Weather by region

South (Ho Chi Minh City, Phu Quoc, Mui Ne, Phan Thiet, Vung Tau, Con Dao) — the hottest month. Days hit 31–37 °C and nights never drop below 24 °C. Ho Chi Minh City is the record-holder at 34–37 °C, so air conditioning in your room is non-negotiable. Rain is still light (20–60 mm), but toward the end of April the first pre-monsoon storms arrive — short evening downpours of 15–20 minutes.

Centre (Nha Trang, Da Nang, Hoi An, Hue) — the best time for the beach. In Nha Trang it's 30–33 °C with the sea at 26–28 °C and just 3–5 rainy days all month. Da Nang has warmed to 29–31 °C — finally comfortable for swimming.

North (Hanoi, Ha Long, Ninh Binh) — proper spring. Days 25–29 °C, nights 20–23 °C. Humidity of 80–90% makes it feel muggier than the thermometer says. Hanoi in April is great for wandering the Old Quarter, but for a Ha Long cruise pick a day with no rain in the forecast.

Highlands (Da Lat, Sapa) — a pleasant cool escape from the heat on the plains. Da Lat is 23–26 °C by day and 16–19 °C at night, so you'll want a jacket. Sapa is 19–24 °C, and the rice terraces are being flooded before planting — one of the most photogenic periods of the year.

Early vs late April — does it matter?

In the south, yes. Early April is classic dry season: 31–33 °C, not a cloud, a sea breeze. By the end of the month the heat climbs to 35–37 °C and the first storms appear.

An important catch: 30 April is Reunification Day, and with 1 May (Labour Day) it makes a long weekend. Vietnamese travellers head to the coast en masse. Hotel prices jump 20–40%, transport fills up. If you're travelling on those dates, book 2–3 months ahead.

📌
Paying in Vietnam: Visa and Mastercard work at hotels and larger restaurants, but street stalls, markets and small cafés are cash only. Withdraw VND from an ATM (avoid the airport rate) and carry small notes.

What to pack for April

April is a hot month, so pack light. For the south and centre, travel almost bare-bones. For the north and highlands, add a couple of layers.

Clothing

  • Shorts, T-shirts, light dresses — the base
  • A long-sleeve shirt — for sun protection and for visiting temples
  • A sweater or windbreaker — for Hanoi, Da Lat and over-air-conditioned interiors
  • Two swimsuits minimum (at 80% humidity they dry slowly)

Protection

  • Sunscreen SPF 50+ — the UV index is 9–11, you can burn in 20 minutes
  • Mosquito repellent — more relevant than in winter as humidity rises
  • A hat and sunglasses

Documents and money

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months
  • Your e-visa approval printout (many border officers still ask for it) — apply at evisa.gov.vn
  • USD cash to exchange — the rate is usually better than for other currencies
  • A Visa or Mastercard for ATMs and hotels; keep cash for street food and markets

Don't overpack — clothes are cheap in Vietnam, and laundry services are everywhere (from about 30,000 VND / ~$1.20 per kg).

⚠️
Visa rules vary by nationality and change often. Check the official portal evisa.gov.vn for your passport before you book. Information current as of March 2026.

Fruit season in April

April kicks off the main fruit season. Mango peaks, rambutan and lychee appear, and durian starts. Prices are 2–3 times lower than in winter.

Buy at local markets — tourist stalls mark up 2–3 times. Good markets: Chợ Đầm (Nha Trang), Chợ Bến Thành (Ho Chi Minh City), Chợ Hàn (Da Nang). A tip: durian is banned in many hotels and on planes because of the smell — eat it at the market.

Common mistakes on an April trip

Underestimating the southern heat. Ho Chi Minh City at 34–37 °C isn't a "warm April" — it's a furnace. Walking the streets from noon to 4 pm is a slog. Plan sightseeing for the morning and hit the pool or the A/C in the afternoon.

Travelling the long weekend without a booking. 30 April plus 1 May — the entire country heads to the sea. Hotels in Phu Quoc and Nha Trang fill up. A week out, nothing decent is left.

Skipping the SPF. The UV index in April is 9–11. Even people who "never burn" do. SPF 50+, a hat and a rash guard for snorkelling are essentials.

Changing money at the airport. The airport rate is 5–10% worse than in town. Bring USD or simply withdraw VND from a city ATM.

Not drinking enough water. In the heat, dehydration is real. A 1.5-litre bottle costs 10,000 VND (~$0.40). Buy it at shops, not from beach vendors (triple markup). Stick to bottled water — the tap water isn't drinkable.
