Vietnam in October 2026: weather, where to go and what it costs
October flips Vietnam's usual logic. In the south the monsoon fades; in the north the best season of the year arrives — 25–30 °C, clear skies, hardly any rain. The central coast, meanwhile, hits peak typhoon season. Below: the full picture by region, storm risk, water temperatures and where to actually go.

October rewrites the map you may have arrived with. If summer sent everyone to the central coast, now it is the south or the north that shine. Phu Quoc wakes up after the monsoon, Hanoi steps out of the summer heat, and Ha Long finally becomes a place you want to cruise.

Region by region
South (Ho Chi Minh City, Phu Quoc, Mui Ne, Phan Thiet, Vung Tau, Con Dao) — a transition month. The monsoon is fading: early October still brings 16–20 rainy days, dropping to 10–14 by the end. Ho Chi Minh City runs 30–33 °C with humidity easing. Phu Quoc wakes up — by the second half of the month the sea calms and the beaches reopen. Mui Ne sees rain climb to 80–120 mm, but it stays manageable.
Centre (Nha Trang, Da Nang, Hoi An, Hue) — the worst month. Da Nang gets 400–600 mm of rain, and flooding in Hoi An's old town is a real possibility. Hue sees 500–700 mm — its wettest of the year. Nha Trang, at 200–350 mm, is better than Da Nang but still rainy and stormy.
North (Hanoi, Ha Long, Ninh Binh) — the best season of the year. Hanoi in October is superb: 25–30 °C, humidity 70–75%, only 8–12 short showers all month. Ha Long sits at 25–29 °C, water 25–26 °C — cruises run reliably.
Highlands (Dalat, Sapa) — autumn proper. Dalat is 20–24 °C with rain easing toward month-end. Sapa is 18–23 °C; the rice has been harvested and the terraces slowly empty.
Typhoons in October
October is the peak of typhoon season, and the central coast is the main target.
- Da Nang, Hoi An, Hue — highest risk. A typhoon can bring 100+ km/h winds, flooding and power cuts
- Nha Trang — moderate risk. Typhoons reach it, but less often and weaker
- South (Mui Ne, Ho Chi Minh City, Phu Quoc) — minimal typhoon risk
- North (Hanoi, Ha Long) — possible, but rarer in October than in September
Early vs late October — does it matter?
South: early October is still monsoon (16–20 rainy days); late October shifts toward the dry season (10–14). On Phu Quoc, by about the 20th the sea settles and the beaches open.
Centre: wet all month, but the second half is usually worse — the strongest typhoons tend to land in late October and early November.
North: reliably good all month. Toward the end it turns a touch cooler (23–27 °C), and the morning mist over Ha Long makes for great photos.
💬 "October is the ideal month for Hanoi and the north — warm days, cool evenings, low humidity and clear skies before the winter chill sets in." — Lonely Planet, 2025
Can you swim in Vietnam in October?

The water stays warm: 25–28 °C. But whether you can actually swim depends heavily on the region. The central coast is stormy; the south improves through the second half of the month.
| Resort | Water temp | Waves | Swimming |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mui Ne | 27–28 °C | Moderate | Fine |
| Phu Quoc (late) | 27–28 °C | Easing | Improving |
| Vung Tau | 27–28 °C | Moderate | Limited |
| Con Dao | 27–28 °C | Moderate | Improving |
| Nha Trang | 26–27 °C | Strong | Limited (storms) |
| Da Nang | 25–27 °C | Strong | Not recommended |
| Hoi An | 25–27 °C | Strong | Not recommended |
| Ha Long | 25–26 °C | Light–moderate | Cool |
For actual beach swimming in October, go south — Mui Ne, and Phu Quoc from the second half of the month. Write off the central coast until December. Ha Long is for cruising, not swimming.

Message the managerWhere to go in October — resorts compared

| Resort | Best for | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hanoi + Ha Long | Sightseeing, cruises | Best weather of the year, comfortable temps | Not for the beach |
| Mui Ne | Beach, kitesurfing | Warm, sea, budget | More rain than in summer |
| Phu Quoc (late) | Beach (late in the month) | Waking up after the monsoon | First half still wet |
| Dalat | Hills, cool air | 20–24 °C, scenic | Rain |
| Ho Chi Minh City | City, shopping | Sightseeing, Mekong Delta | Rain, but easing |
| Nha Trang | Limited | — | Rain, storms, typhoon risk |
| Da Nang / Hoi An | Not recommended | — | Typhoons, flooding |
Hanoi + Ha Long is October's top pick. Hanoi: the Old Quarter, Hoàn Kiếm lake, street food — all at a comfortable 25–30 °C. Ha Long: a one- or two-day cruise (from 3,000,000 VND / ~$120) with mist in the morning and clear skies by day.
Mui Ne is for combining beach and budget. The wind eases compared with summer, so kitesurfing is still possible, though conditions are less consistent.
Phu Quoc — the second half of October only. By around the 20th the sea calms and the Bãi Sao and Bãi Dài beaches reopen. It is a gamble, but if the weather cooperates you get Phu Quoc without the crowds and at low-season prices.
Ninh Binh is October's gem — the "Ha Long on land," with rice fields, karst mountains and boat trips. Weather 26–30 °C and dry.

Common mistakes on an October trip
Going to Da Nang or Hoi An. October is the peak of the rain-and-typhoon season on the central coast. Da Nang gets 400–600 mm of rain, Hoi An floods, and typhoons can close the airport.
Treating Nha Trang as a summer beach. In October Nha Trang is not the place it was in summer: 200–350 mm of rain, stormy days and a real typhoon risk.
Forgetting warm clothes for the north. A Hanoi evening at 20–23 °C feels chilly after tropical heat, and Sapa drops to 12–16 °C at night — without a warm layer you will feel it.
Not using the change of seasons. October is perfect for a combined route: Hanoi + Ha Long for sightseeing, then a flight south to Phu Quoc or Mui Ne for the beach.
FAQ
What's the weather like in Vietnam in October?
It depends entirely on the region. The south sits at 30–33 °C with the monsoon easing (16–20 rainy days early on, dropping to 10–14 by month-end). The central coast hits the peak of the wet season — Da Nang 400–600 mm, Hue 500–700 mm, plus typhoons. The north is at its best: 25–30 °C, 8–12 rainy days.
Can you swim in Vietnam in October?
In the south, yes — Mui Ne, and Phu Quoc from the second half of the month. The water is 27–28 °C. On the central coast, no (storms). In Ha Long the water is 25–26 °C, cool for a long swim.
Are there typhoons in Vietnam in October?
Yes — October is the peak of typhoon season for the central coast (Da Nang, Hue, Hoi An, and partly Nha Trang). The south is barely affected; the north rarely. Travel insurance with natural-disaster cover is essential.
Where is the best place to go in Vietnam in October?
For sightseeing, Hanoi + Ha Long (the single best month). For a beach, Mui Ne or Phu Quoc (second half). For the hills, Dalat or Sapa. Avoid Da Nang, Hoi An and Hue (typhoons).
How much does a trip to Vietnam cost in October?
It is the low season. A 3-star hotel starts around 250,000 VND (~$10) a night, a hostel bed from 120,000 VND (~$5). October is the last month of low prices before they climb in November and December.
Do I need a visa for Vietnam?
It depends on your passport. Many nationalities (most EU countries, UK, and others) get 45 days visa-free; US, Australian and Canadian travellers usually need an e-visa. The e-visa costs $25, is valid up to 90 days and is issued online at evisa.gov.vn. Your passport must be valid 6+ months.
