Hanoi to Sapa: how to get there in 2026
Sapa is about 320 km from Hanoi by road, and it has no airport. That leaves two real choices: the overnight train to Lao Cai station plus a 38 km transfer up the mountain, or a bus that runs the expressway straight into town. The bus is faster and cheaper, 5.5–6.5 hours from 400,000 VND (~$15). The train is calmer, but door to door it takes more than 8 hours.

Since 10 October 2026 the Hanoi — Lao Cai line runs three train pairs a day instead of two. Train numbers SP1/SP2, still quoted by many guides, are not on the current timetable. Below: the timetable as published by Vietnamese state media, operators that have their own working website, and prices with the date we checked them. For trekking, villages and where to stay, see our Sapa travel guide.
Hanoi to Sapa: all options compared
You get from Hanoi to Sapa by sleeper bus or limousine (5.5–6.5 hours, no changes), by overnight train to Lao Cai plus a transfer (8.5–9 hours in total), by private car (about 5 hours) or on a tour. There are no flights; the nearest airport is Noi Bai outside Hanoi.

Prices from operator websites, VNR figures reported in the press, and Seat61, checked 24 Oct 2026.
By road it's about 320 km (operator G8's figure). The railway is shorter at 296 km, but it ends at Lao Cai on the Chinese border, and Sapa is another 35–38 km uphill.

Since 1 July 2025 Sapa has been a ward (phường Sa Pa) of Lao Cai province. The province itself was merged with Yen Bai, and its capital is now the former city of Yen Bai, not Lao Cai (Báo Lào Cai). For travellers nothing changes: the train still runs to Lao Cai station, and operator sites still show old addresses like "thị xã Sapa".
Hanoi to Lao Cai night train

The night train toward Sapa leaves Hanoi Station (Ga Hà Nội) at 21:45, 22:00 or 22:40 and reaches Lao Cai between 5:20 and 6:27. A berth in a four-berth soft sleeper costs from 475,000 VND (~$18). It doesn't go to Sapa itself; the last 38 km are by bus or car.

SP15/SP16 is the new pair, running from 10 October. SP3/SP4 and SP7/SP8 broadly kept their slots, with some times along the way adjusted, according to Báo Lào Cai and VietnamPlus. Passengers can now board at only eight stations, plus Phu Tho for SP8 alone. Some private-carriage sites still show old times: Laman Express, for example, has SP3 arriving at 05:55 and SP4 leaving at 21:30. SP8 is the one train that runs the Red River valley in daylight.
If a blog or agent tells you "SP1 at 21:35", the source is out of date: even Seat61 still showed it in June 2026. Go by the number and time on your ticket.
Fares and classes
A berth in an air-conditioned four-berth soft sleeper on Vietnam Railways (VNR) trains SP15, SP3 and SP7 costs from 475,000 VND (~$18), according to VNR figures for October 2026 (VTV). Lower berths cost more than upper ones, and fares vary by date. Children under 6 travel free sharing an adult's berth (up to two per adult), ages 6–10 get 25% off (Thời báo Tài chính). Check dsvn.vn for the exact fare; tickets are sold there and at the station. Seat61 also lists 12Go.Asia and Baolau, which sell the private carriages too. Weekday berths are often still available a day ahead; weekends and Tet go much sooner.
Private carriages

Private companies attach their own carriages to the same SP trains. The cabins are the same as VNR's (since 2015 the operators lease the railway's own cars); what you pay extra for is their own attendant, bedding and free water. They run in the same train on the same timetable, so you won't arrive any sooner. Seat61 puts a berth at $35–40 in a four-berth cabin and $65–80 per person in a two-berth.
We only name brands with a working website of their own that lists Hanoi — Lao Cai (checked 24 Oct 2026):
- Laman Express: carriages on SP3/SP4; Deluxe four-berth, VIP and Premium two-berth cabins.
- Livitrans Express: departures at 22:00 and 22:40; Deluxe $40, VIP $80 per ticket.
- Family Express Train: carriages on the night SP7 and day SP8.
- Damitrans: lists Hanoi — Lao Cai, no prices online.
Some brands from older guides (Chapa Express, Sapaly, Fanxipan Express, Victoria Express) are left out: Chapa Express's site is "under maintenance", Victoria Express says it is "re-opening soon", and the others wouldn't load. That doesn't mean their carriages are gone, only that we couldn't verify them directly.
Lao Cai to Sapa: the last 38 km

From Lao Cai station (Ga Lào Cai) to Sapa is about 38 km and roughly 50 minutes of mountain road. The public bus costs about 50,000 VND (~$2), a seat in a shared minibus 40,000–100,000 VND (~$1.50–4), a whole car about $30. All prices per Seat61, June 2026.
The road up is a toll road, the Lao Cai — Sapa BOT link. In late June 2025 a landslide by the toll plaza at Km12+600 cut it off. The plaza has been repaired and tolls resumed on 31 January 2026 (Báo Lào Cai). On 4 August 2026 a new slide hit the same spot; by 14:00 it had reopened one way, Sapa to Lao Cai only, with other traffic sent along the old QL4D (Báo Lào Cai).

Hanoi to Sapa by bus and limousine

Buses and limousines run from Hanoi to Sapa with no changes in 5.5–6.5 hours on the Noi Bai — Lao Cai expressway (CT.05). Vietnamese operators start at 400,000 VND (~$15); Sapa Express, which picks up in the Old Quarter, charges $16–25. Drop-off is in central Sapa.
| Operator | Hanoi pickup | Time (per website) | Price (24 Oct 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|

The 22:00 Sapa Express night bus arrives in Sapa at 4:00. It saves you a hotel night, but almost nowhere will let you check in at 4 am, so expect a couple of hours in a lobby or café. Unless you've booked early check-in, take the 07:00 or 14:30 day bus.
DTiNews, the English edition of Dân trí, summed up the choice in May 2026:
Those focused on convenience, shorter travel times and lower costs will likely find sleeper buses difficult to beatDTiNews, 13 May 2026
The same piece lists the bus downsides honestly: berths are cramped for tall people, the mountain stretch can make you carsick, and most buses rely on rest stops rather than an onboard toilet.
The CT.05 opened in 2014. The roughly 121 km Yen Bai — Lao Cai section is being widened from two lanes to four, with completion targeted for late 2026 (Báo Lào Cai, 9 June 2026). The province says the works barely affect traffic, but operators quote times without roadworks or jams, so an hour of slack doesn't hurt.
Private car with driver
A private car takes you from Hanoi to Sapa in about 5 hours. Sapa Express rents vehicles for 4–28 people from $110 per car (sapaexpress.com). Split four ways that's under $30 each, close to a bus cabin, with stops wherever you like.
It suits families with kids, groups with luggage, and anyone coming straight from the airport. Get the price and what it covers (tolls, waiting, stops) in writing before you leave. A regular metered city taxi is a poor idea for a trip this long, since you can't fix the price upfront. More on apps and taxis in our Grab and taxi guide.
Is there an airport in Sapa?
No. In 2026 you cannot fly to Sapa. The nearest working airport is Noi Bai (HAN) outside Hanoi, more than 300 km away by road.
A Sapa airport project does exist. It's planned for the former Cam Cọn commune in former Bảo Yên district, on 371 ha, with 1.5 million passengers a year in phase one, to be built as a public-private partnership. In June 2025 the province approved a revised project and planned to start looking for an investor from Q3 2025 (Báo Lào Cai). In June 2026 Sapa was on the list of seven new airports the national plan expects to open "before 2030" (Báo Lào Cai). As of October 2026 we found no report that construction has started.
Even once it's built, there will still be a mountain drive from Cam Cọn to Sapa. For now, plan around Noi Bai.
Noi Bai Airport to Sapa directly

You can go from Noi Bai to Sapa without entering Hanoi, because the CT.05 starts right by the airport. There are three ways to do it: a bus to Lao Cai from an operator office near the airport, a private car, or a ride into Hanoi for an evening train or night bus.
- Noi Bai — Lao Cai bus. Sao Việt has an office at the Noi Bai crossroads (Ngã tư Nội Bài) and runs to Lao Cai from 330,000 VND (~$13) for a cabin and 250,000 VND (~$10) for a standard berth, about 5 hours (xesaoviet.com.vn). It's a junction near the airport, not a terminal, so you'll need to get there from arrivals. From Lao Cai it's another 50 minutes to Sapa.
- Private car. The easiest option after a long flight, about 5 hours on the road. Sapa Express's car from Hanoi starts at $110; agree an airport pickup and its price in advance.
- Via Hanoi. If you land in the daytime, head to the station or an operator's office and leave on an evening train or night bus. Getting from the airport into the city is covered in Getting around Hanoi.
We didn't find a scheduled "Noi Bai terminal — Sapa" service on any operator's site. If an agent sells one, ask exactly where the pickup is.

Sapa back to Hanoi

The way back mirrors the way up. Night trains leave Lao Cai at 21:25 (SP16) and 21:50 (SP4), and the day train SP8 at 12:05. Sapa Express buses leave Sapa at 07:30, 14:00, 14:30, 15:00 and 22:00; check G8 and Sao Việt timetables on their sites.
Take SP8 at least one way. It runs by day along the Red River and gets into Hanoi at 19:30, in time for dinner.
Onward from Sapa: Ha Giang, Bac Ha, Ninh Binh
Direct limousines link Sapa and Ha Giang. G8's Ha Giang — Sapa service starts at 430,000 VND (~$17) and takes about 6 hours for 235 km (g8opentour.vn). If you're riding the loop, start with our Ha Giang Loop guide. Since the 2025 reform Ha Giang is part of Tuyen Quang province.
G8 also runs Ninh Binh — Sapa from 600,000 VND (~$23), about 6 h 20 min. Handy if Ninh Binh comes before Sapa and you don't want to backtrack through Hanoi.

People go to Bac Ha (Bắc Hà) for the market. The main market runs on Sundays from early morning to 14:00 (VnExpress). The buffalo market moved to Saturdays from 19 July 2025 (Báo Lào Cai). The road goes via Lao Cai. We found no scheduled Sapa — Bac Ha bus with a published fare on operator sites, so most people go on a day tour or by private car.
Which option to choose
The short version: day bus up, SP8 day train back (or night SP16/SP4). You see the mountains from the road one way and spend only one night in transit. For a full week, there's a ready plan in our 7-day northern Vietnam itinerary.
Season, fog and landslides

The road to Sapa is open year-round, but two things can wreck a schedule: fog on the climb, typically from early afternoon to morning, and landslides in the rainy season. In summer and early autumn leave at least half a day of slack, and check forecasts on the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting site, nchmf.gov.vn.
Fog. On national road QL4D through Sapa, fog sits from about 13:00 to 9:00 the next day, reports Báo Lào Cai (20 Feb 2026); drivers quoted in the piece say it's thickest early in the morning. Lao Cai traffic police advise drivers:
Tài xế khi lưu thông trên tuyến cần giảm tốc độ, giữ khoảng cách an toàn, chú ý quan sát phương tiện phía trước (Drivers on this road should slow down, keep a safe distance and watch the vehicles ahead)Lao Cai provincial traffic police, Báo Lào Cai, 20 Feb 2026
If you hire a car, don't rush your driver.
Landslides. On the night of 30 June to 1 July 2025 a landslide blocked the Lao Cai — Sapa road at the toll plaza. In September 2024, after storm No. 3 (Typhoon Yagi), Hanoi — Lao Cai passenger trains stopped until the line was repaired; service resumed on 23 September (Báo Lào Cai). On days like that operators delay or cancel services.
Holidays. Over Tet and long weekends trains and buses sell out early, so book as soon as your dates are fixed. For what to pack and month-by-month weather, see the Sapa travel guide and Hanoi weather.
Common mistakes
- Buying a train ticket "to Sapa". Trains stop at Lao Cai; add a 50-minute transfer.
- Trusting an old timetable. SP1/SP2 from older guides aren't on the 10 Oct 2026 timetable. Check on dsvn.vn or your ticket.
- Night bus without early check-in. A 4:00 arrival means hours waiting for a room.
- Travelling back on the day of your flight. Fog and landslides eat time, and trains and buses reach Hanoi at night or at dawn.
- Buying from a random middleman. Book on the operator's official site or a major platform, and confirm the pickup address.
FAQ
By bus or limousine, 5.5–6.5 hours with no changes, according to the operators. The night train takes 7 h 35 min to 7 h 50 min to Lao Cai, plus about 50 minutes by bus or car up to Sapa. A private car takes about 5 hours. In fog, during roadworks or over holidays, add an hour or two
The bus is faster, cheaper and drops you in central Sapa. The train is calmer: you can get up and walk around, and you sleep more evenly than on mountain bends. If you get carsick or you are tall, take the train. If time and money matter most, a day bus. A good compromise is bus up and the SP8 day train back
As of October 2026, per person:
- Sleeper bus, Sao Việtfrom 400,000 VND~$15
- Sleeper bus, G8from 450,000 VND~$17
- Bus, Sapa Express$16–25
- VNR train berthfrom 475,000 VND~$18
- Bus from Lao Cai to Sapa~50,000 VND~$2
- Private carriage$35–80
- Private carfrom $110per vehicle
Technically yes, but it makes little sense: 11–13 hours on the road for a few hours in town. Most people give Sapa at least two nights. If you only have one day, pick somewhere closer to Hanoi and save Sapa for a separate trip
Our Hanoi guide has the options
With small children, the train or a private car works best. On the train, under-6s ride free on an adult’s berth and ages 6–10 get 25% off, and you can book a whole cabin. A car stops when you need it and takes you to your hotel. On a sleeper bus kids often get carsick on the final mountain stretch, and there is usually no toilet on board
Pick a lower berth toward the front, where the bends usually throw you around less. Also bring:
- A sweater or light blanket: the air-conditioning on buses and trains runs cold
- Motion-sickness tablets: take them before the climb from Lao Cai, not halfway up
- Your own water and snacks: stops are few
Even in summer, Sapa evenings are cool
