Sunshine runs 8–9 hours a day on the central coast, 6–7 in the south (cloud builds), and 5–6 in the north. The UV index is 9–11 nationwide — you can burn in 15–20 minutes.
Weather by region
The south (Ho Chi Minh City, Phu Quoc, Mui Ne, Phan Thiet, Vung Tau, Con Dao) — the monsoon begins. Daytime 31–37 C, nights no cooler than 25 C. Rain is no longer rare: 12–18 days a month. But don't panic — a tropical downpour lasts 30–60 minutes, usually in the afternoon, and mornings are almost always sunny. Mui Ne and Phan Thiet are the exception: still dry here (40–60 mm), with steady wind that kitesurfers love.
The centre (Nha Trang, Da Nang, Hoi An, Hue) — the best region for a May beach holiday. Nha Trang runs 31–34 C with sea at 27–29 C and minimal rain. Da Nang warms to 30–34 C, and My Khe beach is in perfect shape. There are noticeably fewer tourists than in the winter high season, so accommodation is 15–25% cheaper.
The north (Hanoi, Ha Long, Ninh Binh) — full tropical summer. Hanoi hits 30–36 C at 80–90% humidity; the mugginess feels worse than the thermometer suggests. A Ha Long cruise is doable, but expect cloud and the occasional stormy day.
The highlands (Da Lat, Sapa) — an escape from the lowland heat. Da Lat: 22–27 C, dropping to 16–19 C at night, so bring a layer. Rain most days, but brief. Sapa: 20–25 C, with the rice terraces flooded before planting — spectacular for photos.
Early vs late May — is there a difference?
In the south the difference is clear. Early May is still relatively dry: one or two showers a week. By month's end the rains build — daily downpours, humidity at 85–90%.
In the north it's the opposite: early May is still bearable (30–32 C), but by late May the heat peaks (34–36 C) with more rain on top.
The centre stays steady all month: 30–34 C, warm sea, minimal rain.
Worth knowing: 1 May is a public holiday (part of the 30 April – 1 May long weekend). If you arrive over that stretch, book accommodation well ahead — prices run 20–30% above normal in the first week of May.
💬 "May is the sweet spot for the central coast: fewer crowds, warm sea, and the rains haven't arrived yet." — Lonely Planet, 2025
Can you swim in Vietnam in May?

Swimming in May is excellent almost everywhere. The water is at its yearly peak: 27–29 C across the south and centre. Even the north is comfortable now — 25–27 C in Ha Long. The one caveat is the start of monsoon swell in the south: Phu Quoc and Con Dao can be choppy on some days.
| Resort | Sea temp | Waves | Swimming |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nha Trang | 27–29 C | Calm | Excellent |
| Da Nang | 27–29 C | Light | Excellent |
| Hoi An | 27–29 C | Light | Excellent |
| Mui Ne | 27–29 C | Moderate (kitesurfing!) | Good |
| Phu Quoc | 28–29 C | Light–moderate | Good (storms possible) |
| Vung Tau | 28–29 C | Light | Good |
| Ha Long | 25–27 C | Light | Comfortable |
For families with kids, Nha Trang and Da Nang are the best pick: gentle entry, warm water, calm sea. Mui Ne is for kitesurfers, not toddlers.
Skip the airport queue in 5–10 min

What to pack for May
May is hot and humid, so pack light. For the centre, travel light. For the south, add a rain layer. For the north and highlands, bring a couple of layers plus an umbrella.
Clothing
- Shorts, T-shirts, light dresses — the core
- A long-sleeved shirt — for sun protection and temples
- A sweater or windbreaker — for Da Lat, air-conditioned buses and flights
- Swimwear — at least two sets (at 85% humidity it dries slowly)
- Comfortable sandals plus trainers for excursions
Sun and rain protection
- SPF 50+ sunscreen — the UV index is 9–11, sunburn in 15 minutes is real
- A compact umbrella or rain poncho — essential for the south and north
- Mosquito repellent — the wet season brings mosquitoes out
- A hat and sunglasses
Documents and money
- Passport valid for at least 6 months
- Cash US dollars to exchange — the rate is better than for most other currencies
- A Visa or Mastercard is widely accepted in cities; carry cash for markets and small towns
- Sort your visa in advance — most nationalities need an e-visa (see the FAQ below)
Don't overpack — clothing is cheap in Vietnam and laundry services are everywhere (from 30,000 VND / ~$1.20 per kg).

May is peak fruit season. Mango is at its best, mangosteen and rambutan flood the markets, and durian is ramping up. Prices are the lowest of the year.

Common mistakes on a May trip
Booking Phu Quoc without checking the forecast. May kicks off the island's rainy season. The rain isn't daily yet, but it can spoil 3–4 days out of a week. If storms are forecast, consider Nha Trang or Da Nang instead.
Underestimating the humidity. In the south and north it runs 80–90%. At 33 C and 85% humidity it feels like 40 C. Drink at least 2–3 litres of water a day. A 1.5-litre bottle is 10,000 VND (~$0.40).
Planning tours for the afternoon. Rain in the south and north tends to come after midday. Front-load your activities: 6:00 to 11:00 is the golden window.
Skipping a rain poncho. An umbrella won't save you from a tropical downpour — the wind is strong. A poncho for 20,000 VND (~$0.80) is a must-have.
Booking the first week of May with no buffer. The long weekend (30 Apr – 1 May) means packed hotels and prices 20–30% higher. If you can, shift the trip to the second half of May.
