Phan Thiet & Mui Ne 2026 — the complete beach-resort guide
Sahara-style sand dunes, world-class kite spots and prices 10–20% below Nha Trang. Phan Thiet and Mui Ne are 20 km of south-east coast that get less rain than anywhere else on the shoreline — and the gateway to the whole Mui Ne region.

Phan Thiết is the capital of Bình Thuận province on the south-east coast, one of the region's headline beach destinations per Vietnam Travel. Mũi Né is the resort strip 20 km away. On a map they are two separate places; on the ground they are one holiday region strung along the South China Sea.
Why come? Dunes that genuinely look like the Sahara. World-class kitesurfing, with wind blowing 25+ days a month. And a quirk of climate: the dunes block rain clouds, so this stretch stays noticeably drier than neighbouring Nha Trang.
Skip the airport queue in 5–10 min
In winter, immigration lines run 60–90 min. With Fast Track you’re met at the aircraft and taken through the priority lane. Arrange it before you fly.

Phan Thiet weather by month
One of the driest resorts in Vietnam. Air 29–34 °C, water 23–30 °C all year. November to April is the dry season; July to October brings rain, usually short bursts of an hour or two. The dunes act as a heat shield and keep the clouds out. The most comfortable swimming months are January to April, when the sea is calmest.

Dunes, Fairy Stream and the fishing village
The White and Red Sand Dunes, the Fairy Stream (Suối Tiên) and the fishing village are all in the Mui Ne zone. Descriptions, prices and routes are in the sights section of the Mui Ne guide.
Ta Cu Mountain and the reclining Buddha
40 km south of Phan Thiet. The 49-metre reclining Buddha is the largest in Vietnam. Cable car up plus entry is about 250,000 VND (~$10).
Po Shanu Cham Towers
Three brick towers from the 7th–9th century, built by the Cham. The bricks hold without mortar — exactly how is still debated by scholars. Entry is 15,000 VND (~$0.60).
Kê Gà Lighthouse
Vietnam's tallest lighthouse — 60 m, 183 steps, built by the French in 1897. A boat to the islet costs 50,000–100,000 VND; from the top there is a coastal panorama for miles.
Tours from Phan Thiet
Most sights can be booked as a half- or full-day tour, on the spot or through GetYourGuide and Klook. A private car with driver is the easy option if there are a few of you.

Kitesurfing

Mui Ne is one of the world's top-10 kite spots. Wind blows 25+ days a month from November to April, and the water is warm year-round. Lessons with an English-speaking instructor start around $65/hour — two to three times cheaper than Europe or Egypt. Spots, schools and gear are covered in the kitesurfing section of the Mui Ne guide.
Food & seafood — where to eat

Phan Thiet is the fish-sauce capital of Vietnam — this is where much of the country's nước mắm comes from. Seafood is on the boat in the morning and on your plate by lunch. The best of it is at small Vietnamese eateries along the road, not the restaurants with a four-language menu.
- Seafood — buy it in the morning at the fish market and ask a nearby eatery to cook it for 30,000–50,000 VND (~$1.20–2)
- Bánh canh chả cá — a hot noodle soup with fish cake, a local specialty
- Bánh mì — the Vietnamese baguette (from 15,000 VND / ~$0.60)
- Phở — at local spots from 35,000 VND (~$1.40)
Shopping — what to buy and take home
Shopping in Mui Ne is modest — souvenirs and odds and ends. For a proper shop, head into Phan Thiet: Lotte Mart and Co.op Mart, with fixed prices. What to take home:
- Coffee — whole bean and ground (from 50,000 VND / ~$2 for 250 g)
- Nước mắm fish sauce — look for a Phú Hải or Phan Thiết label
- Cashew nuts — 100,000–200,000 VND (~$4–8) for 500 g
- Natural cosmetics — coconut oil, aloe
- Spices — turmeric, pepper, star anise

Practical tips and common mistakes
Visa
It depends on your passport. Many nationalities — most EU countries, the UK and others under Vietnam's waiver scheme — get up to 45 days visa-free. Everyone else applies online for a 90-day e-visa at evisa.gov.vn. Your passport must be valid for at least six more months.
Connectivity
A Viettel or Mobifone SIM costs from 100,000 VND (~$4) for 30–60 GB. Buy it at an official operator shop with your passport, or set up an eSIM (Airalo, Holafly) before you fly. Wi-Fi is in every hotel.
Money
The currency is the Vietnamese dong (VND). Cards work at resorts and bigger restaurants, but the dunes, markets and small eateries are cash-only — carry notes. The best exchange rates are at gold shops in Phan Thiet, not the airport. ATMs charge a 50,000–60,000 VND fee per withdrawal, so take out larger amounts at once.
Safety
The resort is calm. Watch for pickpockets in crowds, chaotic traffic, the sun (SPF 50+ is a must) and jellyfish from May to October.
Common mistakes
- Travelling without insurance. A broken bone at a private clinic starts around $1,000; two weeks of cover costs $15–30
- Changing money at the airport. Worst rate there — Phan Thiet's gold shops give 3–5% more
- Renting a motorbike with no experience. Traffic is chaotic and the rules are loose. If in doubt, take Grab or a taxi
- Not bargaining. The opening price at a market is inflated by 50–200%
- Hitting the dunes at noon. The sand heats to 50+ °C — go at sunrise or sunset only
- Drinking tap water. Bottled only — 5,000–10,000 VND for 1.5 litres
- Forgetting sunscreen. The UV index runs 8–11; you burn in half an hour
