Look at May or October. In these shoulder months there's less rain than at the monsoon peak, and hotel rates are still low.

Visa note: Phu Quoc no longer runs its old visa exemption separately — plan a standard entry. Most nationalities (US, UK, EU, Australia and many more) can get a 90-day e-visaonline before flying. Check your passport's rules on the official portal, since terms vary by nationality.

January–February

Perfect months. Almost no rain — 20–30 mm all month (2–5 days of brief showers). Days 30–31 °C, nights 23 °C, sea 28 °C, 8 hours of sun daily.

This is high season: hotels are full and rates are at their peak. Book 2–3 months out — the best places go fast. Long Beach and Bãi Sao are in great shape: clear water, flat calm.

March–April

March is the last genuinely comfortable month: 32 °C, 55–80 mm of rain, still 8 hours of sun. Slightly fewer tourists than January–February.

April is hot. The air hits 33–34 °C, sometimes 36 °C. Rain climbs to 120–140 mm, but the showers are still brief. If you handle heat well, April buys you good weather at lower prices.

💬 "Got lucky in May: just one rainy spell over four days on Phu Quoc, temps 30–35 °C — great weather for a holiday." — traveller on Tripadvisor, 2025

May–June

The shift into the rainy season. May: 190–250 mm, 17–18 rainy days. June: 300–350 mm, 19–20 days. But remember — the rain usually falls for 1–2 hours in the afternoon.

The plus side: room rates drop, crowds thin out, you can haggle. Sun and beach in the morning, downpour and spa in the afternoon.

July–August

The rain peaks. August is the wettest month: up to 400 mm, 20–22 rainy days, 85% humidity. The west coast gets rough. Bãi Sao in the east is the escape — noticeably weaker waves there.

Go or not? If you want quiet, rock-bottom prices and don't mind rain — sure. If you're dreaming of cloudless beach days, wait for December.

September–October

September is still wet (280–330 mm), but by October rainfall eases to 250–300 mm. October is a good compromise: prices low, rain already lighter than in summer. By late October the weather settles.

November–December

November is transitional: rain still happens (120–210 mm), but the season is ending. It usually straightens out by mid-November.

December: 80–110 mm, 7–9 rainy days, 7 hours of sun. High season begins. Prices rise, but the weather already delivers. New Year on Phu Quoc is popular — book well ahead.

What to pack for Phu Quoc

Straw hat, SPF 50 sunscreen and sunglasses on the beach
A hat, SPF 50+ and decent sunglasses are non-negotiable on the island

There's no one-size list — it depends on the season. Here's what actually earns its place.

Dry season (November–April)

  • Light cotton or linen clothing
  • A hat and sunglasses — essential
  • SPF 50+ (the UV index on Phu Quoc is 10–12 — you'll burn in 20 minutes)
  • A light layer for over-air-conditioned indoor spaces

Rainy season (May–October)

  • A compact rain poncho — an umbrella won't save you from a tropical downpour
  • Sandals with good grip or waterproof shoes
  • Quick-dry clothing
  • A waterproof phone pouch
  • Mosquito repellent — there are noticeably more of them after the rain

Year-round

  • A small first-aid kit: paracetamol, anti-diarrhoea meds, antiseptic, plasters
  • Small-denomination VND in cash — not everywhere takes cards
  • A plug adapter (types A/C)

For a fuller picture, the Phu Quoc guide covers getting there, beaches and getting around. Doing several regions? The north and south have very different climates, so plan month by month.

🎯
Local hack:Buy a poncho on the island for 20,000–30,000 VND (~$0.80–1.20) — they're sold on every corner. Don't lug a bulky umbrella from home; it won't hold up against a tropical downpour anyway.

Rainy-day things to do on Phu Quoc

Cosy cafés are the best place to wait out a tropical downpour with a coffee

The wet season runs May to October. It peaks in July–September, with 300–400 mm of rain a month. The rain is usually short — a tropical downpour of 1–2 hours, most often in the afternoon or at night. Mornings are almost always sunny, so you can still swim and sunbathe.

When is the best time to visit Phu Quoc?

December to March: dry, 30–32 °C, calm sea and 8 hours of sun a day. For a cheaper trip, aim for May–June or October, when prices drop 30–50% and the rain is either not yet heavy or already easing. For diving and snorkelling, November–March is ideal.

What is the sea temperature on Phu Quoc?

Warm all year: from 27–28 °C in winter (December–February) to 30 °C in spring (April–May). Swimming is comfortable in any month — even in the coolest weeks it feels like a heated pool.

Can you swim on Phu Quoc during the rainy season?

Yes. The east coast (Bãi Sao beach) stays calmer even at the monsoon peak. The west coast (Long Beach) can get waves and murky water. Tip: if a storm hits Long Beach, cross to Bãi Sao, which is often flat calm.

Which month is the hottest on Phu Quoc?

April: 33–34 °C by day, occasionally up to 36 °C. Humidity isn't at its peak yet (76%) but it feels like a sauna. If you do badly in heat, pick January–March, with a comfortable 30–32 °C and a light breeze.
