Vietnam in September 2026: weather, resorts and prices
September is Vietnam's trickiest month. The south is still under the monsoon, the central coast opens its rainy season and its first typhoons, and the north shakes off the summer heat. The upside: prices hit their yearly floor, with 4–5-star rooms going 30–50% cheaper. Mui Ne stays dry, and Nha Trang holds up better than the rest of the centre. Below: weather by resort, typhoon risk, prices and where to go.

The country stretches 1,650 km from north to south, so on the same day Nha Trang can hit 33 °C with a quick downpour while Da Nang gets three straight days of rain. September opens the typhoon season. The central coast from Da Nang to Hue falls in the risk zone. Nha Trang sits south of the main typhoon corridor and is hit less often. Below is the full picture: weather by resort, typhoon risk, prices and where to go.

Weather by region
South (Ho Chi Minh City, Phu Quoc, Mui Ne, Phan Thiet, Vung Tau, Con Dao) — the monsoon is easing but still present. Ho Chi Minh City: 30–33 °C, 18–22 rainy days, showers shorter and less frequent than in July–August. Phu Quoc is still not for the beach: waves and rain. Mui Ne is the oasis — 60–100 mm of rain, wind for kitesurfing, swimming is fine.
Centre (Nha Trang, Da Nang, Hoi An, Hue) — the rainy season begins. Da Nang and Hoi An flip fast: 200–350 mm of rain, 14–18 rainy days. Hue is worse still — 300–450 mm, the wettest city. Nha Trang holds up better: 80–150 mm and 8–12 rainy days. More than summer, but bearable. Swimming is possible, though the surf picks up.
North (Hanoi, Ha Long, Ninh Binh) — the heat drops, which is a relief. Hanoi: 29–33 °C (down from 35–37 °C in summer). Fewer rainy days: 12–15. Ha Long: water 27–28 °C, cruises run, but typhoons are a risk. Ninh Binh: the rice fields turn golden, great for photos.
Highlands (Da Lat, Sapa) — wet. Da Lat: 21–25 °C. Sapa in late September gives you golden rice terraces just before the harvest — one of the most photogenic moments of the year. The trails are muddy.
Typhoons — September's main risk
September opens the typhoon season (September–November). The main strike zone is the central coast from Hue to Quy Nhon, plus the north. Statistically there are 1–3 typhoons across the autumn season, and September usually brings the first.
What that means in practice:
- Da Nang, Hoi An, Hue — high risk. Airports can close and coastal hotels can be evacuated
- Nha Trang — medium risk. It sits south of the main corridor, so typhoons reach it less often. Heavy rain, yes; a direct hit, rarely
- Mui Ne, Phu Quoc, Ho Chi Minh City — low typhoon risk. The south is barely touched
- Hanoi, Ha Long — medium to high risk. Cruises may be cancelled
Early vs late September — is there a difference?
A real one. Early September still feels like August: heat, monsoon in the south, but typhoons are unlikely. By the end the heat drops 2–3 °C while the typhoon risk climbs. In the north it turns noticeably fresher late in the month: 27–29 °C.
For Nha Trang: early September is drier (80–100 mm), late September wetter (120–150 mm).
For Sapa: late September is the peak of the golden terraces before the rice harvest (usually the first week of October).
💬 "September is when the deals appear — hotels drop by a third or more and half-empty resorts almost negotiate with you; the rain is just an excuse to take it slow." — Tripadvisor Vietnam forum, 2025
Can you swim in Vietnam in September?

The sea is still warm: 27–29 °C. The problem isn't the temperature — it's the waves and the murky water. Storms grow more frequent on the central coast, while the south gets monsoon swell.
| Resort | Water temp | Waves | Swimming |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nha Trang | 27–28 °C | Moderate | OK (depends on the day) |
| Mui Ne | 27–28 °C | Moderate to strong | For kitesurfers |
| Da Nang | 27–29 °C | Strong | Not recommended |
| Hoi An | 27–29 °C | Strong | Not recommended |
| Ha Long | 27–28 °C | Moderate | Limited |
| Phu Quoc | 27–28 °C | Strong | Not recommended |
| Vung Tau | 27–28 °C | Moderate | Limited |
In Nha Trang swimming is possible but day-dependent: some days bring storms and red flags. Mui Ne is for kitesurfers, not swimmers. Da Nang and Hoi An aren't beach material in September.
Skip the airport queue in 5–10 min
In winter, immigration lines run 60–90 min. With Fast Track you’re met at the aircraft and taken through the priority lane. Arrange it before you fly.
Telegram managerWhere to go in September — resort comparison
September is the most limited month for choice. There are two reliable options: Mui Ne (beach plus kitesurfing) and Nha Trang (with caveats).
| Resort | Best for | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mui Ne / Phan Thiet | Kitesurfing, budget | Little rain, wind, lowest prices | Waves for swimming, few day trips |
| Nha Trang | Beach (with caveats) | Cheaper than ever; warm | 8–12 rainy days, possible storms |
| Da Lat | Mountains, cool air | 21–25 °C | Rain most days |
| Hanoi | Sightseeing | Heat drops, easier going | Rain, typhoon risk |
| Da Nang / Hoi An | Not recommended | — | Typhoons, downpours, closed beaches |
| Phu Quoc | Not recommended | — | Monsoon |
| Ha Long | Risky | Warm water | Storms, cruise cancellations |
Mui Ne leads September. The kite schools run at full tilt, and beach time works with an allowance for waves. Prices are the lowest of the year.
Nha Trang is for those ready to gamble on the rain. Diving is limited in September (visibility drops as the water clouds), but beach days between showers are fine. Nha Trang prices are at a record low.
Sapa is for photographers: the golden rice terraces in late September are a sight worth getting muddy on the trails for.

Common mistakes on a September trip
Picking Da Nang or Hoi An. September opens the typhoon season on the central coast: 200–350 mm of rain, closed beaches and possible flooding in Hoi An. Choose Nha Trang or Mui Ne instead.
Skipping insurance that covers natural disasters. A standard travel policy may not cover typhoon losses — a cancelled flight, an evacuation, damaged luggage. Check the terms.
Booking without free cancellation. A typhoon can flip your plans in 3–5 days. Hotels and flights with free cancellation are a must in September.
Going to Phu Quoc. Still monsoon. The discounts are tempting, but the reality is rain 20 days out of 30 and closed beaches.
Ignoring the forecast. In September the forecast isn't a suggestion, it's a plan. Check it 5–7 days before you fly and 1–2 days before every excursion.

One of the wettest months. The south sits at 30–33 °C with the monsoon easing off (18–22 rainy days). The central coast enters its rainy season — Da Nang 200–350 mm, Nha Trang 80–150 mm. The north runs 29–33 °C with 12–15 rainy days. The highlands are 20–25 °C and wet. The heat fades compared with summer.
Can you swim in Vietnam in September?
With caveats. Nha Trang is doable (water 27–28 °C) but has stormy days. Mui Ne is for kitesurfers. Da Nang and Hoi An beaches are often closed by waves. Phu Quoc is not recommended. September is not the month for a classic beach holiday.
Are there typhoons in Vietnam in September?
Yes — September opens the typhoon season (peak is October–November). The strike zone is the central coast (Da Nang, Hue, Hoi An) and the north (Ha Long). Nha Trang is hit less often. The south (Mui Ne, Ho Chi Minh City, Phu Quoc) is barely affected. Insurance covering natural disasters is essential.
Where is the best place to go in Vietnam in September?
Mui Ne is the best bet (little rain, kitesurfing, budget). Nha Trang works with caveats (8–12 rainy days, but warm in between). Da Lat is good for a cool-mountain break. Sapa gives the golden terraces in late September. Avoid Da Nang, Hoi An, Phu Quoc and Ha Long.
How much does a Vietnam trip cost in September?
The cheapest month of the year. A 3-star hotel from about ~$10–20 a night; 4–5 stars run 30–50% below their winter rate. Street meals are ~$1.20–2.40. September is the best month for budget travel in Vietnam.
Do I need a visa for Vietnam?
It depends on your passport. Citizens of the UK, most of the EU and several other countries get a short visa exemption (often 45 days); everyone else can apply online for an e-visa valid up to 90 days at evisa.gov.vn for about $25. Your passport should be valid 6+ months. Check current rules for your nationality before booking.
