Nha Trang MarriottResort & Spa, Hon Tre Island — a full review

It is also a Vinpearl resort that changed its sign in 2023. That single fact explains most of the gap between what the brand promises and what guests report, so it is where this review starts.

The resort at a glance

For scale: the neighbouring Vinpearl Resort Nha Trang has 476 rooms, and Amiana on the mainland has 248. This place is a small town with a lobby.

Who actually runs this resort

The buildings were not designed for Marriott. Villas and towers went up around 2016 under the Vinpearl Sealink and Vinpearl Golflink names, and the international flag only appeared on 29 September 2023. Vinpearl, part of Vingroup, still owns the asset. Marriott manages it.

That matters before you book rather than after. Most of the disappointment in the review pile traces back to the same place: guests pay for a brand and get a Vietnamese resort that recently changed clothes.

What survived the handover:

• Face recognition instead of a key card. You are photographed at check-in, and from then on the boat, the restaurants and the bars all read your face. Pure Vingroup engineering, and Marriott left it running.
• The theme park next door. VinWonders is another Vingroup asset, which is exactly why guests get a free pass.
• Service culture. Staff are warm and willing; brand standards are still settling in.

What never arrived: an Executive Lounge. Since March 2025, elite members pick one welcome benefit at check-in — breakfast for two, a drinks set, a gift item, or 1,000 points. There is no lounge to retreat to at 6pm.

Set expectations accordingly. Come for the grounds, the beach and the park, and the resort delivers comfortably. Come for chain-standard service and Bonvoy recognition, and drop your expectations one notch.

Getting there: ferry, cable car and the 90-minute rule

The resort sits on the north shore of Hon Tre, the island facing Nha Trang that the famous cable car crosses to. From Cam Ranh airport (CXR) to the mainland pier is roughly 40 minutes by road, then a crossing by speedboat or cable car. Both crossings are included for guests.

Here is the detail no booking page mentions: the cable car does not land at the hotel. It comes down on the south-eastern tip of the island by the VinWonders entrance, while the resort is on the north shore — a buggy ride away. The speedboat goes straight to the resort pier. Arrive by boat with your luggage, and save the cable car for the day you visit the park.

Aggregator listings understate all of this. Several booking pages still print a flat "8 km from the airport, 25 minutes", which is not a real number for anyone arriving with bags. Budget about 90 minutes from wheels-down to your room key.

One more thing to accept before booking: the island is a closed loop. A spontaneous dinner in town means a boat, then a taxi along the promenade, then the same in reverse. Room or pool villa

The real decision at booking is not the view, it is the format: one of 403 rooms in the main building, or one of 426 pool villas scattered across the grounds. They are two different holidays on one property.

Rooms in the main building

Categories run Deluxe with a garden view, Deluxe Ocean View, and Executive Suite with an enlarged living area. Every category gets a balcony. Marriott does not publish room square footage for this property, and inventing a number would be worse than admitting that — email the resort if the figure matters to you.

The main building suits a couple on a five-to-seven-night stay and anyone who wants the lobby, the restaurants and the big pool within walking distance. You will barely need a buggy.

Pool villas

Each villa has its own plunge pool and outdoor deck. The layout logic repeats across categories: bedrooms open off a shared living room, so two families or parents with grown children share a roof without sharing a wall.

How to do the maths

Price per person per night, not per unit. A three-bedroom villa for six at roughly $350 works out near $58 a head — cheaper than three Deluxe rooms. The trade-off is distance: villas sprawl, and without a buggy it is a ten-minute walk to breakfast.

Three questions worth emailing before you pay:

1. How far is this specific villa from the main building and the beach?
2. Do buggies run at night, and how do you call one?
3. Is breakfast in your rate? Villa rates do not always include it.

Grounds, beach and spa

Bãi Trũbeach runs about two kilometres: white sand, a gentle entry, and water that stays calm because the north side of the island is sheltered. On the grounds there are seven pools including a children's pool and one with a slide, the QUAN Spa with 12 treatment rooms plus sauna and steam, two tennis courts, a pickleball court and a gym.

Hours worth knowing:

• Pools — 06:00–19:00.
• QUAN Spa — 09:00–22:00.
• Kids Club — 08:00–21:00, with an outdoor playground and a kids' pool alongside.

The Kids Club runs a programme rather than a holding pen: craft workshops, painting, cooking sessions. That buys parents a couple of quiet hours by the pool, and it is the single thing reviews praise most consistently.

Now the honest part about the water. Jellyfish and plankton drift in seasonally — a bay-wide phenomenon, not a fault of this resort. If clear water is non-negotiable, plan around the season using our guide to Nha Trang's beaches rather than a booking-page photo.

The second recurring complaint is loungers. At peak hours there are not enough, and the usual resort economy applies: towels claim seats from eight in the morning. Poolside cabanas exist, but there are few of them.

Eating on a closed island

Seven food and drink outlets operate on the property, and the source count disagrees with itself — Marriott's own press release says four restaurants and bars, the property page says five. A list is more useful than a number:

Breakfast is served at Sands. Private dining is bookable too: hotpot or barbecue in your villa, a table set on the sand.

The structural point about food here is simple. You cannot walk out for lunch. There is no 40,000 VND noodle stall down the lane, so every receipt is a resort receipt, and half-board starts looking sensible rather than lazy. Tour operators sell breakfast-only, half-board and all-inclusive packages for this property.

The VinWonders pass, priced out

Guests receive a complimentary two-day pass to VinWonders Nha Trang plus a buggy to the zoo's back gate. The park covers 50 hectares on the same island: water park, rides, an aquarium, a zoo and the evening Tata show.

Here is why the perk deserves its own section. As of August 2026 a VinWonders ticket costs 950,000 VND for an adult and 710,000 VND for a child.

For a family of four the pass covers roughly two nights of the room rate. That changes the comparison against mainland resorts, where the park and the cable car would both be paid extras.

What a 2026 stay actually costs

A room on low dates starts at $112, and the typical metasearch rate sits near $123. A three-bedroom pool villa runs around $350, which is where the per-person maths starts to favour groups.

Included in the rate: the speedboat and cable car, buggies, Wi-Fi, the VinWonders pass, and breakfast if your plan carries it.

Not included: the airport transfer, meals outside your board plan, the spa, alcohol, private dining and cabana hire.

Bonvoy, cash and the island economy

Three practical things separate a smooth stay here from an irritating one, and none of them appear on the booking page.

Bonvoy status buys less than usual. No Executive Lounge exists, so the elite welcome is a choice of one: breakfast for two, a drinks set, a gift item, or 1,000 points. Book through a third-party site and you get neither points nor recognition — for a stay this long, the direct booking usually wins on value even at a slightly higher nightly rate.

Cash is a mainland problem, not an island one. International Visa, Mastercard and Amex work at the resort without drama, and so do the card terminals at Cam Ranh airport. Everything else in Vietnam still runs on cash, and the island has no ATM network worth planning around. Draw your notes near Chợ Đầm or along Tran Phu before you board the boat; withdrawals in Vietnam usually cap at 3–5 million VND (~$115–190) per transaction.

Sort connectivity before you fly. An eSIM bought at home or at CXR arrivals saves the queue; Viettel and Vinaphone hold up best on the island. Grab handles taxis and food on the mainland, Zalohandles messaging with local staff, and the resort's face-recognition gates mean you will use your phone less than you expect.

Visa by passport, in one table

The honest cons

Ratings pull apart in a telling way: 4.0 out of 5 on TripAdvisor across 2,483 reviews, 8.5 out of 10 on Booking across 686. The gap is a baseline problem — a package-holiday buyer and a Marriott regular are grading different things.

What guests complain about most:

• The buggy queue. Nobody manages it. Guests cut in, staff do not intervene, and on grounds this size it grates faster than anything else.
• Music volume. A July 2026 TripAdvisor guest praised the beach and the nature, then singled out the pool and beach sound levels.
• Loungers. Short supply at peak hours.
• Drainage smell in some rooms. Isolated but recurring on Booking.
• Cockroaches. Tropics, large grounds, and a review pattern rather than a one-off.
• Jellyfish and plankton. Seasonal, bay-wide.
• No Executive Lounge. A genuine downgrade for high-tier Bonvoy members.
• Ferry dependency. Every spontaneous evening becomes a logistics exercise.

None of these ruin a holiday. They do ruin holidays for people who arrive expecting something else, which is the entire reason for listing them.

Alternatives worth comparing

The Marriott wins when you travel as a family or a group, want the theme park, and do not mind island life. The VinWonders perk and villa capacity give it the best per-person figure on Hon Tre.
