Phan Thiet or Nha Trang: which Vietnam beach resort to pick in 2026
Phan Thiet and Mui Ne are 15-25% cheaper and far quieter, and shine from November to March. Nha Trang wins on its own airport, infrastructure and a March-to-August season. We break down beaches, weather, hotels, food and things to do — with 2026 prices in VND and USD.

The choice between Phan Thiet and Nha Trang comes down to three things: when you are travelling, how much you want to spend, and the kind of trip you are after. Phan Thiet (the resort strip is really Mui Ne) is 15-25% cheaper, noticeably quieter, and at its best in winter — November to March. Nha Trang wins on its own airport, a dense tourist infrastructure, and a March-to-August season.
Below we compare both resorts across every criterion, with 2026 prices in Vietnamese dong and rough US-dollar figures.
Prices are current as of April 2026. Rate used: ~25,000 VND ≈ $1.
- Mui Ne (Mũi Né): Resort strip — Surfing, kitesurfing, beaches
- Phan Thiet centre (Phan Thiết): City centre — Markets, restaurants
- Red Dunes (Đồi Cát Bay): Free — Next to Mui Ne
- White Dunes (Bàu Trắng): 30,000 VND (~$1.20) — 30 km from Mui Ne
- Fairy Stream (Suối Tiên): Free — A walk up the riverbed
- Ke Ga Lighthouse (Hải Đăng Kê Gà): 15,000 VND (~$0.60) — 30 km from Phan Thiet

Phan Thiet and Mui Ne — what kind of place is it?

Phan Thiết is a city in south-east Vietnam, 350,000 people. It sits 200 km from Ho Chi Minh City and 320 km from Cam Ranh. The city itself is not touristy — markets, fishing boats, pagodas. Its economy was built for centuries on fishing and on making fish sauce, nước mắm, and that character has not gone anywhere.
The resort strip is Mũi Né, a village 20 km to the east. When people talk about a "Phan Thiet holiday," they mean Mui Ne — the ribbon of hotels, restaurants and kite schools along the coast. The rule is simple: Phan Thiet is the administrative city, Mui Ne is the resort. Our full Mui Ne guide and Phan Thiet guide cover each in detail.
Between city and resort runs a coastal road, and the fishing harbour is on the way: blue, red and green hulls against an orange sky. Phan Thiet is one of those Vietnamese places where working fishing life is not hidden behind resort walls.
There is no airport. The nearest is in Ho Chi Minh City (Tan Son Nhat), 4-5 hours away by bus or train. That is the main downside versus Nha Trang. The upside: on the drive down from Ho Chi Minh you can stop at the Ke Ga lighthouse or the Ninh Thuan vineyards.
Binh Thuan is the driest province in Vietnam — hence the dunes: the climate is closer to semi-desert than tropical. Little rain, 300-plus days of sun a year.
💬 "Mui Ne is Vietnam without the rush. No crowds, no high-rises, but miles of empty beach and honest prices. If you just want to live by the sea, it is ideal — Nha Trang is for the party, Mui Ne is for the reset." — expat forums, r/VietnamTravel, 2025

Nha Trang is the capital of Khanh Hoa province, 400,000-plus people. The city stretches along the bay for 7 km — in 2003 it joined the Worldbays Club list of the world's most beautiful bays. In high season it can feel twice as busy as the numbers suggest.
Cam Ranh Airport takes direct international flights and sits 40 km from the centre, about 45 minutes by taxi. Land, jump in a Grab, and you are on the beach within the hour.
Nha Trang is Vietnam's most tourist-facing coastal city. Menus in English are the norm, tour desks are on every block, and the Lộc Thọ district is wall-to-wall restaurants, dive shops and travel agents. It carries a large share of Vietnam's beach tourism, so services are geared to foreign visitors in a way Phan Thiet's are not.
The main draw is the infrastructure. Vinpearl with its water park and cable car, island trips with snorkelling, dozens of dive centres, mud baths, malls and nightclubs. Healthcare is decent too, with several clinics used to treating travellers. See our full Nha Trang guide.
💬 "Mui Ne is for slowing down, Nha Trang is for doing things. Both are worth it — just not for the same trip." — traveller reviews, Tripadvisor, 2025
Skip the airport queue in 5–10 min
In winter, immigration lines run 60–90 min. With Fast Track you’re met at the aircraft and taken through the priority lane. Arrange it before you fly.
Telegram managerWeather and seasons — the deciding factor

The two resorts have mirror-image seasons. Remember one rule and the choice makes itself: when Phan Thiet is dry and warm, Nha Trang is wet — and vice versa.
Phan Thiet: November–March
The high season lines up with the northern winter. From November to March there is almost no rain, air 26-33°C, water 25-26°C.
| Month | Air °C | Water °C | Rain mm | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| November | 26–31 | 26 | 50 | Season starts |
| December | 25–30 | 25 | 20 | High season |
| January | 26–31 | 25 | 10 | High season |
| February | 27–32 | 25 | 5 | High season |
| March | 28–33 | 26 | 15 | High season |
From May to October it rains. The downpours are short but heavy. The sea turns rough and red flags are common. But this is exactly why kiters come: the summer winds make Mui Ne a kitesurfing paradise.
Nha Trang: March–August
The best months are March through August. Calm sea, little rain, air 25-33°C.
| Month | Air °C | Water °C | Rain mm | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| March | 24–30 | 25 | 20 | Good |
| April | 25–32 | 26 | 20 | Excellent |
| May | 26–33 | 28 | 50 | Excellent |
| June | 26–33 | 28 | 40 | High season |
| July | 26–33 | 28 | 30 | High season |
| August | 26–33 | 28 | 40 | High season |
From October to December comes the monsoon. November can see up to 300 mm of rain and 2-metre waves. January and February are cool by local standards (22-27°C) and windy.

Beaches and the sea

The Mũi Né beach runs 10 km. Golden sand, a gentle slope, only a handful of people even in January. The catch: wind and waves. Currents can cloud the water, and in places concrete resort ramps replace sand.
The wind is both curse and gift. Swimming with kids is not always easy, but Mui Ne ranks in the world's top 10 for kitesurfing. Nearby the white and red dunes stretch for tens of square kilometres of sand, like a slice of the Sahara.
Nha Trang's beach is 7 km inside the city, along the promenade. Yellow sand, cleaned daily. In summer (March-August) the sea is calm and turquoise — a pleasure to swim in. The islands are their own story: Hòn Mun for snorkelling and Hòn Tằm with sun loungers and cafes.
| Criterion | Phan Thiet / Mui Ne | Nha Trang |
|---|---|---|
| Beach length | 10 km, spacious | 7 km, urban |
| Crowds | Few people | Busy in season |
| Water clarity | Average, often murky | Good in season |
| Waves | Frequent, strong wind | Calm sea in summer |
| Island beaches | None | Hon Mun, Hon Tam |
| Surf / kite | World top 10 | No conditions |
| Access | Parts owned by hotels | Open 7 km |
Want an empty beach and surf? Phan Thiet. Clear water and islands? Nha Trang.
Getting there
To Nha Trang — easy
Cam Ranh Airport takes direct international flights, and low-cost connections through Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi are frequent. From Cam Ranh to central Nha Trang is 40 km:
- Grab / taxi: 300,000–350,000 VND (~$12–14), 45 min
- Airport bus: ~65,000 VND (~$2.60), 1 h
- Hotel transfer: often free at 4–5-star properties
To Phan Thiet — via Ho Chi Minh City
No airport of its own. The routine: fly into Ho Chi Minh City (Tan Son Nhat), then cover 200 km overland.
| Transport | Time | Price | Comfort |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sleeper bus | 4–4.5 h | ~$4–7 | Medium |
| Train SPT2 | 3.5 h | ~$16–18 | Good |
| Taxi | 3–4 h | ~$60–70 | High |
| Private transfer | 3–4 h | from ~$80 | High |
On logistics, Nha Trang wins hands down — a direct flight plus a 45-minute taxi, versus a connection and 4-5 hours overland.
Hotels and stays — price comparison

In the same category, Phan Thiet is 15-25% cheaper. But Nha Trang offers far more choice — from hostels to five-star resorts from the big international chains.

| Guesthouse | from ~$10 | from ~$12 | −18% |
| 3-star hotel | ~$15–25 | ~$28–35 | −30% |
| 4-star hotel | from ~$30 | from ~$35 | −15% |
| 5-star hotel | from ~$90 | from ~$75 | +19% |

In Mui Ne almost all hotels line up along the main road. Choose by the beach, not the stars — neighbouring hotels can front very different stretches of shore.
Nha Trang also works for a longer stay: a studio from ~$90-135/month, a one-bedroom from ~$200-280.
Food and eating out

You feel the price gap from the first meal. Pho in Mui Ne is 40,000-60,000 VND (~$1.60-2.40), the same bowl in Nha Trang 120,000-150,000 VND (~$4.80-6). Two to three times more.
| Item | Phan Thiet | Nha Trang |
|---|---|---|
| Phở (pho bo) | ~$1.60–2.40 | ~$4.80–6 |
| Lunch for two | ~$7–8 | ~$9–15 |
| Grilled fish | ~$7 | ~$9–15 |
| Pasta / burger | ~$3.70 | ~$5.50 |
| Beer (0.33) | ~$0.80 | ~$0.95 |
Phan Thiet has a scattering of international restaurants and dozens of Vietnamese cafes. Seafood is caught in the morning and on your plate by lunch — prawns, squid and crab at prices Nha Trang forgot long ago. The cheapest is at the fish market in the city centre.
Nha Trang wins on variety: from street markets to bay-view restaurants. The seafood street of Bo Ke lines up tanks by the door. English menus are everywhere, alongside Italian, Indian and Western options.
Vietnamese beer (Saigon, Tiger, 333) costs the same in shops: 12,000-15,000 VND (~$0.50-0.60) a can. Nha Trang restaurants add a bigger markup. Cocktails in Mui Ne from 80,000 VND (~$3.20), in Nha Trang from 120,000 VND (~$4.80).

Things to do compared
| Criterion | Phan Thiet / Mui Ne | Nha Trang |
|---|---|---|

| Active sport | Kitesurfing, surfing | Diving, snorkelling |
| Theme parks | None | Vinpearl |
| Nightlife | Almost none | Clubs, bars, rooftops |
| Shopping | Mini-marts, markets | Malls, night market, Lotte |
| Spa & mud | A few spas | Mud baths, hot springs |
| Day trips | Da Lat (4 h) | Islands (20–40 min) |
On sheer volume of things to do, Nha Trang wins by a mile. But Phan Thiet holds its own cards: the dunes, the Ke Ga lighthouse, world-class kitesurfing — none of which Nha Trang has.

Can't decide? Do both. The resorts are 320 km and a 6-7-hour bus apart. A quiet week in Mui Ne, then a move to Nha Trang for the fun — a proven plan. For a wider view, see our Phu Quoc guide, another island contender.

FAQ
Are Phan Thiet and Mui Ne the same place?
No. Phan Thiet is a city of 350,000, the capital of Binh Thuan province. Mui Ne is a resort village 20 km to the east, where all the hotels and kite schools are. When a booking site says "Phan Thiet," it usually means Mui Ne.
When is the best time to visit Phan Thiet?
November to March. Almost no rain, air 26-33°C, water 25-26°C. February is the driest month (5 mm). Summer brings rain, but the winds are ideal for kitesurfing. The worst months are September-October.
Which is cheaper, Phan Thiet or Nha Trang?
Phan Thiet, by 15-25%. Lunch for two: ~$7-8 vs ~$9-15. A 4-star hotel: from ~$30 vs ~$35. A bowl of pho: ~$1.60-2.40 vs ~$4.80-6. Over two weeks for two, that saves a couple hundred dollars.
Can you day-trip from Phan Thiet to Nha Trang?
You can, but it is slow. It is 320 km and the bus takes 6-7 hours, so a single day is out. To see both, budget at least 3-4 nights each and do one after the other: Phan Thiet first, then move on to Nha Trang.
Does Phan Thiet have an airport?
No. The nearest is Tan Son Nhat in Ho Chi Minh City, 200 km away. From there: a bus ~$4-7 (4-5 h), a train ~$16-18 (3.5 h), or a taxi ~$60-70. Nha Trang has its own international airport at Cam Ranh.
Where are the beaches better, Phan Thiet or Nha Trang?
It depends on your priorities. Phan Thiet: wide, empty, golden sand, but windy and sometimes murky. Nha Trang: an urban, tidy beach, but crowded. For solitude, Phan Thiet. For clear water and snorkelling, the Nha Trang islands (Hon Mun, Hon Tam). For kitesurfing, Phan Thiet only.
Which resort is best for a family with kids?
Nha Trang. Calm summer sea (April-August), Vinpearl with a water park, kids menus in restaurants, and clinics used to treating travellers. In Phan Thiet the sea is choppy, there is little laid on for children, and the nearest hospital is far.
