Day trips from Doc Let: islands, VinWonders, waterfalls
There is no tour desk at Doc Let. Not one, along six kilometres of beach and four resorts. Ask at reception and someone will phone a driver they know, who will take you to Nha Trang, where you will be put on a group bus. Everything sold here as a tour from Doc Let is a trip to Nha Trang with an activity attached. Here is the arithmetic of doing that well, in dollars, with the transfer counted in.
Doc Let is a quiet beach 50 km north of the city, not a resort town: hundreds of visitors, not thousands, and no market for a tour industry. But every Nha Trang trip is reachable in a day, if you do the sums first. How the logistics actually work is in our Doc Let transport guide.
What is within reach
Five kinds of day out are available: the Nha Trang island boat tour, the VinWonders park with its cable car, nearby nature (Ba Ho waterfall and the mud baths), a cultural day around the Po Nagar towers, and the long hauls to Da Lat or the white dunes. All of them start in Nha Trang, which means adding a 600,000–800,000 VND (~$24–32) taxi in each direction to every price you are quoted.

In practice: a group day trip from Doc Let rarely lands under 1,500,000 VND (~$60) per person, and a private car with a driver starts at 3,000,000 VND (~$120) for two. Not expensive by European standards, but noticeably more than the same tour bought by someone staying in Nha Trang.

Getting to Nha Trang and back
Nothing works without this leg, so start here. Three options, each right in its own situation.
Grab and Xanh SM
Open the app, order a car. Fifty kilometres, an hour and ten to an hour and twenty. 600,000–800,000 VND (~$24–32) by day; after 22:00 add 20 to 30%, and expect refusals, because drivers do not like returning empty.
App coverage at Doc Let is patchy and a car may take fifteen to twenty minutes to reach you from Ninh Hoa. If you have a fixed departure time for a tour, book a driver through reception the night before instead.
A driver for the day
Three activities or more and a car with a driver wins: 2,000,000–2,800,000 VND (~$80–112) for eight to ten hours, waiting between stops. It is the right answer for a cultural day, for Ba Ho plus mud baths, or for an airport run with a detour. Book through your resort, which adds 15 to 20%, or find one on the ground. Agree the route and the price before you set off and pay cash at the end.

Bus
No bus leaves Doc Let itself. You take a xe om out to QL1 (50,000–100,000 VND) and flag a passing Phương Trang or Hoàng Long coach into Nha Trang: an hour, 50,000 VND (~$2).
Cheap and genuinely slow. Timetables drift, the air conditioning is a rumour, and a ticket on a through service may not come with a seat. Good for a solo traveller with a day to spare, bad for a family with a schedule.

The four-island boat tour
Nha Trang's signature trip, and the one most Doc Let visitors end up on. Boats leave Cảng Cầu Đá at 08:00 and work round Hòn Mun, Hòn Một, Hòn Tằm and Hòn Miễu, back in port about 16:30.
Included: the boat, lunch aboard, a guide, basic snorkelling gear, and transfer from your Nha Trang pick-up. Nha Trang, not Doc Let. Not included: the Hon Tam beach fee (100,000 VND), the Trí Nguyên aquarium on Hòn Miễu (90,000 VND), and anything you drink at the floating bar.

About the coral, honestly
Hon Mun is a 160 km² marine protected area and Nha Trang's headline dive site. Ten years ago live coral cover ran 45 to 50%. After the 2024 bleaching it sits nearer 25 to 30%.
Parts of the reserve have been closed to let the reef recover, and the Nha Trang Bay Management Board keeps adding temporary protection zones. In 2026 one covered Hòn Chồng to Đặng Tất from May to the end of August. Where snorkelling is allowed it is mask-only, and the boats park everyone in the same small bay. What you will see is sand, coral skeletons and sergeant-majors that have learned about bread.

Go for the boat day, the lunch at sea, the daft floating bar and the beach on Hon Tam. Do not go expecting Raja Ampat.
When not to go
December to February the sea gets up, and a metre and a half is common. On those days the boats stay at Hon Tam and skip Hon Mun entirely, and nobody refunds anything. You get two beaches instead of four islands, a show on a pitching bar, and a lunch half the passengers leave.
VinWonders in a day
VinWonders Nha Trang occupies Hòn Tre, the island facing the seafront: water slides, roller coasters, an aquarium, a 4D cinema, a fountain show at 19:00. In high season the operator counts up to 15,000 visitors a day.
You can do it from Doc Let in one day. It is a twelve-hour day.
- 06:30 leave Doc Let in a car booked the night before through reception.
- 08:00 arrive at the cable car station on Trần Phú.
- 09:00 the crossing: twelve minutes, 3,320 metres over open water.
- 09:30–19:00 the park.
- 19:00 fountain show on the main square.
- 20:00 cable car down, back at Doc Let around 22:00.
The cable car is the only way in for day visitors, because the Vinpearl sea taxis carry resort guests only. It is included in the ticket.

That last row is the one to remember. If you are already losing an hour each way, an evening ticket buys you the fountain show and the lit-up park for half the money. For two adults with transfers, a full day comes to about 3,300,000 VND (~$132).
With children
A whole day here with a four to seven-year-old does not end well. Arrive at 11:00, leave at 16:00, skip the fountains, get home before midnight and without tears. From eight upwards a full day is realistic.

Bring a change of clothes for the water park (lockers cost 50,000 VND), cash for the food court (200,000–300,000 VND a dish) and sunscreen, since most of the park is open to the sky. Or stay the night
If your dates allow, one night on Hòn Tre is the better version. Vinpearl Resort sells hotel-plus-two-days-in-the-park packages from about 5,500,000 VND (~$220) per person. With transfers and food it costs more than the day trip and removes the twelve-hour march.

On your doorstep: Ba Ho and the mud baths
Not everything is an hour away. Ba Ho waterfall is 22 km from Doc Let, and the mud-bath complexes sit just outside Nha Trang. Both work as an evening after the beach or as a rainy-day plan.
Ba Ho waterfall
Suối Ba Hồ is a three-tier stream in the hills of Khanh Hoa, and the closest real piece of nature to Doc Let: 22 km south on QL1 to Ninh Ích commune, then three kilometres of dirt track to the car park.

Self-guided: a rented scooter from Doc Let (150,000–200,000 VND a day), half an hour of riding, 10,000 VND to park. Guided from Nha Trang: 500,000–700,000 VND (~$20–28) per person in a group. In the dry season, March to July, the falls shrink to a trickle and the third pool is a dry stone bath.
Mud baths
Hot mineral springs mixed with clay: fifteen or twenty minutes in a warm tub of the stuff, a rinse, then a hot pool, a mineral shower and sometimes a sauna. Locally it is what you do after a day in the sea.

Take them in the second half of a day you were spending in Nha Trang anyway. On their own they do not justify a $48 taxi; combined with the Cham towers or an afternoon on Tran Phu beach, they make a proper day. All four are compared in our Nha Trang mud baths guide.
Mui Du and the salt flats, no car needed
Two things sit within reach of the beach itself. The Mũi Du headland at the northern end is fifteen minutes from Paradise Resort: bare rock into the sea, deeper water and better snorkelling than in front of the hotels.
The Đồng muối Hòn Khói salt fields are 7 km north, 400 hectares of white pans, best at sunrise between January and July. Free, no gate, but you need a scooter or a taxi. What else is walkable from the sand is in our Doc Let beach guide.
A cultural day in Nha Trang
The cultural circuit is compact and closes in four or five hours: the Po Nagar Cham towers, Long Son Pagoda with its white Buddha, and the cathedral. Add Chợ Đầm market for lunch and the Trần Phú seafront before the drive home.

Po Nagar
Tháp Bà Ponagar is Nha Trang's principal monument: four brick Cham towers from the 8th century on a bluff above the Cai river. Entry 30,000 VND (~$1.20), open 07:30 to 17:30. There is a Cham dance display on site, short and decent. Come early, before the coaches.
Long Son and the white Buddha
Chùa Long Sơn is a working Buddhist pagoda in the middle of the city, and the reason to go is the 24-metre seated Buddha on the hill above it. A hundred and fifty-two steps up, the whole of Nha Trang below. Free, and a donation is welcome.
Drop the mud bath and this becomes a gentle six-hour outing with lunch. Keep everything and it is twelve hours, home at nine. With small children, cut it to the Buddha, the market and the beach: the towers and the cathedral have nothing for a five-year-old. More options are in the Nha Trang attractions guide.
The long ones: Da Lat, the dunes, Ninh Van Bay
You can technically go further: up to Da Lat in the hills, south to the white dunes at Bau Trang, or across to the luxury bay at Ninh Van. In practice each runs into either the road or the gate.
Da Lat in a day, and why not to
Doc Let to Da Lat is 180 km over the Hòn Giao pass: four hours by car, five on a tour bus. Leave at 05:00, return at 23:00, and you get six or seven hours in the city: a waterfall, the flower park, a coffee with a view. Skimmed.
A group tour costs 1,500,000–2,000,000 VND (~$60–80) per person. For nine hours in a vehicle that buys tiredness rather than memories. Da Lat is worth two or three days with a bed in it, and what to do there is in our Da Lat guide.
Bau Trang dunes
The white dunes of Bàu Trắng are in Binh Thuan province, 90 km south of Nha Trang, so nearly 140 km from Doc Let. That is eleven or twelve hours of driving for a day trip, at 1,200,000–1,600,000 VND (~$48–64). Worth it if desert landscapes are your reason for travelling; otherwise fold them into a route towards Mui Ne rather than a day out.
Ninh Van Bay
Vịnh Ninh Vân is a closed bay 60 km northeast of Nha Trang with five luxury resorts on it: Six Senses, L'Alyana, An Lam. Getting in as a day visitor is close to impossible, because the boats are for guests, the jetties are gated and there is no public access. Short of booking lunch at Six Senses (from 2,500,000 VND a head) and arranging your own transfer, it is not a day trip.
Worth knowing it exists, mainly so you do not confuse it with Doc Let. Ninh Van is villas on rocks. Doc Let is a village with a beach.
What a day actually costs
The whole point of planning from Doc Let is seeing the real number. A brochure price of 990,000 VND per person does not include the 1,200,000 VND of taxi that makes it possible. From Doc Let, every excursion costs 60 to 80% more than the same excursion bought in Nha Trang.

Five days at Doc Let, three budgets
Lean, about 10,000,000 VND (~$400) for two. One beach day; Ba Ho by scooter (320,000 VND); a day in Nha Trang by taxi (3,000,000 VND); two more days on the sand with dinners in Ninh Hoa.
Middle, about 18,000,000 VND (~$720). The island tour (2,500,000 VND); VinWonders (3,300,000 VND); a cultural day with a private car (3,000,000 VND); Ba Ho plus dinner (500,000 VND); one beach day.

Where to save, and where not to
Book through Klook or GetYourGuide rather than at reception, which is 15 to 30% less for the same seat. Stack activities into one trip, since a car for the day beats two taxis. Do the self-guided things self-guided: Ba Ho, Mui Du and the salt flats need no operator. And eat at Cho Dam market, where the same seafood costs half what the seafront charges.
An English-speaking guide on the boat tour is worth the difference, because it decides whether you know what is happening. Rent snorkelling gear from a dive shop (50,000 VND a day) rather than using the leaky set from the boat. Keep your travel insurance current, since wet granite at Ba Ho turns ankles. And do not ride without the right licence: Khanh Hoa traffic police fine foreigners routinely.
Season by season
Seasonality matters more for excursions than for the beach. You can sunbathe at Doc Let almost year-round; the shallow water rarely gets rough. But boat tours depend on swell, Ba Ho on rain, and the cultural circuit on heat.

When it rains
If it is pouring at Doc Let, the beach is done for the day. The mud baths are indoors and the water is warm. VinWonders keeps its aquarium, shows and 4D cinema running while the open slides close. Cho Dam market is covered, and Po Nagar looks better in the rain than in the glare. Or sit out the downpour with coffee on Trần Phú.
Guided or on your own
Some of these are easier alone, some are not worth attempting without a guide. The rule: the more negotiation and language involved, the more a guide earns their fee. The simpler the logistics, the less you need one.

Take a guide for a medical problem on a boat or a twisted ankle at Ba Ho, for arguing with a driver or a vendor, for a day with three stops plus children plus grandparents, and for a first trip to Vietnam, where the guide's real product is the absence of stress.
Skip the guide for Ba Ho by scooter, where Google Maps is a better guide than a person; for the cultural circuit, which is Grab plus Maps plus picture menus; for the mud baths, where the tills speak English and the tariff is on the wall; and for a Klook boat tour, where an English guide and a card payment are already simpler than cash and a translator.
There are no guides based at Doc Let. Book through a Nha Trang operator, or through Klook, GetYourGuide and Viator, which all take international cards. A private guide runs $50–80 a day, negotiable from four people up.
Seven mistakes
Most of them come from expecting a resort town rather than a village with a beach. Treat a day out as a trip to the city from a house in the country, and the planning falls into place.
Booking at reception without checking. Reception is a middleman, not an operator, and adds 15 to 30%. The same tour on Klook, or at the operator's office in Nha Trang, is cheaper. If you do book through the hotel, ask to see the operator's price rather than the final one.
VinWonders in the rain. The park opens year-round but shuts its outdoor slides when it rains. In September to November you can arrive to find the aquarium and the 4D cinema running and nothing else. No refunds.
Snorkelling at Hon Mun in winter. December to February the sea is rough and boats often stop at Hon Tam instead. Nobody refunds the tour. If the underwater is the point, do not book in those months.
Assuming Da Lat is nearby. A hundred and eighty kilometres of mountain road is four hours each way. Nine hours of driving for six hours in the city. Spend the money on two nights there instead.
Travelling without cash. Tips, the Hon Tam landing fee, water on the boat, a VinWonders locker, parking at Ba Ho: all cash. There is no ATM at Doc Let; the nearest is in Ninh Hoa. Carry at least 500,000 VND per excursion.
Not asking about pick-up. Half the cheap tours sold to Doc Let guests are Nha Trang tours without transport. When you hear 700,000 VND, ask literally: "Is pick-up from Doc Let included?" If not, add 1,200,000 VND.
Two big days back to back. By day three, people who have done two 07:00-to-21:00 excursions cannot face the beach. Alternate. One active day in three is about right.
FAQ: day trips from Doc Let
Almost none. There are no operators on the beach; the four resorts (GM Doc Let, White Sand, Paradise, TTC) act as middlemen, booking Nha Trang tours and calling taxis. On your own from Doc Let you can reach Ba Ho waterfall (22 km, scooter), the Hon Khoi salt fields (7 km) and the Mui Du headland, which is a walk from Paradise Resort. Everything else starts in Nha Trang, 50 km south.

Yes, but not in winter and not for the snorkelling. December to February storms regularly cancel the Hon Mun leg and nobody refunds the fare. From March to October the tour runs reliably, but the Hon Mun coral has recovered poorly since the 2024 bleaching and parts of the reserve stay closed, so the underwater is average. Book it for the boat day, the lunch at sea and the beach on Hon Tam.
Ba Ho (Suối Ba Hồ), 22 km south on QL1 then 3 km of dirt track. Entry is 60,000 VND (~$2.40) and the easiest way there is a rented scooter, 30 to 40 minutes. From September to December it runs full; the rest of the year it is a trickle or dry stone pools. Wear shoes with grip, because the climb is over wet granite.
From 120,000 to 600,000 VND (~$5–24) depending on the centre and the tier. Thap Ba is the oldest and cheapest, from 120,000 VND for the communal pool. I-Resort is the polished one at 250,000 VND for an adult. 100 Egg charges 350,000 VND for its egg-shaped tubs, and Galina in central Nha Trang 280,000 VND. From Doc Let it is only worth combining with something else, since the transfer alone is 1,200,000 VND.
Technically yes, practically no. It is 180 km over a mountain pass, four hours each way. A one-day tour means nine hours of driving for six hours in the city, at 1,500,000–2,000,000 VND (~$60–80) per person. Da Lat deserves two or three days with an overnight in it.
The Nha Trang mud baths are indoors and the spring water is warm. VinWonders keeps its aquarium, shows and 4D cinema running while the open slides close. Cho Dam market is covered, and the Po Nagar towers look better in the rain than in the glare. Failing all that, sit out the downpour with coffee on the Tran Phu seafront.
What we would actually book
Five to seven days at Doc Let works out at two excursion days and three to five beach days. Alternate them, or the road will wear you out faster than the trips.
- The four-island boat tour, March to October: four islands, the floating bar and the beach at Hon Tam in one day. From 2,100,000 VND (~$84) for two with transfers.
- Ba Ho by scooter, September to November, at 320,000 VND (~$13) for two including the rental, and half a day in the jungle with water actually in the falls.
- A day in Nha Trang with a private car: Po Nagar, the Thap Ba mud bath, lunch at the market, the beach and the Buddha. 2,700,000 VND (~$108) for two, and the fullest day on this list.
What not to book from Doc Let: one-day trips to Da Lat, Bau Trang or Ninh Van Bay. The first two are all road, and the third is closed to day visitors.
Doc Let is about quiet and sand, not a packed excursion programme. Treat the trips as a supplement rather than the point of the holiday.
