Cam Ranh (Vietnam): the complete 2026 guide

Cam Ranh isn't a resort town with promenades and night markets. It's a dozen-plus five-star resorts strung along one of Vietnam's best beaches, with fishing villages just behind the fence. This is where flights to the Nha Trang region land — white sand, warm sea, and quiet.

Long sandy Bãi Dài beach in Cam Ranh — gentle waves, pale sand and a shallow entry into the sea
Bãi Dài beach (Cam Ranh, Khanh Hoa province) — fine pale sand and a gentle, shallow entry

Khanh Hoa province, about 35 km south of Nha Trang. The city sits on Cam Ranh Bay — one of the world's three finest deep-water harbours, as Vietnam's official travel portal notes. It has 130,000 residents, but tourists only ever see the resort strip on the peninsula.

There is one format here: all-inclusive inside a resort. Beyond the gate you get fishing villages and empty roads. Families with small kids, couples who want quiet, and anyone who wants to lie on a beach without making decisions — that is who Cam Ranh is for.

Foreign arrivals to Khanh Hoa have climbed sharply since the airport's international terminal expanded, and the reason is simple: fresh all-inclusive resorts, the clean Bãi Dài beach, and an airport ten minutes from your lounger.

💬 "The water here is often calmer than in Nha Trang, and the sand is finer and whiter than on many stretches of Phu Quoc" — traveller reports on Tripadvisor, 2025

The key difference from other Vietnamese beach spots: there is no town around you. You live inside the resort. No street food round the corner. No markets within walking distance. No bars on a promenade. Want life outside the hotel? Cam Ranh isn't it. Want a beach, a pool and a spa with zero thinking? Few places do it better.

Where Cam Ranh is — map and location

Vietnam's south-central coast, on the South China Sea. Coordinates: 11°57′N, 109°09′E. Not the deep south like Ho Chi Minh City or Phu Quoc, and not the north like Hanoi — it's the middle of the coast, leaning south.

The bay is an enclosed body of water covering 60 km², with an average depth of 16–18 metres. Mountains block the wind and the swell, so the sea is calmer here than on the open stretches of coast.

  • Bãi Dài Beach (Bãi Dài): White coral sand | 15 km — Shallow entry | Families & couples
  • Cam Ranh Airport (Cam Ranh (CXR)): International airport — 35 km to Nha Trang
  • Cam Ranh City (Cam Ranh City): City centre | Markets, cafés — Local life, few tourists
  • Bình Lập Peninsula (Bình Lập): Quiet beaches and coves — Off-grid | Little infrastructure
🤓
Did you know? Cam Ranh Bay is ranked alongside the harbours of Sydney and San Francisco. In 1905 a Russian fleet anchored here before the Battle of Tsushima, and later it became one of the largest foreign naval bases in the region.

Areas of Cam Ranh — where to stay

The Bãi Dài resort strip — pools lined up along the shore of Cam Ranh Bay

The Bãi Dài resort strip (Long Beach)

This is the reason 90% of visitors fly to Cam Ranh at all. A peninsula with a chain of five-star resorts along a beach that runs for kilometres. Some 250 hectares are zoned for tourism: Movenpick, Amiana, Riviera, Swandor, Selectum, Radisson Blu, Duyen Ha, Aquamarine, Melia Vinpearl.

Pros: clean beach, quiet, all-inclusive, 10 minutes from the airport, newer hotels.
Cons: nothing outside the gate. No shops, no cafés, no nightlife.
Best for: families with kids, couples on a honeymoon.

Cam Ranh city centre

An ordinary Vietnamese town of 130,000. The main street, Hùng Vương, runs along the shore with markets, shops, pharmacies and cafés. A guesthouse runs 300,000–500,000 VND a night (~$12–20). Lunch from 20,000 VND (~$0.80).

Pros: cheap, authentic, fresh seafood at the market.
Cons: not a tourist place, a real language barrier, beaches with no facilities.
Best for: budget travellers, digital nomads.

Bình Ba and Bình Hưng islands

Coral reefs, white sand, clear water. But since 2015 the government has barred tourists from these islands — there is a naval base nearby, and foreigners are not allowed access.

⚠️
Heads-up: some operators still advertise trips to Bình Ba. You risk trouble with the police. Go for a snorkelling trip to other islands in the bay instead.

Getting to Cam Ranh

Cam Ranh airport (CXR) — the gateway to both Nha Trang and the Cam Ranh resorts

Cam Ranh Airport (CXR)

CXR is the gateway to the Nha Trang and Cam Ranh resorts — despite the "Nha Trang" label on your ticket, this is the airport you actually fly into. The international terminal opened in 2018: fresh and air-conditioned, handling around 8 million passengers a year. Most travellers connect through Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi or a regional hub, then take a short domestic hop.

💡
Tip:don't change all your cash at the airport — the rate is 2–3% worse than in town. Change ~$50–100 for the taxi and first odds and ends, then use a bank ATM in Nha Trang. Cards work in resorts, but street vendors and small cafés are cash-only.

Getting around Cam Ranh

Grab is the main way to move around — it's reliable in the resort zone and at the airport, the price is fixed in the app, and you skip the haggling. Renting a scooter costs 100,000–150,000 VND/day (~$4–6), but you need an International Driving Permit: without one, the fine starts at 1 million VND and your travel insurance won't cover a crash.

⚠️
Important: unofficial taxis at the airport quote 3–5× the fair price. Use Grab, or insist on the meter (nhấn đồng hồ).
High season

Skip the airport queue in 5–10 min

In winter, immigration lines run 60–90 min. With Fast Track you’re met at the aircraft and taken through the priority lane. Arrange it before you fly.

Cam Ranh beaches

The shore near Cam Ranh airport — palms and resort piers on the edge of the bay

Bãi Dài Beach (Long Beach) — the main beach

A ribbon of fine pale sand runs for kilometres. The water is clear — you can see the bottom at 2–3 metres. The entry is gentle: a child can wade 30 metres and still stand knee-deep, and waves in the bay are almost non-existent.

  • Sand: fine, pale, nearly white
  • Length: over 10 km
  • Entry: free
  • Waves: minimal (the bay is sheltered by mountains)
  • Jellyfish: rare, mostly in the rainy season (July–September)

What the sea is like in Cam Ranh

It's the South China Sea — Vietnamese call it the East Sea (Biển Đông). Water runs from about 24 °C in January to 30 °C in May–June. Mountains close off the bay, so there are almost no waves. Bãi Dài consistently lands on lists of Vietnam's best beaches.

Cam Ranh weather by month — when to go

A close-up sea wave lit by the sun
The water off Cam Ranh — from about 24 °C in winter to 30 °C in summer

Air sits at 27–34 °C and the water at 24–30 °C year-round. Dry season: January–April. Wet season: July–October. The rain tends to fall in the evening, with sunshine most of the day. In short: come January–April for the driest, most comfortable weather, and steer clear of the second half of November, which brings the year's heaviest rain and wind.

Things to do and see

Cam Ranh isn't about sights. People come for the beach. But if a week on a sun lounger starts to drag, there are options within reach.

Nature

Núi Chúa National Park — rainforest, waterfalls, wild beaches. Tucked inside is Hang Rai beach, which regularly makes lists of the coast's prettiest.

Vĩnh Hy Bay — a calm cove ringed by mountains, about 40 km from Cam Ranh. Turquoise water, cliffs, quiet. Photographers come for the early light over the water.

Culture

Từ Vân Pagoda — a temple built from seashells and coral. It looks like nothing else in Vietnam. Free entry, 15 minutes from the resort strip by scooter.

Nhà thờ Bãi Ngọi church — a blue Catholic church from the colonial era. Great shots at sunset.

Food in Cam Ranh — where and what to eat

Tiger prawns pan-fried with garlic and herbs
Prawns, lobster, squid — landed in the bay in the morning, on your table by evening

Inside the hotel it's an international buffet. Beyond the gate it's Vietnamese food and seafood. A European restaurant outside the resort? Forget it.

What to try

Seafood — lobster, tiger prawns, squid, oysters, crab. Walk into a restaurant, point at the tank, and 20 minutes later it's on your plate. Prices run 150,000–460,000 VND/kg (~$6–18).

Peanut worms (sá sùng) — a local delicacy. They look alarming but taste like crunchy chips with a hint of the sea. Worth trying once.

Phở — the classic Vietnamese rice-noodle soup, 30,000–50,000 VND (~$1.20–2). Bánh mì — the Vietnamese baguette sandwich, 15,000–25,000 VND (~$0.60–1). Vietnamese iced coffee (cà phê sữa đá) — 15,000–30,000 VND (~$0.60–1.20).

🎯
How to order seafood:walk up to the tanks, point at a lobster or the prawns, say "grill" or "steam" and indicate the weight. It's ready in 15–20 minutes.

Fruit

At the market in central Cam Ranh: mango (~$0.40–0.80/kg), mangosteen (~$0.60–1/kg), durian (~$1.60–3/kg), rambutan (~$0.30–0.60/kg), dragon fruit (~$0.20–0.40/kg).

💡
Buy fruit at the town market, not at the hotel — the difference is 3–5×. And note: durian is banned from hotels and planes because of the smell.

Shopping

Cam Ranh isn't a shopping destination. There are no malls. But you can cover the basics.

In the town centre: Maximark is the main supermarket. Coopmart, a Vietnamese chain, is a touch cheaper. The markets have fruit, spices, coffee and seafood.

In short: Cam Ranh is beach and all-inclusive. Nha Trang is restaurants, night markets, bars and city rhythm. Would three days on a lounger bore you? Choose Nha Trang. Want to switch your brain off for a week? Cam Ranh. The compromise: 5 nights in Cam Ranh + 2 in Nha Trang.

Practical info

Time zone

UTC+7, all year (Vietnam doesn't use daylight saving). Worth checking against home before you book late-night calls.

SIM and internet

Grab a SIM right at the airport, or set up an eSIM before you fly. Viettel has the best coverage in the country: 5 GB/day for 150,000–200,000 VND (~$6–8). You'll need your passport to register a physical SIM.

Money and ATMs

The currency is the Vietnamese dong (VND). There are barely any ATMs in the resort zone — withdraw cash at the airport. Cards (Visa/Mastercard) work in resorts and larger restaurants, but markets, small cafés and taxis are cash-only.

Health and insurance

⚠️
Travel insurance is essential. The nearest large hospital is in Nha Trang (~35 km). Without a policy: a doctor's consultation from $50, hospitalisation from $200/day. A policy with $30,000+ of medical cover costs very little relative to that — sort it before you fly.

Safety

Cam Ranh is safe even by Vietnamese standards. The real risks: sunburn (SPF 50+ from day one), petty theft on the beach, and inflated fares in unofficial taxis. Use Grab and you sidestep the last one.

Visas by nationality

Whether you need a visa depends on your passport. Many nationalities get a visa exemption of up to 45 days; others apply for the e-visa (US$25, 90 days) online at the official portal evisa.gov.vn before flying. English is spoken at the front desk of the big resorts, and most run kids' clubs and international buffets.

History of Cam Ranh — from military base to resort

Over 150 years, the fleets of several great powers have passed through Cam Ranh Bay.

  • 1905 — a Russian squadron anchored here before the Battle of Tsushima
  • 1960s — a major U.S. logistics base during the Vietnam War
  • 1979–2002 — a large Soviet, then Russian, naval base, covering about 100 km²
  • 2004 — the military infrastructure was converted into a civilian airport
  • 2007 — a plan was approved to develop the 250-hectare resort zone

The runway the Americans built in the 1960s now receives holiday flights. And the quays where Soviet ships once moored have become piers for tour boats.

FAQ

Is Cam Ranh in the south or the north of Vietnam?

The south-central coast, leaning south. Want to combine it with another city? Da Lat is 3.5 hours by car, and Nha Trang is 40 minutes up the road.

When is the best time to visit Cam Ranh?

March and early April are ideal: dry, around 29 °C, and hotels haven't yet raised rates for the peak. January–February is high season — book 2–3 months ahead. The worst window is the second half of November: rain and wind.

Is it safe to swim with kids?

In the dry season, yes. Resort beaches have lifeguards; the wild stretches don't. Jellyfish are rare (July–September), but bring vinegar just in case — it neutralises a sting. The wet season can bring waves and rip currents. A red flag on the beach means stay out of the water.

How much spending money should I bring?

On all-inclusive, the main extras are a day trip (~$20–37), a round-trip taxi to Nha Trang (~$26), a massage (~$11–30) and fruit at the market (~$5). Figure ~$200–300 for two over a week. Change money in Nha Trang rather than at the airport and you gain 3–5%.

Do I need a visa?

It depends on your passport — check evisa.gov.vn. Many nationalities get a visa exemption of up to 45 days; count it from the day of the entry stamp. Staying longer? Apply for the e-visa (US$25, 90 days). Your passport should be valid at least 6 months beyond entry.

Is there any nightlife?

In Cam Ranh, no. Hotel bars close by 22:00–23:00. Want evenings out? Add two nights in Nha Trang (40 minutes by taxi, ~$14) — a promenade, restaurants, and bars like Sailing Club and Skylight running until 02:00.

What to know before you go — a checklist

  1. Cam Ranh isn't a resort town. All the life is inside the hotel. Want infrastructure? Choose Nha Trang.
  2. Cash. There are few ATMs in the resort zone. Withdraw money at the airport.
  3. Transfer. Book ahead. There's no public transport at night.
  4. SPF 50+. You can burn in half an hour, even on a cloudy day.
  5. Scooter only with a licence. The fine starts at 1 million VND, and insurance won't cover a crash without an IDP.
  6. Insurance. Don't skimp — the nearest big hospital is 35 km away.
  7. Passport. Valid at least 6 months beyond your entry date — check early.
  8. Grab. Install it before the trip. It's the main taxi app.
  9. Offline map. Download one. Signal is patchy on the wild beaches.
  10. No trips on day one. Give your body a day to adjust to the heat and humidity.
Prices and details current as of July 2026. Rates and conditions change — check the official hotel and airline sites before you travel.
